Kofi Kingston came to prominence as one of the most captivating and tenured WWE superstars of all time. He signed with the promotion in 2006 and made his main roster debut in 2007. Kingston began experiencing success as a singles performer, winning multiple mid-card and tag team titles. However, his career took a major turn when he, Big E, and Xavier Woods came together to form ‘The New Day’ in 2014.
The trio went on to win 13 tag team championships in WWE. Moreover, it led to Kingston winning his first-ever WWE title at WrestleMania 35, a moment that became synonymous with the name ‘Kofi-Mania.’ However, in a surprise turn of events, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods left WWE recently, ending Kingston’s 18-year tenure with the promotion. According to reports, TKO asked the duo to take a pay cut and restructure their existing deal. Moreover, Kingston subtly confirmed the same with his first statement post-WWE exit.
“Do not ever compromise or accept less than your due when it comes to your worth. Find the courage to believe in yourself and fearlessly pursue your goals and dreams, because anything is possible. The kid that was too small, short, skinny, and scrawny was never supposed to make it in this land of giants…yet here we are. And so……as the sun sets on one chapter, so too must it rise in another. Tomorrow is indeed…a New Day.” he wrote.
They refused and left the Stamford-based company, sparking rumors that one or both of them would join rival promotion AEW. Should Kofi Kingston become a part of the All Elite roster, here are six possible directions for him to explore in the next phase of his wrestling career.
#6. A new version of The New Day
One of the most significant chapters in Kofi Kingston’s WWE tenure was his time as a member of The New Day. Alongside Big E and Xavier Woods, the trio became one of the most accomplished teams in professional wrestling. Should Kingston sign with AEW, he can be expected to go down a similar path. This could see the former WWE Champion create a second coming of the New Day with young and rising stars on the All Elite Wrestling roster.
#5. Dream matches
Kofi Kingston has wrestled some of the biggest names in professional wrestling, like Randy Orton, Daniel Bryan, CM Punk, and more. However, there are many top stars on the current AEW roster that Kingston has never even crossed paths with. If he decides to join the Jacksonville-based promotion in the future, it could open the doors to major dream matches with stars like Darby Allin, MJF, and Kenny Omega. Moreover, one fascinating name is the rising high-flyer and current TNT Champion, Kevin Knight, who has the ability to deliver a stellar showdown with a veteran like Kofi Kingston.
#4. Kofi Kingston become mentor to a young and rising star in AEW
Kofi Kingston is one of the most successful wrestling veterans in the business. He has been an in-ring performer for almost two decades. An interesting booking in AEW could see the former WWE Tag Team Champion enter the promotion as a mentor figure to an upcoming talent like Kevin Knight. With Kingston’s experience and taking a young star under his wing, it could be his way of giving back to the wrestling business.
#3. Tag team title run with Xavier Woods
Should Kofi Kingston and his partner, Xavier Woods, debut in AEW as a team, an expected direction could be going after the AEW World Tag Team Championships. The New Day members held every major tag team title in WWE and would want to add an All Elite tag belt to their illustrious collection. Moreover, this could also elevate AEW’s tag division with veterans like Kingston and Woods being at the top.
#2. Dream match with The Young Bucks
It is no secret that The Young Bucks have openly said about having a potential dream showdown with The New Day down the line. With Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods no longer part of WWE, Tony Khan could capitalize on their availability and sign them to AEW. Should that happen, Matt and Nick Jackson could finally get their wish of squaring off with The New Day members, which could be one of the biggest tag team matches in AEW history.
#1. AEW World Champion
One of the most memorable programs of Kofi Kingston’s WWE tenure was climbing the top of the mountain. In 2019, his popularity skyrocketed to the point that fans wanted to see him compete for the World title at WrestleMania. Overcoming multiple obstacles, Kingston defeated Daniel Bryan in memorable fashion and became the new WWE Champion at WrestleMania 35. AEW could recreate a similar program if Kofi Kingston decides to sign with the promotion, culminating in him becoming the top titleholder in Tony Khan’s company and having a run as the AEW World Champion.
