He’s like Isak: Spurs have already signed a bigger talent than James Wilson

Well, that’s the January transfer window done and dusted, and unless ENIC Group fancy pinching the likes of Raheem Sterling on a free transfer in the coming days, that’s all she wrote for Tottenham Hotspur.

While Conor Gallagher has strengthened Thomas Frank‘s midfield, and Brazilian left-back Souza will provide competition for Destiny Udogie at left-back, there’s no question that fans feel their team have beden somewhat short-changed ahead of the business end of the season, a sentiment shared by club captain Cristian Romero.

Spurs secured a top-eight finish in the Champions League group phase, but lowly Premier League form has sent Frank’s early tenure into a spin.

There was a bit of transfer action on deadline day, though, with ENIC Group overseeing the signing of young Hearts striker James Wilson, one for the future.

Why Spurs signed James Wilson

The ripple effect might take a while to be felt, but the mood at N17 is one of excitement, with Tottenham having beaten Arsenal to the signing of 18-year-old striker Wilson, who has played his part this year as Hearts look to shatter the Celtic-Rangers monopoly in the Scottish Premiership.

Though many Gunners supporters will take this one on the chin with little frustration, Tottenham chiefs will feel some kind of vindication after missing out on Eberechi Eze last summer. A deal was all but in place before Mikel Arteta’s side hijacked the bid for the Crystal Palace talisman.

Wilson is young and inexperienced, but he is considered a top talent. He arrives on loan, with an option to make the move permanent come summer. A natural-born finisher, he has scored eight goals from 43 senior appearances for Hearts, earning his maiden Scotland cap in March 2025.

Still, having clocked only 77 minutes in the Premiership this year, Wilson has potential but not product at this stage. He will not be deposing Dominic Solanke as Frank’s number nine any time soon.

However, Wilson won’t find a clear pathway through to that top spot in Spurs’ senior side, with another young forward arguably packing more talent than the new recruit.

Spurs have already signed the “Irish Isak”

Tottenham have ebbed and flowed under Frank’s wing this season, but there’s no doubting the potential that courses through the north Londoners’ lower ranks, with Mason Melia a shining example of the up-and-coming quality.

It was decided before the end of the transfer window that Melia would not leave the club on a short-term loan deal for the remainder of the season and would instead be given the chance to train with the first team and develop his skills.

Melia initially agreed to move to Spurs in 2025 but officially signed and arrived at Tottenham in January once he’d turned 18, finalising the £3m transfer from St. Patrick’s Athletic that made him the most expensive departure in Irish football history.

However, he arrived nursing a small back problem, so he has not featured for the development side yet. For club officials to fast-track the 18-year-old to first-team contention already makes a firm comment on his potential, but it’s not that surprising.

Described as “the Irish Alexander Isak” by GOAL writer Sean Walsh for his long frame, sharp speed and inner dynamism, Melia has enjoyed a prolific start to life on the major stage, posting 25 goals and eight assists across 98 senior outings for St. Pat’s.

He’s caught the eye considerably, with Ole Gunnar Solskjar who knows a thing or two about poaching goals, hailing his efforts after his Besiktas side had played St Pats in a Conference League qualifier. He said: “You see a mature finisher. I don’t want to put too much pressure on him. I always follow the young players when I see them early in their careers. There are a few decent players I played with from Ireland, so I have a fond eye for Irish players.”

Solskjaer added: “Melia has a bright future ahead of him, keeps getting runs and getting in the good areas. One of the things I like most about him is his attitude towards pressing: he does his defensive job as well. In the second half, he was tasked with sitting on one of our midfielders and he did the job.”

Indeed, Melia’s ability to drop the shoulder and turn with pace is a skill that comes naturally. It will serve him well, especially when considering the effect it could have on Tottenham’s progressive play – something that has been lacking this season, and no mistake.

Of course, the physicality and aggressive nature of the Premier League will act as a deterrent for Melia and Wilson as they look to nail down spots in Frank’s side, but the depth of Melia’s quality should see him shine through.

Powerful and already a physical nuisance for defenders, Melia could prove an obstacle for Wilson to move around, someone who will pose a threat to his claim for a senior role. For the Spurs board, this is a good problem to have, in fairness.

Melia (and Wilson) has a lot of work to put in before he can stand proud as Tottenham’s leading goalscorer, but the potential is there, and if he plies a long career at the club, he may one day find himself rivalling some of the great Lilywhites goalscorers.

While Frank will need a sharp upswing over the coming months if he is to save his job, the likes of Melia will provide Tottenham’s manager (whoever that might be) plenty of joy over the coming years. How much of a part he will play this season remains to be seen, but make no mistake, this is a future superstar.
