Tua Tagovailoa’s former teammate gives clear verdict on Malik Willis’s impact on Dolphins amid free agency

The Miami Dolphins are in a complicated spot with Tua Tagovailoa following a disappointing 2025 season. The team might target Green Bay Packers backup quarterback Malik Willis, who played behind Jordan Love last season, in free agency.

Former Dolphins offensive tackle Terron Armstead shared his stance on Miami targeting Willis.

“I think Malik Willis is that insurance plan,” Armstead said on Sunday, via “The Rich Eisen Show.” “I’m looking at the talent, man. I’ve seen him come in at different times and run that Green Bay Packers offense and look exceptional and look the part.

“I can only imagine with a full offseason full training camp, full preseason, what that would look like, and how much better he’ll be, how much comfortable he’ll be. I think having Malik Willis in their back pocket, especially with his price tag because he can’t ask for too much, he hasn’t had many snaps. I think that it definitely helps their situation.”

Willis completed 30 of 35 passes for 422 yards and three touchdowns with zero interceptions in four games. He added 123 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Tagovailoa signed a four‑year, $212.4 million extension in July 2024, including $167 million guaranteed. His 2026 salary is fully guaranteed at $54 million. Tagovailoa was benched in Week 16 for rookie Quinn Ewers.

While the 2023 Pro Bowler could stay with the Dolphins because of massive cap implications, they are likely to cut ties with the quarterback.

Dolphins GM on Tua Tagovailoa’s future in Miami

Miami will take a dead‑cap hit of $99 million if it lets Tua Tagovailoa go before June 1. Dolphins general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan discussed the quarterback’s situation on Feb. 13.

“Tua was in my office the other day, we had a great conversation,” Sullivan said. “Tua knows where we are, we’ve been very honest and upfront. We’re getting close to a decision.”

Tagovailoa understands that the quarterback room could look different in 2026. However, he is uncertain about what his role would be. The Arizona Cardinals, Las Vegas Raiders and the New York Jets are floated as his potential destinations.
