After match 17, GG vs DC, the Smriti Mandhana-led side is still at the top spot on the points table in WPL 2026.
Delhi Capitals have put themselves in a spot of bother after their loss to Gujarat Giants in the 17th match of WPL 2026. The Jemimah-Rodrigues-led side faced a narrow three-run defeat at BCA Stadium, Kotambi in Vadodara on Tuesday. Asked to bat, Gujarat paved their way to 174 for nine, and then restricted Delhi to 171 for eight.
GG didn’t have a great start as they lost Sophie Devine early. But after that, Beth Mooney (58) and Anushka Sharma (39) stole the limelight with their brilliant batting, adding 54 runs for the second wicket.
Delhi then made a strong comeback with Shree Charani picking four wickets to leave the opposition at 139 for seven. It seemed that Gujarat would not even cross 150. But Tanuja Kanwer (21) came up with a vital cameo in the end to take her team to 174 for nine.
GG vs DC: Niki Prasad and Sneh Rana’s efforts goes in vain as Gujarat Giants win thriller
DC had a decent start to the chase with Shafali Verma and Lizelle Lee making vital contributions. However, both lost their wicket inside powerplay with Delhi at 51 for two. After that Laura Wolvaardt (24) and captain Jemimah Rodrigues (16) tried to keep the run rate under check. But, Gujarat tilted the game in their favour with four quick wickets, reducing Delhi to 100 for six.
With the team under pressure and Gujarat almost the favourites to win, there was a twist in the tale yet again. Niki Prasad (47) and Sneh Rana (29) joined hands and did something magical. The 20-run 19th over changed the course of the game as a 70-run partnership between Prasad and Rana almost took Delhi home.
With nine runs needed off last over, it was Sophie Devine’s masterclass yet again as she defended the target, removing both set batters to win the clash for her team on last ball.
