FootyPop: Angel City Hire Alexander Straus As New Head Coach

In this week’s news, Angel City found their new head coach; the Washington Spirit will be without Trinity Rodman for a while; the Kansas City Current set an NWSL record; and more!

    High of the Week

Angel City has finally announced its new head coach Alexander Straus. He will officially take over the head coaching duties on June 1. Straus is currently the head coach of Bayern Munich where he will finish the season. He’s in his third season with Bayern and he is close to securing three straight Bundesliga titles. Straus is from Norway and he has international coaching experience having been the head coach of the U23 and U19 Norwegian Women’s National Teams. Angel City have been looking for a permanent head coach since December when they fired former head coach Becki Tweed. Sam Laity has been acting as the interim head coach while the search was ongoing. Straus is a proven winner at Bayern and he could fit in very well at Angel City.

    Low of the Week

This week it was revealed that Trinity Rodman would be taking some time away from the Washington Spirit to try and address a lingering back issue. She’ll be seeing a team doctor in London to try to figure out how to get her back healthy again. Rodman has missed time with the USWNT and the Spirit because of this ongoing back issue but attempted to return to the field. There is no timetable for Rodman’s return to the field but she will rejoin the Spirit as soon as she’s healthy.

Also this week Manchester City announced that Mary Fowler suffered an ACL tear. Fowler had been having a breakout season, through 17 games she scored six goals and tallied seven assists. It’s a huge blow for both City and Australia as Fowler will be out for an extended period.

    News of the Week

The Northern Super League, a top women’s soccer league in Canada, began their first season over the weekend. The league consists of six teams: Calgary Wild, Halifax Tides, Montreal Roses, Ottawa Rapid, AFC Toronto, and Vancouver Rise. The very first match was Vancouver Rise against Calgary Wild with the Rise coming away with a 1-0 win. Quinn scored the very first goal in league history with a penalty kick in the 22nd minute.

    Team of the Week

The Kansas City Current set a new NWSL record with nine consecutive regular season wins. Kansas City got the record-breaking win thanks to a 2-0 win over the Houston Dash thanks to goals from Lo’eau LaBonta and Kayla Sharples. Their last regular season loss was against the North Carolina Courage on September 1, 2024. The Current are currently in first place in the NWSL standings with their perfect 5-0 start.

    Win of the Week

The Washington Spirit have struggled with injuries to start the season but they knocked off the defending NWSL Champions the Orlando Pride in Florida. They came into the match with 11 players unavailable and had to step up and a lot of formation/position changes but they were able to walk away with three points. Orlando controlled the pace of the game but the Spirit were able to capitalize off of a mistake by goalkeeper Anna Moorhouse. The lone goal was scored by Gift Monday in her first start for Washington.

It was Washington’s first win in Orlando since 2019 and they ended Orlando’s 22-game unbeaten streak at home.

    Goal of the Week

Kiki Pickett only knows how to score bangers it seems and she did it yet again. Long-range rockets are her specialty and this time it was the game-winner for Bay FC in their 1-0 win against the North Carolina Courage. She was able to control a ball from Joelle Anderson and hit a half volley to send the ball zooming into the back of the net.

    Player of the Week

Delphine Cascarino has been good in her first season for the San Diego Wave. She had an incredible game against Racing Louisville with a brace and an assist. Both of her goals came in the second half. The Wave walked away with a big 4-1 win.

    Assist of the Week

Barcelona had a terrific showing in their 4-1 win over Chelsea in the first leg of the UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final match. Their fourth goal was a beautiful piece of soccer from Alexia Putellas and Claudia Pina. Pina started it off with a give-and-go and then Putellas sent in an impressive backheel into the path of Pina who sent it into the back of the net.

Social Media Post of the Week

The WNBA Draft was last week and we got an NWSL/WNBA crossover when Trinity Rodman sent the Washington Mystics sixth pick in the draft, Georgia Amoore, a congratulatory video. Amoore is a massive Rodman fan and I’m sure we’ll be seeing her show up to watch Rodman and the Washington Spirit now that she’s in the same city.
