The Rip is a Netflix action-thriller debut starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck as leads in a crime story filled with grit and suspense. Joe Carnahan wrote and directed the film, together with the story by Michael McGrale.
It is a strong, modern, and gritty cop movie with a hint of paranoia, where law enforcement is made to doubt the loyalty of their partners when money is involved.
The project was initially revealed in June 2024, and it instantly attracted public attention because of Damon and Affleck’s double role as actors and producers, since the two are also leading the production through their Artists Equity company.
The Rip is expected to hit Netflix on January 16, 2026, and has already started to create buzz through marketing, with its official teaser coming out on September 10, 2025, followed by a sneak peek on December 25, 2025, and the engagement of the full official trailer released on January 5, 2026.
Where was The Rip filmed?
Principal photography for the movie began in early October 2024 and continued into December, placing the bulk of filming during a tightly scheduled fall shoot. The listed filming dates run from October 2, 2024, to December 11, 2024, with principal photography specifically beginning October 3, 2024, in Los Angeles, and planned to wrap by December 11.
It used the following filming locations:
- Los Angeles, California, USA
- Long Beach, California, USA
- Hoboken, New Jersey, USA
- Miami, Florida, USA
- New Jersey, USA (additional areas beyond Hoboken)
New Jersey had a significant role, too. It was a different coast vibe that was probably needed for the film to contrast its West Coast filming base.
Serving as the cinematographer for the movie is Juanmi Azpiroz, a member of the crew with whom Carnahan is developing the film’s visual style.
Since Carnahan is both the writer and the director, the movie is conceived to have a consistent mood throughout, based on the components of tension, action beats, and distrust of institutions that are supposed to be the upholders of order.

What is The Rip about and who stars in it?

The Rip primarily revolves around a gang of Miami policemen whose personal and professional lives take a dramatic turn after they find a stash of millions in cash. The unearthing of such a massive sum leads to tension among the team, causing half of them to go against each other and breaking the trust that was there before.
Moreover, as people outside the group become aware of the confiscated money, the matter gets out of hand, and the main focus shifts to the questions of survival, secrecy, and who can be trusted when everything comes down to money and is life-threatening.
Simply put, it uses the money finding as a device to explore paranoia and the consequences of disintegration instead of something simply fortunate.
The cast of The Rip features:
- Matt Damon as Lieutenant Dane Dumars
- Ben Affleck as Detective Sergeant JD Byrne
- Steven Yeun as Detective Mike Ro
- Teyana Taylor as Detective Numa Baptiste
- Sasha Calle as Desi
- Catalina Sandino Moreno as Detective Lolo Salazar
