Rotherham now talking about hiring ex-West Brom boss after whispers of Baggies return

Rotherham are on the look out for their next permanent manager after sacking Matt Hamshaw, and a former West Brom boss, who’s been linked with a return to the Baggies, is in their thinking.

    West Brom considering managerial future

West Brom are not a club used to living on the edge like this.

Five consecutive seasons in the Championship, and now, with eight games remaining, they are staring into the abyss.

James Morrison’s side sit 21st in the table — just one point above the relegation zone — fighting to avoid a drop into League One for the first time since 1993.

There have been some desperately dark moments this term.

Ryan Mason, appointed in the summer on a three-year deal, lasted until January after a run of dreadful results.

Eric Ramsay was parachuted in as his replacement, arriving from Minnesota United with little Championship experience and even less time to prove himself — nine games, no wins, and he was gone too.

West Brom star with a “very high ceiling” could be their new Harvey Barnes

James Morrison could find his own Harvey Barnes in this West Bromwich Albion star who is tipped for greatness.

Morrison, the club legend, was given the keys for a third time on an interim basis and confirmed as manager for the rest of the season on March 4, with former fans favourite Darren Moore among those touted for the role before the decision was made.

The 3-0 win over Hull City last Saturday will have felt like breathing again.

Goals from Josh Maja, Aune Heggebo and a stoppage-time Isaac Price finish ended a 13-game wait for a league victory and lifted the Baggies out of the bottom three.

Hull, who boast one of the Championship’s best away records, had Charlie Hughes sent off midway through the first half and were never in it after that. It was exactly the kind of afternoon a desperate fanbase needed.

But with Bristol City away today and the weeks ticking down, every point matters — and the managerial question has not fully gone away.

Rotherham talking about hiring Darren Moore after West Brom whispers

Moore, who spent just under a year as Baggies boss between 2018 and 2019 and made over 100 appearances for the club as a player, was widely reported as a frontrunner to replace Ramsay before West Brom committed to Morrison short-term.

He has been out of work since being sacked by Port Vale in December.

Now, Sports Boom claim that Rotherham are also circling around the 51-year-old.

Rotherham are holding internal discussions over their own managerial rebuild — and Moore is one of three names being seriously considered.

The Millers parted ways with Hamshaw earlier this week after a 5-0 thrashing at Peterborough and have installed Lee Clark as a short-term fix.

But with the board aware that significant work lies ahead regardless of whether they escape the League Two drop, they are already thinking bigger picture.

Moore, Darrell Clarke and Darren Ferguson are understood to have been discussed, with all three bringing lower-league promotion pedigree.

Moore has managed in Yorkshire three times previously — at Doncaster Rovers, Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield Town — and Rotherham’s interest makes sense on paper.

For West Brom, it matters less in the immediate term now that Morrison is confirmed.

However, should the Baggies survive and look to make a permanent summer appointment, seeing a familiar and popular name tied up elsewhere would narrow the options considerably.
