The Shinsengumi Scheme in Nioh 3 is one of the initial side quests that you can access during your time in the Bakumatsu era. It starts with a man’s soul mentioning that the Shinsengumi are planning something, where your main objective is to investigate the situation. That said, getting to the required location can be quite tricky in this mission.
Here are the details on how to complete the Shinsengumi Scheme in Nioh 3.
Shinsengumi Scheme side quest in Nioh 3: Location
First, you must complete the first mission of the Bakumatsu period, A New Era main quest, defeating Takasugi Shinsaku at the end. From the boss battle’s location, proceed forward to access the Shimabara Pleasure District – Main Gate shrine.
Then head south for a bit until you come across a man’s soul standing in front of a red lamp. Speak with him to start the Shinsengumi Scheme side quest in Nioh 3.

Shinsengumi Scheme side quest in Nioh 3: Walkthrough
Pursue the Shinsengumi in Shichijo
From the quest’s starting location, proceed through the pathway in the south, defeat the enemies, and at the end of the road, take the right turn.
After dealing with the enemies there, head east using the rooftops to reach the next shrine, Shichijo Avenue Ruins, of the Shichijo region.
Now, keep going northeast to start a boss fight against Shinsengumi Member Hattori Takeo.
If you have the Living Artifact available, utilize that to deal with him quickly. Otherwise, you can solely rely on Guardian Spirits or Soul Core abilities to dismantle the boss. This battle should be relatively easier than what you’ve faced in the story’s earlier quest.
When Shinsengumi Member Hattori Takeo is beaten, head east for a bit and go right to find a Spirit Vein there. Use that to reach a lower segment of the location.
Next, continue south to reach another shrine, Shichijo Abyss- Stratum.
From there, proceed east and use the canon to break the barrier ahead.
Then move forward to the north and enter the left side house through the opening. Continue northeast to reach an open area filled with enemies.
After clearing the area, take the narrow downhill path going southwest. Drop from the rooftop to the ground.
Defeat the assailant ()
Finally, enter the cave and interact with the body in the corner to trigger some dialogue. After a bit, a boss fight against Saito Hajime will begin. Overwhelm him using the Guardian Spirit abilities and Soul Cores.
After defeating Saito Hajime, collect the drops and then talk to the quest giver nearby to complete the Shinsengumi Scheme side quest in Nioh 3. You will then receive the following rewards:
- Kobizen Odachi
- Smithing Text: Kijinmaru Kunishige
- Samurai point x1
