Jon Grudenhas decided to cut speculation off at the root. After days of media whispers that positioned him as a potential offensive savior for the New York Jets, the former Super Bowl-winning head coach finally broke his silence.

The longtime coach was not only clear, but forceful in categorically denying any formal contact from the New York franchise, labeling the recent reports as false and completely unfounded.
The controversy stemmed from a report by The Athletic, which suggested that Gruden had turned down an offer to join the Jets’ new coaching staff. However, during an appearance on Tampa Bay radio station 95.3 WDAE, the 62-year-old strategist left no room for doubt and provided no material for the media to continue fueling the rumors.

“There are a lot of reports we’re not even going to get into. There are a lot of stupid rumors out there. Some of these reports are ridiculous,” Gruden said, with clear frustration. To close the chapter, the coach clarified his current situation regarding the AFC East team: “Let’s just say there was never anything from the Jets, and I wish them the best in their search for a new offensive coordinator.”
Chaos in New York and Gruden’s exile
The connection of a high-profile name like Gruden with the Jets was rooted in the desperation of a franchise in crisis. New York‘s 2025 season was a historic disaster, finishing with the second-most points allowed in the league and ranking among the four worst teams both offensively and defensively.
Those results led to an obvious conclusion: an internal purge that included the midseason firing of defensive coordinator Steve Wilks and the departure of offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand at the end of the campaign.
Although the Jets have already named Brian Duker to lead the defense, the offensive vacancy remains open, and Gruden’s experience appeared attractive. For him, however, it is not a topic he wants to keep alive.
Gruden lost his head coaching position with the Las Vegas Raiders during the 2021 season following the leak of emails containing offensive content. Since then, while he has done sporadic consulting work for NFL teams, he has not held an official position.
With a career record of 117-112 and the glory of Super Bowl XXXVII with the Buccaneers on his rsum, Gruden remains an appealing figure for teams-but for now, that door is closed.
