Manning was the No. 1 overall prospect in the 2023 recruiting class and has already shown flashes of brilliance in his limited playing time.
With 969 passing yards and nine touchdowns across 12 appearances, he has given Texas fans plenty of reasons to be optimistic. However, there are still areas he needs to refine before stepping fully into the spotlight.
Concerns over ball security
While Manning has been impressive in practice, some insiders have raised concerns about his ability to protect the football. Eric Nahlin of Inside Texas Football recently analyzed Manning’s performance and praised his decision-making but noted that ball security remains a key area of focus.
“Arch is being smart with the football, but going into next year, how well will he protect it? He’s aggressive, he wants to throw it downfield, and he’s doing that a lot,” Nahlin stated. The good news? Manning appears to be making strides in that department. Nahlin observed that he is learning to take safer options and check down when necessary, something that could make a huge difference as he transitions into a starting role.
Sarkisian’s bold strategy for Texas
Unlike many top programs aggressively pursuing talent in the transfer portal, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian is taking a different approach. Despite losing key offensive players to the draft, he has opted to focus on developing in-house talent rather than bringing in transfers. This move signals confidence in players like Manning and his supporting cast, including Ryan Wingo and
DeAndre Moore.
While the Longhorns‘ wide receiver depth has taken a hit, Sarkisian believes the current roster has the potential to step up and deliver. With one of college football’s most promising quarterbacks leading the offense, Texas fans have every reason to be excited for the upcoming season.
