The arrival of Darian Mensah in Miami reignited fans’ hopes of returning to the CFP Championship Game. Takai Azziz, a former teammate of the star quarterback, shared this sentiment and recently revealed the reasons behind his decision to reject Coach Prime to follow his old friend.
After completing his junior year at Allan Hancock College, Azziz decided to hit the transfer portal, making the jump from JUCO to “The U,” and offers poured in.
Initially, Azziz had committed to Deion Sanders’Colorado Buffaloes. However, last-minute news made him change course and head to Miami.
The news? Mensah’s arrival to the Hurricanes. In an exclusive interview with Clutch Points, the young cornerback revealed how much Mensah influenced his decision and what he’s seen so far in Miami.
Azziz and Mensah have been best friends since high school
The bond between Mensah and Azziz runs deep. They played together at St. Joseph High School, back when Mensah lined up as a wide receiver.
That relationship proved pivotal in Azziz’s decision. “Yes, of course,” said the cornerback. “Darian is one of my best friends, my brother.”
He added, “I was originally preparing to commit to Colorado when Darian entered the picture.” The chance to reunite was too good to pass up.
“Glory be to God, the stars aligned, and we get to play together next season,” Azziz said.
For the two of us, this is really a dream come true-something we talked about back in high school.
Azziz is impressed with Miami’s coaching staff
Beyond his friendship with Mensah, Azziz praised head coach Mario Cristobal and his staff. “Very easy-going and approachable coaches. All like minded,” he said.
He emphasized that while the Hurricanes’ coaches are welcoming and upbeat, they also carry a competitive edge. “I could tell they all had that switch to them,” Azziz explained.
With spring training just six weeks away, fans will soon see what Azziz and Mensah can bring to Miami from their respective positions on the field.
