2026 Winter Olympic showing : Matt Weston is in a dominant position to win Great Britain’s first medal of the 2026 Games in the Skeleton event on Friday. After the first two runs on Thursday, February 12, the Team GB star leads the field with a combined time of 1:52.09.
Annoyed remark : However, Weston, 28, wasn’t totally satisfied with his performance. He said: “I was quite annoyed after the first run. I tried to be a bit too relaxed because I tried to over-compensate for race-day nerves. It’s pretty crazy [to be the overnight leader] but I take every run as run one. I will completely reset myself, switch off for a bit and then refocus on Friday.”
Background: Born in Redhill, England, Weston was a high-level athlete in other sports before finding skeleton. He was a junior taekwondo champion and European Cup gold medalist. He played rugby for the Saracens Academy.
Romantic life:Weston is set to marry his partner, Alex Howard-Jones, in July 2026, following the conclusion of the Winter Olympics.
Transition to Skeleton : Weston joined the British Skeleton program in 2017 through a talent identification scheme after a stress fracture in his back ended his taekwondo career.
Career Achievements : Weston is a Double World Champion after he won the individual gold at the World Championships in 2023 and 2025.
World Cup Dominance : He has won the overall World Cup title for three consecutive seasons in 2023–24, 2024–25, and 2025–26.
Performance History : He made his debut at the Beijing 2022 Olympics, where he finished 15th. In November 2021, Weston won his first ever World Cup gold medal after finishing in a three-way tie for victory in Innsbruck.
