Sachin Tendulkar comes up with heartwarming gesture for U-19 World Cup winner Ayush Mhatre

India U-19 captain Ayush Mhatre shared a heartfelt video from his official Instagram account on Monday, February 9, capturing one of his most memorable days as a cricketer.

In a warm gesture, Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar presented Mhatre a special signed jersey after India’s successful campaign in the recently concluded U-19 World Cup, where the Boys in Blue claimed the trophy, defeating England.

In the summit clash of the tournament, Team India played in a dominating way, mostly supported by the 14-year-old opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who registered a standout innings of 175 off 80, the best ever knock recorded in the history of the U-19 World Cup Final. Mhatre contributed with a half-century, and India, in their 50-over limit, confirmed a massive total of 411 against 9 wickets.

The target proved too massive for the English batters, who went to chase the target in the second innings. England Under-19, under pressure, scored 311 for all 10 scalps, which was a pretty good total, but not enough to surpass India.

The young team of the Indian cricket claimed the title on February 6, and Mhatre shared the video three days later, on February 10, with the caption, “I grew up watching you through a screen. Today, I stand at your home, holding a piece of your journey in my hands. Thank you, Sir, for this honor. I will carry this with the same respect you carried Indian cricket for years.”

Ayush Mhatre did a decent job as a batter

Ayush Mhatre, as a batter, did a decent job behind the team’s success. The 18-year-old batter scored 214 runs in seven innings, averaging 30.57 at a strike rate of 113.22, including three half-centuries. After Mohammad Kaif, Virat Kohli, Unmukt Chand, Prithvi Shaw, and Yash Dhull, Mhatre lifted the trophy as the sixth captain of the Indian U-19 national cricket team.

The emerging talent will be back in action with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to play the IPL 2026 season. He joined the franchise in the middle of the IPL 2025 season, in place of injured captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. Mhatre’s inclusion proved significant for the future of the team.

CSK showed trust on Ayush Mhatre

The right-handed batter featured in seven IPL 2025 matches for CSK to score 240 runs in seven innings at an average of 34.28 and a strike rate of 188.97. These stats were powered by a 94-run innings and a half-century.

Ahead of the IPL 2026 mini auction, Chennai Super Kings retained Mhatre for the next season, showing their trust in his talent. For CSK in the previous edition of the Indian Premier League, he mostly came under the spotlight because of his attacking batting approach. But for India, he tried to bat, maintaining a less reckless approach. It will be interesting to see, for which role CSK will like to utilise the batter in the upcoming season.
