Michelle Smallmon Backs Victor Wembanyama’s MVP Case With ‘Ridiculous Box Office’ Verdict

ESPN radio host Michelle Smallmon backed Victor Wembanyama in the MVP race. Smallmon gave her opinion on the Spurs star’s chances at the MVP award on Tuesday’s episode of ESPN’s “Unsportmanlike.”

Wemby has been impressing analysts and fans with his performances throughout the season. The Spurs big man is averaging 24.3 points, 11.2 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game on 50.4% shooting.

“He is as close to perfect as we have seen from a modern day athlete and he is so dominant,” she said. “He is so good at basketball in a body that you don’t expect to move like that. He is as much as must see TV as we have in sports today. I would say he and Ohtani.”

Later, the radio host referenced Kendrick Perkins’ comment on the Spurs star.

“Iman Shumpert shared with us yesterday that Kendrick Perkins was telling him ‘I wanna pay to see Wemby play.’ I feel the exact same way, he is box office.”

Victor Wembanyama is leading the race for the Defensive Player of the Year award, apart from making a strong MVP case. He is averaging 1.0 steals and 3.0 blocks per game this season.

Zach Lowe declared Victor Wembanyama ‘Most Dominant Defensive Player’ ever

Renowned sportswriter Zach Lowe declared Victor Wembayama as the most dominant player he has seen in the league since the 1970s. Lowe showered praise on the Spurs star on Sunday’s episode of the “Bill Simmons Podcast.”

He’s the most dominant defensive player I’ve ever seen already,” he said. “I am not that old, but I’ve seen Garnett, Olajuwon, Kawhi… all the guys post 70s, and I don’t remember anything like this.”

Earlier, the sportswriter said that there was no statistical metric that could evaluate the Spurs’ big man’s defensive impact on the floor.

“I don’t know that any statistical system can quantify what he is doing on every single possession defensively,” he said. “Everything is different when he is on the floor and I don’t even know how to measure that.”
