Australia lost to Sri Lanka in T20 World Cup 2026.
Australia have put themselves in a spot of bother in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026. After their loss to Sri Lanka in the third game of the tournament, they are on the verge of elimination now with qualification not in their hands now.
Asked to bat, Australia had a dream start to their innings with Travis Head (56) and captain Mitchell Marsh (54) taking on bowlers right from the start. The duo added 104 runs for the opening stand to put Sri Lanka under pressure.
However, Sri Lanka was quick to make a comeback as they picked wickets in quick time, leaving Australia at 130 for four. Glenn Maxwell (22) and Josh Inglis (27) played decent hands under pressure, taking their team to 181.
Sri Lanka lost Kusal Mendis early, but what unfolded after that was absolute carnage. Pathum Nissanka (100) and Kusal Mendis (51) took Australia bowlers to cleaners, slamming them all over the park.
They added 97 runs for the second wicket with Mendis taking the aggressive route. After Mendis got out, Nissanka took charge and slammed a brilliant century to take his team home with eight wickets in hand.
Australia Qualification Scenario for Super 8 of T20 World Cup 2026
Here is how Australia can qualify for Super 8 of T20 World Cup 2026
- Australia’s fate now depends on the fixture between Ireland and Zimbabwe. If Zimbabwe win, they move to 6 points. As a result, Australia will be knocked out.
- If Ireland win, Australia will then have to once again hope Zimbabwe loses to hosts Sri Lanka.
- If Zimbabwe lose both their matches, only then will Australia stand a chance to reach the Super 8. They will have to win with a decent margin against Oman, to surpass Zimbabwe on Net Run Rate.
