Manchester United are a club that looks set for a huge overhaul in the summer, with numerous key decisions to be made on and off the pitch during the off-season.
Michael Carrick will lead the side until the summer at least, but no decision has yet been made over the 43-year-old’s long-term future as boss at Old Trafford.
He’s certainly made an excellent stake to secure the job on a permanent basis, only losing one of his first eight Premier League games in charge of the Red Devils.
However, on the pitch, further additions are expected to help the club rise up the league table and potentially mount a push for a title battle during 2026/27.
One area of the pitch in particular could be set for added improvements, that’s despite the club spending big on bolstering the department during the summer of 2025.
Man Utd enter talks to land a new talisman
Despite landing the signatures of the likes of Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha in the summer, United look set to once again land a new attacker during the off-season.
Over recent days, the Red Devils have been credited with an interest in landing Athletic Club star Nico Williams in the upcoming window, but they could face competition for his signature.
Arsenal are another English side named with an interest in the Spanish international, who has registered seven combined goals and assists so far this term.
Williams isn’t alone on their radar ahead of the summer window, with Inter Milan’s forward Pio Esposito another player currently being considered by the hierarchy.
According to CaughtOffside, the Red Devils have already made contact with the Italian giants over a deal to land the 20-year-old, who’s scored eight times across all competitions this season.
The report also states that Mikel Arteta’s side have also registered interest in the centre-forward, with no fee being touted for his signature ahead of the off-season.
The lack of a fee for his services could certainly be down to Cristian Chivu’s side’s reluctance to offload the youngster, with the article stating the player is not for sale.
Why Esposito could be the next Hojlund for United
Away from the recent flurry of summer additions, United have previously spent big on attacking reinforcements in an attempt to return to their former glory.
Rasmus Hojlund is just one example of the club’s heavy spending in recent times, subsequently joining the club for a reported £72m including add-ons.
Such a move was one of the most expensive in the club’s history, but it’s safe to say his time at Old Trafford fell way below the expectations of the supporters.
Man Utd’s most expensive signings of all time
A number of their additions haven’t lived up to expectations.
The Danish international scored 26 times across 95 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils, before returning to Italy on loan for the ongoing season.
The 23-year-old is expected to join Napoli on a permanent basis in the summer, which could free up valuable funds to land new attacking talent for any new manager.
Esposito is just one option currently being considered, but if he’s not careful, he could suffer the same fate as Hojlund should he move to the Theatre of Dreams.
However, during his breakthrough year at the San Siro, the youngster has produced numerous impressive figures, which could see him catch the eye in the Premier League.
The Italian star, who’s already scored eight times, has also produced numerous impressive underlying figures, which could certainly aid him in his quest for success at Old Trafford.
Esposito, who’s been dubbed “incredible” by talent scout Antonio Mango, has achieved a 37% shot on target accuracy rate, whilst placing 1.4 shots on target per 90.

The latter of the aforementioned stats is higher than any member of the United squad this season, whilst also ranking him within the top 12% of all players in Serie A this season.
He’s also created 1.3 chances per 90 so far this term, along with 2.8 aerial duels won – numbers which could make him the perfect all-round option for the Red Devils.
Esposito’s all-round nature is certainly impressive, especially considering his tender age, which could allow for United to have yet another talented focal point alongside Sesko.
The Italian also possesses a fox-in-the-box poacher-type playstyle, subsequently registering 8.1 touches in the opposition box per 90 – placing him in the top 8% of all attackers in Italy.
Inter’s reluctance to sell Esposito could make a deal somewhat hard to complete this summer, but it’s evident that the youngster would be yet another impressive addition.
United’s recent additions from Serie A would no doubt produce a cause for concern, but the Italian’s physical assets would make him a much more suited addition than Hojlund.
Beating Arsenal in the race for his signature would no doubt be another statement of intent, with his potential arrival handing the club an added boost in their hunt to return to glory.
