The NFL rumor mill barely had time to warm up before a potential reunion began gaining traction. Within hours of the Tyreek Hill release from the Miami Dolphins, one of his former teammates was already making a public pitch for his return to Kansas City.
Defensive star Chris Jones didn’t waste time. Shortly after reports surfaced that Miami planned to move on from the eight-time Pro Bowler, Jones tagged Hill on social media and posted a simple but loaded message: “It’s time,” accompanied by a clock emoji.
The two spent the first six seasons of their careers together with the Kansas City Chiefs, winning a Super Bowl and helping build one of the league’s most explosive eras.
Hill‘s departure from Miami marks the end of a four-year chapter that began with massive expectations. Acquired in a blockbuster trade in March 2022, Hill immediately justified the hype.
He opened his Dolphins tenure with back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons and delivered a spectacular 2023 campaign in which he led the NFL with 1,799 receiving yards. His game-breaking speed once again made him one of football’s most feared offensive weapons.
However, the past two seasons told a different story. Hill failed to eclipse 965 receiving yards in either year, and injuries ultimately derailed his 2025 campaign just four games in. A torn ACL, dislocated knee and additional ligament damage forced him to the sidelines and cast uncertainty over his immediate future.
Miami’s decision to release him reportedly frees up roughly $23 million in salary cap space, signaling both financial and roster recalibration.
Reunion that makes sense?
Kansas City has quickly emerged as a logical landing spot. Hill was originally selected by the Chiefs in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft and blossomed into a cornerstone of the offense alongside quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
During his time in Kansas City, Hill recorded four 1,000-yard seasons and played a vital role in the franchise’s championship breakthrough in Super Bowl LIV.
While the Chiefs traded Hill in 2022 to reshape their roster and maintain cap flexibility, the idea of bringing back a proven playmaker carries intrigue. Familiarity with the system, chemistry with Mahomes and the endorsement from Jones only add fuel to the speculation.
Other teams are expected to explore the possibility as well, including the Los Angeles Chargers, where former Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel now serves as offensive coordinator. Still, Kansas City feels different – not just as a fit, but as unfinished business.
Hill addressed his release with a message of resolve, stating that his journey is far from over and that he remains fully focused. Whether that next chapter unfolds in familiar red and gold or somewhere new, one thing is certain: when healthy, “The Cheetah” remains one of the NFL’s most electrifying talents – and teams will be watching closely.
