Rangers had a Moore upgrade on trial who’s now worth more than everyone at Ibrox

Glasgow Rangers are currently third in the Scottish Premiership and are running out of games to mount a serious title challenge to avoid ending the season without a trophy.

Whilst they are still aiming for their first title since the 2020/21 campaign, the Light Blues are already making plans for the upcoming summer transfer window.

The Scottish giants are reportedly prepared to back head coach Danny Rohl with a ‘major’ spending spree to bolster the squad with several new signings.

It has been claimed that the Gers are looking at a centre-back and a right-back to add to the group in the summer, whilst they also want to sign Mikey Moore on a permanent basis.

The England youth international is on loan at Ibrox from Tottenham Hotspur, who are currently battling against relegation from the Premier League.

Why Rangers want to sign Mikey Moore permanently

The confidence and authority that Moore plays with as an 18-year-old loanee in his first season of regular first-team football is extraordinary.

After a slow start at Ibrox under Russell Martin, who only won one league match as manager, the English winger has found his feet in Glasgow under Rohl, establishing himself as one of the first names on the teamsheet.

The teenage sensation has scored five goals from 3.76 xG and created six ‘big chances’ for the team in 17 Premiership starts for the Light Blues this season, showcasing quality as both a scorer and a creator of goals from a wide or attacking midfield position.

It should come as no surprise, therefore, that Rangers would be interested in signing the 18-year-old on a permanent basis, as he is already a key player for the club at such a young age and it remains to be seen just how high his ceiling is.

Because of that, though, it could be an incredibly costly deal. He is valued at £13.8m by Transfermarkt and Rangers have never spent more than £12m on a player in their history.

The Gers now have new owners in the 49ers Enterprises.

Whilst Moore currently looks unattainable because of his market value, the Gers once had a star on trial who is now worth even more than the Spurs youngster.

Rangers once had the chance to sign a young talent after they had a trial with the Light Blues, and they would now walk into the team over Moore.

In October 2023, the Scottish giants had Ivorian winger Yan Diomande on trial from DME Academy with the youth team for a clash with AS Monaco, but he did not end up signing for the club.

Speaking about it earlier this year, Diomande revealed: “I was on trial at Glasgow Rangers. It’s not true that I didn’t want to sign for them – my agent at the time demanded too much money.”

Whilst the exact figures were never revealed, it is unlikely to have cost the Gers more than it would currently cost to sign the star, given the trajectory of his career since that trial.

18 months on from his game for Rangers, the electric forward signed for LaLiga side Leganes in January 2025 and scored two goals in ten league matches before signing for RB Leipzig last summer.

Since joining the German outfit, Diomande has racked up 11 goals and seven assists in 27 appearances in all competitions, including ten goals in 24 Bundesliga games.

The Ivorian winger, who has scored three goals in nine caps for his country, is currently valued at £38.8m by Transfermarkt, whilst Liverpool have been linked with interest in a £87m deal for the attacker ahead of the summer window.

Diomande is now worth more than every single player at Ibrox, including Moore, and it is not even close. The speculation linking him with a £87m move to Liverpool says it all – Rangers missed out on a player with world-class potential.

He has scored more goals and provided more assists in one of Europe’s top five leagues than Moore has managed in the Premiership for Rangers this season, whilst both playing as a winger, and is only one year older (19) than the Spurs loanee (18).

It is an unfortunate situation for the Gers, as it may not have been so obvious that he would go on to explode in the way that he has when they saw him during his trial game.

In another world, Rangers are storming their way to the title with Moore and Diomande on the wings, causing havoc in the final third, but it was not to be.
