Ipswich Town are now plotting a proposal to sign a “phenomenal” striker, who has been likened to Bayern Munich star Harry Kane.
Ipswich keen on summer move for new striker
Ipswich are firmly in the Championship automatic promotion race, keeping the pressure on second-place Middlesbrough by securing a 2-0 victory at Watford on Tuesday night, with Sindre Walle Egeli and George Hirst getting on the scoresheet.
Hirst has fallen down the pecking order in recent weeks, having not exactly been prolific in the Championship this season, but the same can be said about Kieran McKenna‘s other centre-forwards, with Ivan Azon and Chuba Akpom netting five goals between them.
The Tractor Boys are six points behind Boro in the Championship table, with two games in hand, meaning their lack of a consistent centre-forward hasn’t held them back in their promotion push, but they may need to bring in another striker if they are promoted to the Premier League.
That is exactly what the Championship promotion-chasers are planning to do, according to a report from Sports Boom, which states they are now plotting a proposal to sign Tottenham Hotspur striker Will Lankshear, who is currently on loan at Oxford United.
Stoke City are also in the race for Lankshear, but Mark Robins’ side are on the back foot, considering they are 13th in the Championship table, having been in very poor form prior to a 2-1 victory against Oxford United last time out, while Ipswich are pushing for automatic promotion.
The 20-year-old has been compared to Tottenham legend Kane, but the north Londoners are looking to loan him out again next season, and want the youngster to start gaining experience in the Premier League, which hands the Portman Road outfit a key advantage in the race as things stand in the table.
“Phenomenal” Lankshear gaining Championship experience
Lauded as “phenomenal” by journalist John Wenham, the centre-forward has started gaining experience in senior football this season, making 32 Championship appearances on loan at Oxford United, during which time he’s chipped in with six goals and one assist.
While the Englishman hasn’t exactly been prolific, he has been playing for a side at serious risk of being relegated, which always makes things difficult, and there are signs the starlet could flourish in a better side, having netted 26 goals in 35 matches for Spurs’ U21s.
However, even though Ipswich definitely need to sign a striker, with Hirst, Akpom and Azon struggling for goals, it would be a gamble for Ipswich to bring in such an inexperienced centre-forward in an attempt to keep them in the Premier League.
Striker is not the only position in which the Tractor Boys are looking to strengthen in the summer transfer window, with it recently being revealed they have surged into the race for a new winger…
