“It’s over”, “Wild”: Fans in dismay after Victor Wembanyama injury sends shockwaves across NBA

San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama suffered an injury in the second quarter of their game against the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday. Wembanyama’s injury had NBA fans in dismay on social media, especially with the Spurs big man’s eligibility to win awards in jeopardy.

Early in the second quarter, Wembanyama collided with Paul George in what was a physical game since tip-off. He was grabbing his shoulder, so a lot of people were concerned about it since the playoffs will start in a couple of weeks.

The Spurs would later announce that Wembanyama has been ruled out for the rest of the game with a rib injury. It was a little bit confusing since he was grabbing his left shoulder initially. Nevertheless, it was a tough blow for the team since Joel Embiid was having himself a game in the first half.

Victor Wembanyama just played 16 minutes in the first half. It fell under one of his 20-minute exemptions, which is part of the 65-game rule. He will have to play one more game since the NBA Cup Final counts to his tally.

But as for his injury, it baffled some of the fans, leading to a lot of reactions on X, formerly known as Twitter.

It’s over. WTF this guy 7’2 for a weak injury

Wembanyama aint getting DPOY now lmao all the spurs fans laughing at Luka caused this

I thought it was his shoulder ? Ain’t sh*t wrong with that n*gga lmao

Lmaoooo all of a sudden it’s his rib Ggs why he even come back in the first place lmaoooo

Described as a rib contusion, Victor Wembanyama was out for the entire second half. He left with 17 points, five rebounds and three blocks. Luke Kornet started in his place, as the San Antonio Spurs still proved why they are more than just Wemby’s team.

They dispatched the Philadelphia 76ers, 115-102, to win their 60th game of the season. Stephon Castle led the way with 19 points, nine rebounds and 13 assists. De’Aaron Fox added 13 points.

The bench trio of Kornet, Dylan Harper and Keldon Johnson were also a spark, combining for 40 points. As for the Sixers, Joel Embiid’s 34-point performance wasn’t enough.

Victor Wembanyama needs to play another game to win NBA awards

Due to the 65-game rule, Victor Wembanyama will have to play one more game this season to be eligible for awards. Wembanyama is the favorite to win the NBA Defensive Player of the Year, possibly even set to become the first unanimous winner.

Wembanyama is also making things interesting in the MVP race, especially after helping the Spurs win 60 games. His offense isn’t as impressive as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s numbers, but his defense is out of this world. And with Luka Doncic potentially ineligible, it might be a two-player race now.
