After Ishan Kishan’s game-changing century against the Rajasthan Royals, his childhood coach, Uttam Mazumdar, was thrilled with his performance. He believes this innings could help Ishan play even better in the Indian Premier League and possibly make his way back to the Indian team. Ishan scored a great century on his first game for the Sunrisers Hyderabad, and with a solid half-century from Travis Head, they set a strong total of 286/6 at Uppal Stadium. They nearly beat their own record for the highest team total in IPL history. Rajasthan Royals managed only 242/6, which meant they lost by 44 runs, and Ishan earned the ‘Player of the Match’ award.
Speaking to ANI, Uttam shared how much he loved watching the match with his family and cheering for Ishan. He feels this performance could really help Ishan’s chances for returning to the national team. He mentioned upcoming tournaments like the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup in 2026, emphasizing how memorable Ishan’s record of the fastest double century in ODIs is. Uttam noted that Ishan performed well during the domestic season and also had three fifties in practice matches leading up to this IPL. He believes this century will boost Ishan’s confidence.
Uttam expressed that Ishan’s recent experiences in domestic cricket are beneficial for his career. He praised Ishan for balancing aggression with caution during his innings, which he thinks is a great approach. He is a big-match player. Even when he wasn’t getting chances, he didn’t let that bring him down, he said.
Uttam is also pleased about the healthy competition for the wicketkeeper position in white-ball cricket with names like Sanju Samson, Dhruv Jurel, and Jitesh Sharma alongside seasoned players like Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul. It’s good to see so many talented youngsters coming up. This competition eases things for the team management and selectors. I really hope Ishan gets more chances in the upcoming series, he said.
