WWE has been the industry leader for decades, and the trend didn’t change under the new regime. Recently, Finn Balor blamed the company for inadvertently hurting the independent wrestling business with one of its actions.
A few years ago, WWE wanted to expand its reach, with each region having its own version of the developmental brand. While the idea didn’t work, NXT UK was the only brand to come to fruition, and the company signed several names from the independent circuit.
Thanks for the submission!
While the brand eventually ended in 2022, the company was able to acquire valuable stars from the independent circuit, which affected the business. In an appearance on What Do You Wanna Talk About? The Judgment Day’s Finn Balor explained how signing talent for NXT UK inadvertently affected the business on the British and European wrestling scene. The Prince further stated that the company’s decision had a huge negative effect on those markets for a while.
“When NXT U.K. started, which was a huge thing at the time for British and European wrestling, I feel like it kind of took all the talent, and it starved all the indies, and it took a long time for them to rebuild, and for a lot of them, it hasn’t even happened yet, because there’s no one to learn from or look up to. Like the guys Tyler (Bate) and Pete (Dunne) and everyone else who came to WWE. Now the younger kids don’t have anyone to learn from. So, I feel like there was probably a huge negative effect on the (pool) of talent that WWE took out of that territory, you know? But, slowly, it’s starting to rebuild,” Balor said. [H/T – Fightful]
What’s next for The Judgment Day’s Finn Balor on WWE RAW?
After a feud with Damian Priest on Monday Night RAW, Finn Balor shifted his focus towards the Intercontinental Championship. Unfortunately, he got pinned at WrestleMania 41 and lost the opportunity to hold the title against The Judgment Day’s Dominik Mysterio.
As tension grew between the two, Balor reunited with JD McDonagh and captured the World Tag Team Championship from The New Day. A few months later, the duo lost the titles to AJ Styles and Dragon Lee, and The Prince took a backseat from any major storyline.
The company will soon be on the Road to WrestleMania, and there’s a possibility that Finn Balor will be back in a title scene, most likely against Dominik Mysterio on WWE RAW. It’ll be interesting to see what’s next for The Judgment Day.
