Sri Lanka have almost knocked Australia out of the T20 World Cup 2026. They defeated the 2021 champions by eight wickets at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele on Monday. Asked to bat, Australia posted a total of 181 – all out, in response, Sri Lanka batted brilliantly, chasing the target in 18 overs.
Australia had a dream start to their innings with Travis Head (56) and captain Mitchell Marsh (54) coming out all guns blazing. The captain-vice-captain duo added 104 runs for the opening stand to put Sri Lanka under pressure.
But the co-hosts were spot on after that as they made a terrific comeback and reduced Australia to 130 for four. Glenn Maxwell (22) and Josh Inglis (27) played decent hands under pressure, while the rest failed. Australia got all out for 181 with Dushan Hemantha picking three wickets.
Pathum Nissanka’s 100 takes Sri Lanka to Super 8 of T20 World Cup 2026
In the chase, Sri Lanka lost Kusal Mendis early, but what unfolded after that was absolute carnage. Pathum Nissanka (100*) and Kusal Mendis (51) took Australia bowlers to cleaners, slamming them all over the park.
They added 97 runs for the second wicket with Mendis taking the aggressive route. After Mendis got out, Nissanka took charge and slammed a brilliant century to take his team home with eight wickets in hand and took his team to Super 8.
