The NWSL season is underway, and an impressive rookie class is leading the way. Let’s take a look at some of the NWSL rookies who are making waves in the league!
1. Maddie Dahlien
Dahlien is a forward fresh from North Carolina, and she is bringing that Tar Heel energy to Seattle. Her first career goal came during the Cascadia rivalry game against Portland. The sole point was the only goal scored in the match. Early this year, she signed for three years with the Seattle Reign, providing much to anticipate for fans.
2. Maggie Graham
The March NWSL Rookie of the Month, Maggie Graham, has been making some commotion this season. At midfield for the Houston Dash, Graham has scored in each of her professional appearances. The Duke alumnus has already helped Dash secure victories which could foresight her as a critical midline member.
3. Riley Tiernan
April’s Rookie of the Month, Riley Tiernan, is a goal-scoring machine. She already has six points for Angel City, more than any other rookie in the league. Being an exemplary rookie isn’t a new phenomenon for Tiernan, as she was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year while at Rutgers.
4. Lilly Reale
On a three-year contract with Gotham FC, Lilly Reale is a stone wall defender. She has shifted from central to left back for Gotham and thrives in the position. She has one goal under her belt and shines in all defensive capacities in the backline.
5. Hannah Bebar
Bebar has been a standout midfielder her entire career and continues to be with Bay FC. Bebar has had two appearances for Bay and has created buzz since. She’s got a way of moving the ball and reading the pitch.
6. Brooklyn Courtnall
A Hermann Trophy semi-finalist, Brooklyn Courtnall is settling in well with NC Courage. So far, with only one cap for the team, most of her career buzz comes from her time in camps and college. She was Courage’s first collegiate pick since the draft elimination and helped them maintain a clean sheet draw in her first defensive appearance.
7. Trinity Armstrong
Trinity Armstrong is an exciting name for San Diego Wave. Armstrong is only 17-years-old, a North Carolina alumna, and a powerful defender. She has had seven appearances for Wave and, during one, managed to squash Temwa Chawinga’s eight-game hot streak. She also scored a game-winning goal in stoppage time.
8. Karlie Lema
Another exciting young NWSL forward is Karlie Lema. Lema has had five appearances for Bay FC and one goal with a lot more on the way. She has showcased incredible ball-handling skills and endurance during her short time with the club. She will surely show more during this season and in the future.
