49ers GM John Lynch makes stance clear on Max Jones’ return in 2026

Followng Mac Jones’ strong showing in Brock Purdy’s absence last season, the backup quarterback has been linked with a trade away from San Francisco. Although Jones is heading into the final year of his contract, the 49ers want to bring him back for the 2026 season.

49ers general manager John Lynch shared the team’s stance on Jones’ return for 2026 season.

“He’s really good for us and we value that,” Lynch said. “And so somebody would have to come with something fairly strong for us to consider trading him. And then I don’t know what we do. Obviously there’s always something that would make you do it.

“But I think we’re a better team with him on it. And we just like having him around. As we saw this year, your franchise guy goes down, and it’s nice to have someone like that.”

While the 49ers want to bring back Jones as Purdy’s backup, he is attracting interest from teams in need of a starting quarterback.
