“Not apologizing to the victim is crazy”: NFL fans rip Ja’Marr Chase as Bengals WR issues formal apology for spitting on Jalen Ramsey

Ja’Marr Chase is sorry for what he did two games ago, but not everyone is buying his remorse.

On Monday, the Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver issued a formal apology for spitting on Jalen Ramsey during a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Nov. 16. In it, he said:

“What I did was wrong. The circumstances don’t matter. My passion for the game is no excuse. There’s zero place in our sport — or in life — for that level of disrespect. … I let my emotions in the moment get the better of me. I can only hope and trust you know none of it represents who I am.

“I am committed to earning back your respect — not just with words, but with my actions, day after day, on and off the field. I promise to keep learning from this and to set a higher standard for myself moving forward.”

However, not everyone bought his apology:

@MySportsUpdate lmao his PR team wrote this to save his image. if he meant it, he would’ve at least put out a video or said it in person/public setting

@MySportsUpdate Meaningless apology, Chase not owning up to immediately after the game and lying about it is more than just being frustrated. True colours came out. Not naming Ramsey directly just shows how sorry he actually isn’t.

@MySportsUpdate Where’s the direct apology to @jalenramsey for spitting on him. @Real10jayy__ you should have at least told your PR/Crisis Management Team when they wrote this to put a sentence apologizing to Jalen. So, this apology means nothing until you apologize to the man you spit on.

@MySportsUpdate The Shia Labeouf of NFL apologies.

@MySportsUpdate Bro got that ChatGpt Apology

@MySportsUpdate He’s not even half sorry

Chase was suspended for the Bengals’ next game — a 26-20 loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday. He also had to forfeit $507,000 of his salary.

During the suspension, he worked out at the Sheakley Indoor Practice Facility and Performance Center at the University of Cincinnati. On Monday, he gave a good impression of it when speaking to radio announcer Dan Hoard.

Ja’Marr Chase was not allowed to be at Paycor Stadium last week while serving his one game suspension, so he worked out privately for several days at UC’s new Sheakley Indoor Practice Facility. He came away impressed when I asked him about it today.

Ramsey, meanwhile, was fined $14,491 for the incident but played in the Steelers’ 31-28 loss to the Chicago Bears.

Bengals HC Zac Taylor defends Ja’Marr Chase over spitting incident

While Ja’Marr Chase committed an unsportsmanlike act, the circumstances provide context. Jalen Ramsey initiated the incident by throwing a punch, and Chase’s response followed that provocation.

During the post-game presser, coach Zac Taylor defended him:

“Ja’Marr’s one of my favorite players. I love how this guy handles everything that he’s been a part of, so making one mistake doesn’t disregard everything this guy’s done that’s been positive for us. We’re not all perfect. We’re going to make a mistake here and there… I know it’s an emotional situation. … We’ll just continue to move forward.”

Chase is now slated to return against the Baltimore Ravens this Thursday. That game kicks off at 8:15 p.m. ET on Amazon Prime Video.
