Ravi Shastri to have stand named after him at Wankhede Stadium | CricTracker

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has approved the proposal to have a stand named after Ravi Shastri at the Wankhede Stadium. The Level 1 Stand below the Press Box will be named after the former India captain. The decision was confirmed at the MCA Apex Council meeting on February 27 (Friday).

Shastri, who played 80 Tests and 150 ODIs for India, represented Mumbai in domestic cricket. He was India’s head coach from 2017 to 2021, a period in which India finished as runners-up of the Champions Trophy 2017, semi-finalists of the ODI World Cup 2019, and endured a league-stage exit in the T20 World Cup 2021. Shastri also oversaw India’s maiden Test series in Australia in 2018-19, followed by another win in 2020-21.

“It is in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Mumbai and Indian cricket, both as a player and as a coach,” the MCA said in a statement.

Additionally, the Apex Council also green signalled the naming of three gates of the stadium after former India cricketers Dilip Sardesai (Gate No. 3), Eknath Solkar (Gate No. 6) and Diana Edulji (Gate No. 5).

“These legends have played a pivotal role in strengthening Mumbai’s rich cricketing legacy and have made immense contributions to Indian cricket at the highest level. The initiative aims to permanently commemorate their achievements and inspire future generations of cricketers and fans visiting the stadium,” the MCA said.

    MCA president Ajinkya Naik said:

“Mumbai cricket is built on the foundation laid by our stalwarts. It is our responsibility to honour those who have brought pride to the city and the nation. Naming the Level 1 Stand below the Press Box after Ravi Shastri is a tribute to his immense contribution as a player, leader and coach.

“Similarly, dedicating gates at Wankhede Stadium to Dilip Sardesai, Eknath Solkar and Diana Edulji ensures that every fan who walks into the stadium is reminded of the legends who shaped our glorious cricketing heritage. These decisions reflect MCA’s commitment to celebrating its past while inspiring future generations.”
