Chelsea and Arsenal are reportedly set to battle for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) star Senny Mayulu. The teenager has broken into Luis Enrique’s plans at the Ligue 1 club, but contract talks have stalled.
According to a report in Caught Offside, Mayulu’s contract situation has seen Chelsea jump into the race for the teenager. They see him as an ideal player who can be used as Cole Palmer’s backup in the central attacking role, while also operating deeper in midfield or leading the attack when needed.
Thanks for the submission!
Arsenal have been keeping tabs on him for some time, and see him as the ideal long-term successor for Kai Havertz. The PSG star has similar attributes to the German and has been operating in the same role as the 26-year-old has played under Mikel Arteta.
PSG are not interested in letting go of their youngster, who has played 72 matches for the first team, and Enrique has been vocal about his backing. He heaped praise on the Frenchman earlier this season, hailing him as a key player in the club’s future, and said:
“I like him a lot. I was delighted he stayed. It’s hard to be a starter at PSG, especially in this PSG. He’s important for the club’s future and can become a key player here. We tested him as a full-back tonight and he can also play there. He has a strong personality and is always ready. He always trains well, even if he plays less than he’d like, but he has great character.”
The Caught Offside report suggests that PSG would be open to selling Mayulu this summer, as he will enter the final year of his contract with the Ligue 1 side. They have reportedly slapped a £61 million asking price on the 19-year-old.
Arsenal vs Chelsea set to see a host of players miss out
Arsenal host Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday, March 1, and the two sides are without a host of players. The London derby is the third clash between the two sides in less than 45 days, after the two meetings in the Carabao Cup semifinals.
Mikel Arteta’s side are without Mikel Merino and Ben White, while Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka are facing late fitness tests. Max Dowman is also expected to be sitting out.
Liam Rosenior’s side are without Levi Colwill, Dario Essugo, Marc Cucurella, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, and Estevao. Wesley Fofana is suspended after his red card vs Burnley during the 1-1 draw last weekend.
