WPL 2023 [Twitter reactions]: Meg Lanning, Jess Jonassen shine as Delhi Capitals beat UP Warriorz

In the fifth match of the ongoing Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023, Delhi Capitals defeated UP Warriorz at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai on Tuesday.

Put to bat first, the Capitals got off to a good start, with opener Shafali Verma and captain Meg Lanning adding 67 runs. Shafali was dismissed for 17, but Lanning kept her end alive and continued the beating. The DC skipper played an incredible innings of 70 runs from just 42 deliveries with the help of 10 fours and three sixes.

Jess Jonassen also chipped in with a crucial 42 off just 20 balls, laced up with three fours and as many sixes. The Capitals eventually finished with a formidable total of 211/4 in their 20 overs.

In response, the Warriorz could only manage to reach 169/5, losing the contest by 42 runs. Despite wickets falling from one end, Tahlia McGrath kept the fight alive for the Warriorz with a stunning unbeaten knock of 90 from 50 balls, including 11 fours and four sixes.

However, McGrath didn’t get much support from the other end, and UP fell short of the target by 42 runs. Jonassen, who shined with the bat, was the pick of the bowlers for Capitals, bagging a three-wicket haul for 43 runs.

“Tonight it was probably Jess the batter. Went for a few runs at the end (with the ball). I love batting. Nice that it came off tonight. The wicket was incredible. She definitely hits me for quite a few sixes in the nets (Healy). Happy to get one over her. Always an enjoyable competition when we come up against one another,” said Jonassen after bagging Player of the Match award.

IND VS AUS: When Kohli Walked Out To Bat- Todd Murphy Shares His Nervous Encounter With Ace Indian Batter

IND VS AUS: India will be gearing up for the fourth and last test match of the Border Gavaskar Trophy ( BGT) 2023, at Ahmedabad. The home side is leading the series by 2-1 against Australia, Men in Blue needs to win the last test match to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) final, whereas Aussies have reached WTC Final after avoiding the clean sweep in the series.

Australian spinner, Todd Murphy dismissed Virat Kohli three times out of five occasions in the Australia tour of India 2023. Murphy grabbed his Baggy Green cap in the first test match at Nagpur, he shares his experience while bowling to the ace Indian batter in his debut game-

Australian leg-spinner feels bowling to Kohli is very intimidating-

It’s been awesome. When I look back to Nagpur when Kohli walked out to bat, I was sort of at the top of my mark thinking ‘this is as good as it gets’ getting to bowl to a guy like that,”

To be able to have that for the first three Tests has been awesome, a really enjoyable battle and no different to bowling to a lot of their guys when they stand there, it is daunting at times,” expressed Murphy.

Murphy who hasn’t played much first-class cricket has been impressive for Australia in this series. In his debut for Australia in the opening game of the series and has picked up 11 wickets so far in this series.

It is always nice when plans come off, Nagpur wasn’t an ideal dismissal, but you take what you can get, so to have a couple of times the last few games has been really nice and validation that what we are thinking works,”

Indian ace batter Virat Kohli has struggled in the BGT 2023 series with 111 runs in five innings. In the second test match at Delhi, Kohli was stumped on Todd Murphy’s delivery in the second innings of the test match.

Australian spinner has now unleashed themselves after the third test match, with Nathan Lyon’s first 10-wicket haul in India in the last match, while Matthew Kuhnemann complimented the other two spinners in the series. It will tough road for Men in Blue in the series-deciding test match on 9th March at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

  • England make best of limited ODI schedule to hone World Cup squad

England make best of limited ODI schedule to hone World Cup squad

Seven months is an eternity in the mayflyesque lifecycle of a professional sportsperson, but that far out from October’s 50-over World Cup England’s preparations are almost done. After the completion of their ODI series against Bangladesh, their next match in the format is scheduled for just a few weeks before they head to India, and following the three T20s with which they conclude this tour the white-ball group will not meet up again until September.

This trip was originally scheduled for the autumn of 2021, but its eventual place in the calendar has proved far more useful. “This was our last opportunity to get together, and we’ve been exposed to the conditions that we want to be exposed to,” Matthew Mott, England’s white-ball coach, said. “If we’d come over here and had flat, belting wickets, it wouldn’t have been the same experience. We’ve had to work for everything and you can’t buy that. I mean, if we were asking to construct the perfect series, this is the perfect series for us.”

At the end of it, a certain amount has become clear. Of the 15-man squad he will eventually name for the World Cup, Mott says there are “seven or eight spots that you could probably lock in”. It is not hard to imagine which names are already inked in, though the only one Mott actually named was Jofra Archer, who has continued a gradual reintroduction to international cricket here. “He’s building and by the time we get to the Ashes and the World Cup, you can just see he’s ticking all the boxes to get back to his best,” said Mott.

Beyond individuals there are certain types of players that are desired: Mott’s ideal XI would contain, for most matches in India, “three spin options and a little bit of variety in that as well”. So Liam Livingstone joins Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali on the lock-in list if he returns to form and fitness, but either Will Jacks, Rehan Ahmed or another spin-bowling all-rounder who makes a compelling case over the next six months is likely to be in the squad as back-up (Joe Root, who has not bowled at all in 89 of his 158 ODIs, including eight of his last nine in Asia, looks like an option of last resort).

Jofra Archer made a welcome return to form and fitness in the Bangladesh series. Photograph: Gareth Copley/Getty Images

Mott would also like “players capable of batting in the top six and bowling key overs”. This means the ODI-retired Ben Stokes, of course, but the search for alternatives explains Sam Curran’s audition at No 5 in Monday’s final game in Chattogram.

“I’m still in touch with him but the issue about whether he wants to play, we don’t need to know for a while,” Mott said of Stokes. “I’d say halfway through the summer, gauging on how he’s feeling physically and mentally, will be [when] we see whether he wants to put himself up for selection. And we’d welcome him back. If you’ve got a person who can bowl any over in the game and make big hundreds as well, every team would cry out for that. But the worst thing we could do is try to put pressure on him to make a decision early.”

    Thank you for your feedback.

Among the batters, both Jason Roy and Dawid Malan have scored match-winning and reputation-enhancing centuries in Bangladesh, the former having apparently recovered from his annus horribilis in 2022 – not that Mott, despite dropping him from his T20 squad last year, ever seriously considered jettisoning him altogether.

“He averages 40 and strikes at over 100 [in ODIs] – it’s very hard to leave players like that out,” he said. “He will go up there as one of the greats. There is no doubt that he was under pressure, but not in our minds. The knock he played the other day, with the ball spinning, was a bit of a masterclass in how to play in these tough conditions. He is definitely right up there.”

    skip past newsletter promotion

Those two innings have informed the team’s template for the ideal performance in these conditions, demonstrated both by Malan’s contribution to victory in the low-scoring series opener in Dhaka, and by Monday’s defeat in Chattogram in a game of batting cameos.

“All the stats show in the subcontinent that teams that win, someone makes a big contribution and others bat around them,” Mott said. “It’s trying to adapt our batting style. It’s always been pretty free-flowing but there’s a realisation in certain conditions we just need to make sure someone really takes ownership. It’s getting that fine balance between aggression and playing smart games in different conditions. That’s the evolution – it’s finding a way.”

There is still time for fresh names to emerge with a spell of sustained success in franchise competitions – “We’ve got eyes everywhere at the moment,” says Mott – but there is already a surfeit of viable options. “I think it’s going to be a really difficult team to pick,” Mott said. “When you add four or five players back in that mix, there are going to be some really hard calls. There’s going to be some class players that miss out. All you can do [as a player] is present ready, fit, and then the rest is up to us I guess.”

  • Pictures of Ahmedabad pitch emerge on social media; India-Australia in a conundrum over the nature of track

Pictures of Ahmedabad pitch emerge on social media; India-Australia in a conundrum over the nature of track

India and Australia are currently involved in the high-voltage Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Both sides have faced each other in three matches, in which the hosts won the first two Tests while the touring party came out victorious on one occasion.

In most parts of the Test series, pitches have become a major talking point, with all three Tests getting over within three days. Notably, the surfaces for the first two Tests in Nagpur and Delhi received an ‘average’ rating, while the strip for the third Test in Indore was rated ‘poor’ by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

No wonder the Ahmedabad pitch is already at the centre of attention ahead of the upcoming match. A few pictures from the stadium have emerged, but the Australian camp hasn’t been able to decide their strategy for the must-win contest.

It is also reported that the curators have not received any instruction from the Indian team management or the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about the preparation of the track. So far, it seems even the Indian camp has confusion over what kind of pitch they want to be prepared.

“We haven’t received any instructions from the Indian team management, and our local curators are preparing a normal track, as we have always done through the season,” said a state association source as quoted by the news agency PTI.

“Obviously, (over the) last few days, the BCCI’s grounds and pitches committee instruct the local curator … but, certainly, from our end, our endeavour is to produce a good Test match pitch,” the source added.

    Here are a few pictures:

The Narendra Modi Stadium, where the final Test will be played, has hosted two Test matches since its million-dollar renovation – both against England in 2021. The first of the two Tests against the English side wrapped up inside two days as the Indian spinners wreaked havoc, claiming 35 of the 40 wickets.

Legends League Cricket (LLC) has announced the latest additions to its Masters’ bandwagon, revealing the new set of players who will join the tournament. On Monday, the India Maharajas confirmed the signing of three notable former players – Harbhajan Singh, Murali Vijay, and Stuart Binny – to further strengthen their squad. Meanwhile, the Asia Lions have secured the services of former Pakistan fast bowlers Mohammad Amir and Sohail Tanvir, while the former England captain, Paul Collingwood, will be joining the World Giants.

We have a strong squad that looks balanced in all departments, and I am really excited to take to the field with my old friends and teammates.”

Amir will be the youngest player on the Asia Lions squad, known for his ability to swing the bowl both ways, he has been a game-changer for the Pakistan team on many occasions. “I will be playing alongside some of my former teammates, but at the same time, some of the legends whom we have grown up seeing in action, like Shoaib Akhtar and Abdul Razzaq. I am very sure that it is going to be an exciting contest, and I am looking forward to it,” added Amir.
