A Preview of the USWNT vs. Chile Game

The USWNT put together a flawless performance against Paraguay, absolutely dominating the South American side for a 6-0 win. Next, they take on Chile in sunny Santa Barbara in what will be another great showcase for the USWNT. Trinity Rodman debuted as a captain, a huge milestone in her career at just 23 years of age. Reilyn Turner made her first start and got her first goal for Team USA in the last match; someone else on the team is sure to make their debut with the chance to do the same. Let’s take a closer look at the USWNT vs. Chile.

After looking at Chile’s roster, this represents a new era for La Roja Femenina, with a large chunk of players under 27 and eight teenagers. That’s a lot of youth on the team as Chile looks to build its federation in a tough CONMEBOL region. Numerous key stars are out for Chile during this round of friendlies, including Christiane Endler, one of the best goalkeepers in the world. Without her in the net, this will be a tall task for Chile to get a result, and this matchup will be a great opportunity to gain experience against a superior opponent.

For the USWNT, it’s full steam ahead after their performance against Paraguay, who did well for a decent amount of the first half. However, by the second half, it got ugly. If you watch the replay of Trinity Rodman’s goal, Paraguay’s players are standing still without really pressuring the ball.

We witnessed a four-goal explosion over a 10-minute span between Ally Sentnor and Rodman, along with an own goal in between. This is a great sign of how explosive this team can be when everything is clicking. Claire Hutton put in a great shift in midfield, highlighting her consistent growth and adaptability. Expect Emma Hayes to rotate the roster so that every player in this camp gets some minutes, whether they start or come off the bench. Jameese Joseph, Yazmeen Ryan, Riley Jackson, Kate Wiesner, and Ayo Oke should be featured at some point.

Chile normally plays in a 4-3-3, which is an aggressive formation. It’ll be interesting to see if Chile decides to change its tactics and decide to sit back more. Paraguay had only two shots the entire game, none on target, and Chile is at risk of doing the same, which is why they may choose to attack. However, if they do, it will leave them far more exposed for the USWNT to exploit. Which would then lead to a similar result from the Paraguay match. Crazier things have happened in sports, but looking at how much youth the Chilean’s have brought into their team, this should be smooth sailing for the USWNT.
