16th seed Naomi Osaka will lock horns with Australian qualifier Talia Gibson in the second round of the Miami Open, with the winner taking on either 18th seed Iva Jovic or Paula Badosa in the third round of the WTA 1000 tournament.
Osaka has won five out of seven matches so far this season, with her most recent tournament being the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. The Japanese booked her place in the fourth round of the tournament with wins over Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva and Camila Osorio. Here, she faced World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and triumphed 6-2, 6-4.
Talia Gibson’s start to the 2026 season has been promising so far, with the Aussie being perhaps the surprise package in Indian Wells, as she reached the quarterfinals after making the main draw through the qualifiers. The 21-year-old then entered the Miami Open qualifiers and booked her place in the main draw with straight-set wins over Ekaterina Gorgodze and Kamilla Rakhimova.
Gibson faced fellow qualifier Sara Bejlek in the first round in Miami and produced a dominant performance to win 6-1, 6-0 and reach the second round of the WTA 1000 event.

Osaka will enter the match as the favorite to win. But given Gibson‘s recent run in Indian Wells and how she pretty much annihilated her competition in her previous match, the Aussie cannot be written off. It should also be noted that the 21-year-old did not make things easy for the former World No. 1 when they last met at Wimbledon, as she won around 44% of the points.
Osaka won 88 out of 129 points (~68.2%) on her first serve in Indian Wells, amassing 17 aces from three matches. The 28-year-old has an effective serve and will look to make the most out of it, as well as her clean hitting. Osaka has been resurgent over the past year or so, and things are bound to get difficult for Gibson.
The Aussie won 21 out of 31 points (~67.4%) on her first serve during her opening-round win at the Miami Open, serving four aces and three double faults. Gibson plays aggressively and will have to attack as much as she can while also trying to force Osaka into making unforced errors.
Eventually, it might come down to temperament. However, this is where the Japanese has a significant edge due to her experience, and should be able to come out on top.
