Millionaire and Michigan fan wants his 'employee' and Super Bowl winner as Wolverines coach following Moore's dismissal

Michigan‘s search for a new head coach began under chaotic circumstances, and in the days since Sherrone Moore was dismissed the conversation surrounding the program has only grown louder.

Kalen DeBoer, widely respected for his work at Alabama and Washington, quickly emerged as a favorite among many Michigan fans. Yet Dave Portnoy, the Barstool Sports founder and well-known Michigan alum, was not convinced.

Instead, he floated the name of former Raiders coach Jon Gruden, arguing that the program should swing for someone with a Super Bowl background rather than settle for what he sees as a safer option.

“I don’t want to say I don’t want Deboer in case he gets the job, but I don’t want Deboer,” Michigan fan and Barstool Sports founder, Portnoy, did not mince his words. “Let’s just stop f****** around and give it to Gruden and go win a Natty.”

Portnoy’s comments arrived during a volatile stretch for the university. Shortly after Michigan announced Moore‘s dismissal, the former coach was detained by police in Saline before being transferred for further review of possible charges.

Portnoy’s influence and why he is advocating for a polarizing candidate

Portnoy has become one of the most visible backers of Michigan football in recent years, not only through commentary but also through substantial financial commitments. In September 2024 he pledged three million dollars per year to help Michigan pursue a top quarterback, a move he framed as a personal effort to keep the program competitive in the evolving NIL landscape.

He revealed that he and Urban Meyer had a 1,000-dollar wager tied to the Michigan and Ohio State matchup, with the loser directing the money to the other team’s NIL collective. Given his ongoing involvement, his views often attract attention even when they do not reflect the university’s direction.

Following Moore‘s exit, Portnoy posted the list of candidates he preferred to see Michigan consider.

“This is my short list. Gruden, Saban, Lanning, Jeff Monkin, Clark Lea, Kenny Dillingham, Deion,” he wrote. The collection spans national champions, rising stars, service academy coaches, and a former NFL head coach who has not held a major job since 2021.
