With the launch of Season 4, Last Epoch is set to introduce Omen Windows. These are fast-paced enemy encounters upon interacting with an Omen Window, which are very similar to the Breach mechanics from Path of Exile (PoE). While on the surface level, both activities are quite similar, in both cases, you participate in a timed combat scenario against increasing waves of enemies for massive amounts of loot. But under the surface, it’s quite different.
In this guide, we will break down what makes the Omen Windows of Last Epoch Season 4 different from the Breach mechanic from PoE.
Last Epoch: What are Omen Windows and how do they work?
Omen Windows are random encounters that can appear in both the campaign and the Monolith of Fate. They appear as fracture windows on the map; when you enter the circle, the window will shatter, and an Omen will appear. This is a new type of enemy in Last Epoch.
The encounter will unfold in two phases. Here’s how they work:
Phase 1: Setup

During the opening phase of the Omen Window, the Omen is completely invulnerable. Instead of attacking you directly, the omen will summon Fractured Enemies and start buffing them by tethering itself onto them.
You will need to eliminate these enemies to fill up a progress bar while staying inside the activity ring. Step outside and the Omen will disappear.
Phase 2: Boss fight

Once the progression bar is full, the Omen absorbs all the remaining enemies inside the circle and gains new skills. Defeating the Omen boss rewards you with valuable loot like corrupted items, Rune of Corruption (required to corrupt regular items), and Timeless Fragments.
There are also different tiers of difficulty that scale the number of enemies you fight and the overall reward you get. Omens also spawn with varying abilities, allowing players to encounter different kinds of Omens in Last Epoch Season 4.
Furthermore, you can encounter a stronger variant of the Omen Window, called the Greater Omen Window. These act as a high-stakes encounter in Season 4.
How does Breach work in PoE

The Breach mechanic is one of the most loved league mechanics in Path of Exile. Here’s how the core loop works:
- You activate the Breach tear in the world.
- The Breach keeps spreading outwards over time.
- You need to slay enemies quickly to keep the Breach open for a longer period of time.
- The longer you can keep the Breach open, the more enemies you face while getting more loot in return.
- Collect Splinters dropped by enemies during the encounter. Combine the Splinters to create a Breachstone.
- Use it to enter the Breachlord’s domain to engage in a boss fight and receive exclusive rewards upon beating it.
This system is designed for testing the player’s clearing capability in PoE.
What makes the Omen Windows unique in Last Epoch
While it’s easy to see the similarities between the two systems. Both of these activities utilize a combat zone that forces you to play aggressively, along with heavy time restraints. Both game modes also feature unique boss encounters and rewards that scale with difficulty/performance.
However, Omen Windows takes the system a step further by adding more depth and balance instead of the pure chaos of the Breach (PoE). Here are the key features that make Omen Windows distinct:
- Fights during Omen Windows are split into multiple phases, smoothly transitioning from mob clearing to boss encounter.
- Enemies are constantly getting buffed by the Omen during the initial phase, creating a situation where you have to prioritize targets.
- Omen Windows are specifically tied to the Monolith endgame mechanic of Last Epoch.
- Omen Windows are less punishing than the Breach of PoE, making it more accessible to casual players.
In my opinion, the Omen Windows of Last Epoch clearly takes inspiration from PoE’s Breach, especially regarding mob density and rewarding aggressive playstyles. However, it remains a distinct feature and not a direct copy. Omen Windows are smoother with multi-layered combat scenarios that feed perfectly into the endgame of Last Epoch.
