Indian veteran opener Rohit Sharma missed out on the chance to record successive hundreds after being caught in the deep for 92 in the third ODI against West Indies. The Hitman was looking set for a third hundred in four games, but perished while attempting the pull shot in the 25th over in Mullanpur on Saturday, October 3.
After a breezy hundred in the recent record run chase in Guwahati, Rohit Sharma was made to work hard in the series finale. India were reduced to 4-2 in the third over after Jayden Seales dismissed both Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli in quick succession.
Rohit Sharma had to be patient against the new ball, especially after the fall of early wickets. He forged a vital stabilising partnership with Ruturaj Gaikwad as India scored only 28 runs in the first powerplay.
Rohit Sharma ramped up the gears in the middle overs, reaching his fifty off 63 deliveries. He then took on the spinners Vitel Lawes and Gudakesh Motie for six boundaries over the next set of overs to race into the nineties. The Hitman faced three dot balls in a row against Keemo Paul before trying to take him on with a pull shot.
However, the star batter could only connect it with the toe of the bat as the ball spliced towards deep midwicket, where Jewel Andrew took a composed catch. Have a look at the dismissal right here:
This marks the first time that Rohit Sharma has been dismissed in the nineties since the fourth ODI against Australia in Mohali, seven years ago. On that occasion, Jhye Richardson dismissed him for 95.
India’s middle order has a go with the bat for the first time in the series after Rohit Sharma’s dismissal in IND vs WI 2026 3rd ODI
The successive eight-wicket wins in the series meant that the Indian middle order did not get a chance to bat. However, with Rohit Sharma departing at the halfway mark of the innings, vice-captain KL Rahul got an opportunity for the first time.
Ruturaj Gaikwad, on the other hand, has made the most of his opportunity at No.4 again by crossing the 50-run mark for the third time in ODIs. At the time of writing, India are placed at 159-3 after 28 overs.
