Wolverhampton Wanderers could find it difficult to keep hold of one of their key players this summer, with Tottenham Hotspur recently making an approach.
De Zerbi poised to become new Spurs boss
Roberto De Zerbi was initially hesitant to take over before the summer, with Tottenham teetering just above the Premier League relegation zone, but ENIC have now made a breakthrough, and the Italian is close to replacing Igor Tudor in the dugout.
De Zerbi’s first and most important task will be to keep Spurs in the Premier League, and he has seven crucial games coming up, potentially starting with a trip to Sunderland on Sunday.
However, in the summer, the former Brighton boss may want to bring in players to fit his style of play, which has earned plaudits from Liverpool manager Arne Slot, who said: “I regard him as one of the best managers in the world, because in my opinion, that should not always be judged on the amount of trophies you win, it should also be judged on the fact of how you let your team play.”
Spurs make approach to sign “sensational” midfielder
According to a report from Caught Offside, Tottenham and Chelsea have now made contact to sign Joao Gomes, who is set to push hard to leave Wolves at the end of the season, with his side staring down the barrel of relegation.
Manchester United, Newcastle United and Napoli have also asked about the in-demand midfielder, who is expected to cost €40m – €45m (£35m – £39m) if, or when, Wolves are relegated to the Championship, rather than the €60m (£52m) which was quoted previously.
Lauded as “sensational” by journalist Alex Richards, the Brazilian maestro has performed well this season, despite the Old Gold’s struggles, averaging a FotMob match rating of 7.03, which is the highest in the squad.
Defending is the 25-year-old’s strong suit, with the Wolves star averaging 3.3 tackles per 90 in the Premier League this season, which is more than any Spurs player except Joao Palhinha, who is averaging 4.9.
The fact Gomes’ asking price is set to drop in the summer is an added bonus for the north Londoners, who clearly need to strengthen the squad, having underperformed massively this season, and the ten-time Brazil international could be an exciting first signing for De Zerbi.
