The Indian Premier League (IPL) has witnessed many breakthrough seasons by rookie players, making a major statement and utilising the platform to get attention in the cricketing fraternity. However, the competition is so ruthless that a certain section of players have failed to replicate their initial heroics, and as a result, have faded away from the scene.
That was the fear associated with the likes of Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Priyansh Arya, and several others who came into the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 on the back of a prolific breakthrough campaign last year. The second season blues have claimed several talented players, but Vaibhav Suryavanshi has yet again shown why he is different from the other prospects that have graced this competition so far.
He kick-started the campaign with a blistering, record-breaking 15-ball fifty against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The youngster has only gone and followed it up with impactful cameos against the Gujarat Titans (GT) and the Mumbai Indians (MI).
Suryavanshi has shown no signs of slowing down after scoring 122 runs at an improved average and strike rate compared to his debut season last year. However, not all prospects have had the same fate as him.
On that note, let us take a look at five players who flopped after an impressive debut season in IPL history.
#1 Umran Malik
Although the right-arm pacer featured in a couple of matches in the IPL 2021 campaign, he began the season as a net bowler, and was drafted into the main squad as an injury replacement. His proper debut IPL season was in 2022, where he made a statement and a half.
Regularly breaching the 150, and even the 155 kmph mark in the campaign, he was being touted as a generational prospect. It was only pace that kep Umran Malik relevant as he also picked up 22 wickets that season to make a very stong start to his IPL career. He was the leading wicket-taker among Indian pacers that season, and he was soon rewarded with a call-up to the Indian T20I squad.
However, he could not replicate his heroics in IPL 2023. He picked up only five wickets in eight matches at an average of 43.40 and an economy rate of 10.85. The drop-off has been a massive one as he has only played one IPL game since that dismal 2023 season. Injuries and poor form have derailed his career, as he currently sits on the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) bench awaiting a chance to reignite.
#2 Jake Fraser-McGurk
The emerging Australian opener became an instant hit after coming into the IPL 2024 season as an injury replacement for Lungi Ngidi. Featuring in more than half of the season, the explosive opener was a massive revelation as he scored 330 runs at an average of 36.67 and an astonishing strike rate of 234.04.
DC went all out to re-sign him at the mega auction ahead of IPL 2025, but his second season turned out to be a colossal disaster. Jake Fraser-McGurk could follow up with only 55 runs in six matches at an average of 9.17 and a strike rate of 105.77, before he departed the tournament due to personal reasons. He went unsold in the IPL 2026 Auction as well.
#3 Swapnil Asnodkar
One of the names that the streets wont forget in the IPL circuits is Swapnil Asnodkar, and his role in Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) iconic triumph in IPL 2008. The young opening batter had forged a solid chemistry with Graeme Smith and became a soild opening pair for the Shane Warne-led side.
He was the second-highest run scoring Indian that season for RR, placed only behind Yusuf Pathan. Asnodkar recorded 311 runs in nine matches at an average of 34.55 and a strike rate of 133.47. However, his numbers took a massive dive in IPL 2009, where he scored only 98 runs in eight innings at an average of 12.25 and a strike rate of 105.37. Over the next couple of seasons, he played only three matches, scoring 14 runs in total.
#4 Manpreet Gony
A key player for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their run to the finals in IPL 2008, Manpreet Gony formed an iconic quatret with Albie Morkel, Lakshmipathy Balaji, and Makhaya Ntini. The right-arm pacer ended up being the leading wicket-taker for CSK that season, and the joint third-highest overall, with 17 scalps at an average of 26.05 and an economy of 7.38. Soon after, he also made his debut for India in the 2008 Asia Cup.
However, he could not make a similar impact next year as he only picked five wickets in seven matches at an average of 34.40 and an economy of 10.11. Although he played IPL cricket until 2017, he never reached double digits in terms of his wicket-tally.
#5 Mayank Markande
The Indian wrist-spinner had one of the most memorable IPL debuts with a spell of 4-23, including the prized scalp of MS Dhoni at the Wankhede Stadium in the 2018 season opener. He had a solid debut season, picking up 15 wickets in 14 matches at an average of 24.53, and an economy of 8.36.
However, he could only muster three appearances in the next season, picking up only one wicket at an average of 59. Markande was soon released, and since then, he has had stints with the Rajasthan Royals (RR), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), and the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), but is yet to discover his former best self.
