  • Would new PGA Tour model have stopped defections?

Would new PGA Tour model have stopped defections?

The PGA Tour is going to reward the biggest stars with as many as 11 tournaments that have small fields, big money and no cuts.

    This should sound familiar.

And there is no denying it would not happened without the threat and the disruption of Saudi-funded LIV Golf.

But it raises a question that might shed light on the differences between the rival circuits. If this had been in place two years ago, how many of the 36 PGA Tour players who defected to LIV Golf would have stayed?

“Zero to five,” Jordan Spieth said in offering his best best, which is all anyone can do. “It’s still not guaranteed money, or that level of guaranteed money.”

That remains one of the differences in the two models.

The PGA Tour has put the prize fund at $20 million for its big events, just like LIV Golf, except with larger fields and more fresh faces. LIV is locked in with the same 48 players and the occasional alternate. But without a cut, the money effectively is guaranteed on both circuits.

Not to be overlooked, however, is that LIV players like Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Cameron Smith and Bryson DeChambeau – all of whom have won majors in the last five years – received a signing bonus of what has been reported to be in the $150 million neighborhood.

That was more appealing than a chance to play for the Iron Heads or the Hy Flyers.

Spieth still can recall being at a Rolex dinner during the U.S. Open last year when Koepka was part of a group that was circling the wagons for the PGA Tour. And then a week later, Koepka signed for the Saudi money and was gone.

“The easy way out,” is how Rory McIlroy described players leaving for LIV when their prime years were still ahead of them.

The new PGA Tour model effectively creates two tours, but players – no matter their world ranking or what they have done lately – still have to perform.

The top players are guaranteed spots on LIV for multiple years regardless of how they play. That aspect – more than the lack of a 36-hole cut or 54-hole events – is what led to suggestions the Saudi-funded league would be merely an exhibition.

PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan and his predecessor, Tim Finchem, share more than Irish heritage. Both have taken ideas from Greg Norman, the latter having created the World Golf Championships that were similar – but not identical – to the Shark’s failed plan of a World Golf Tour in the mid-1990s.

The PGA Tour stole a page from LIV’s playbook by not having a cut, effectively assuring sponsors and television that all the best players will play four rounds in the eight designated events, along with the three FedEx Cup playoff events.

It effectively creates a two-tier system. Then again, it’s been that way for the 25 years the WGCs have been around. Now those will be gone after this year.

The biggest criticism for the PGA Tour is doing away with a cut, regardless of its history of having no-cut events. Five years ago, the PGA Tour schedule had nine no-cut events, though not everyone felt compelled to play them (three were in Asia in the fall).

Tiger Woods, who has 26 no-cut victories among his 82 wins on the PGA Tour, was said to be among those who felt strongly about a cut, perhaps because he rarely worried about weekends off. Woods failed to make the cut seven times in his first 13 years on tour.

What the tour got right, however, was providing enough of an avenue for those who aren’t at the elite level or are trying to earn their way back. Ten spots will be awarded to leading players from the current FedEx Cup standings, some of that from points accrued in the fall. Five other spots would come from points earned at tournaments that year.

“As long as you’ve got a tee time, good golf takes care of everything,” J.T. Poston said in January as the system was being developed.

    Performance still matters

Jon Rahm, Si Woo Kim and Nico Echavarria already have won this year. About the only thing they have in common is that all start from scratch when they get to Kapalua in January.

It’s hard to argue with how these designated events are working with the star power that keeps showing up at the end. Scottie Scheffler won in Phoenix. Rahm won at Riviera. Bay Hill was the latest example on multiple levels.

The five-way tie for the lead in the final hour featured Scheffler, Spieth and McIlroy. That the winner was Kurt Kitayama also was telling.

Only 18 months ago, Kitayama was in the Korn Ferry Tour Finals just to get a PGA Tour card. Then, he finished third in the Honda Classic. He was runner-up to Rahm in Mexico. He got into the Scottish Open and was runner-up again. He finished 40th in the FedEx Cup.

That would have been enough to get him into a tournament like Bay Hill under the new system that starts in 2024.

There are sure to be others like him.

If not, there’s always the B-flight, which doesn’t look so bad when the purse is $8.1 million (Valspar Championship) or $8.9 million (Valero Texas Open). Equally appealing is not having to face the usual list of all-stars to cash in.

The verdict won’t come until next year when this plays out. Spieth is among those who fear players who don’t qualify for the elite events might be tempted to join LIV. So this might not be the last of the defections.

That would go back to the question raised at the very start of this fracture in golf, whether players are motivated more by money or competition.

  • Man Utd: Bruno Fernandes might grind your gears, but the Gary Neville-led pile-on is out of order

Man Utd: Bruno Fernandes might grind your gears, but the Gary Neville-led pile-on is out of order

Bruno Fernandes was crap at Anfield. That’s absolutely fair comment. A lot of what has been said in the aftermath of a humbling, soul-destroying humping at the hand of Manchester United’s arch-rivals is not.

Fernandes was the captain of the ship that sunk without a trace in just over 45 minutes on Sunday. His team-mates were equally as wretched – actually, in many cases, they were worse – but as the skipper of Erik ten Hag’s crew, Fernandes is copping considerably more flak than anyone else.

As Harry Maguire has discovered, that’s part of the territory that comes with wearing the armband when United have one of their moments. The elastic on the bicep, as well as his style of leadership, puts Fernandes firmly in the firing line when the Red Devils surrender as they did on Sunday.

But that does not warrant the pile-on that commenced well before Liverpool completed their rout.

Gary Neville remains one of the ring-leaders. Neville – seething, stewing next to Jamie Carragher as the ex-Liverpool defender’s cackling intensified with each goal at the Kop end – took aim on multiple occasions at Fernandes. Only some of it was justified: “You give the ball away at Anfield, you try to get it back. You don’t flap your arms around. I’ve had enough of him whinging. He whinges at everybody. He’s got to put a captain’s performance in there, and that wasn’t a captain’s performance.”

Roy Keane echoed Neville’s thoughts and, of course, the pair were renowned for not whinging at team-mates and maintaining an even temper when they captained United. That’s right, isn’t it?

READ: Man Utd’s most humiliating Premier League defeats include Liverpool, Balotelli and Keane evisceration

Perhaps Neville would have preferred Fernandes to have chosen violence. The current skipper tried but, typically for United, he missed when Stefan Bajcetic skipped past him down the right flank late on. Last season, when Hannibal Mejbri came off the bench at 4-0 down and set about making his mark on his opponents’ ankles, Neville was all for it. In fact, he was “proud of him”.

“Maybe he doesn’t like the idea of Liverpool passing around him,” suggested Neville. “I wish the others were the same.” One suspects Fernandes’ frustrations ran along similar lines. Remember, though: Kicking people – fine. ‘Flapping’ arms around and ‘whining’ – not cool.

Neville zeroed in on Fernandes while many of this team-mates sleepwalked through the humiliating final half-hour. So incensed was the Sky Sports co-commentator, he started seeing things.

“Bruno Fernandes is stood in the centre circle with his arms raised asking: ‘Why is it me not coming off?’. Honestly, I have to say some of his behaviour in the second half has been a disgrace.”

Here is Fernandes raising his arms, asking to come off…

Or, as the club have since had to confirm, he was asking for clarity on how Marcus Rashford’s exit affects his position. Which is a reasonable question since he’s been shifted across the frontline at regular intervals in recent weeks with not a hint of complaint.

That was some time after Fernandes went down claiming to be caught by Ibrahima Konate’s arm. “Touches the chest, he holds his face, that’s embarrassing from Bruno Fernandes,” said Neville at the time while everyone else piled in. Some want Fernandes banned. Which wilfully ignores the fact that he was caught in the face. Hardly a knockout blow, but Neville should at least acknowledge the contact.

So should everyone else. Here’s the chief Liverpool writer for the Liverpool Echo‘s take on that incident and Fernandes’ character in general.

I’ll wager Ma and Pa Fernandes are pretty damn proud. And we all know there are more ‘detestable little individuals’ on Premier League football pitches and in press boxes every week.  Of course, Ian Doyle is playing to his audience, but his tone is typical of much of the Fernandes coverage.

‘Bruno Fernandes’ tantrum bordered on insubordination’ read the headline in The Telegraph. Writers often use the defence that they don’t write the headlines but James Ducker doubled down on ‘Manchester United’s second-half super brat’, writing that Fernandes ‘threw his arms up in disgust as if to ask why it was not him who was coming off’.

Only, he didn’t. Fernandes was p*ss-boilingly petulant – nothing new there – but he did not defy any orders.

He did, however, put his hand on the assistant referee in the second half, which was asking for trouble. But the officials didn’t seem perturbed and Dermot Gallagher took little issue with it too. Even if others are baying for a ban and demanding that Fernandes be stripped of the United captaincy.

Perhaps he isn’t cut out for the rank of skipper in the modern game. He certainly did not lead by example with his actions on Sunday and he won’t look back on his performance with any personal pride, but the petulance illustrated his fury at what was unfolding around him while most of his team-mates were sucking their thumb in the foetal position.

Fernandes has shown more leadership over a longer period of time at Old Trafford and risen above the rank mediocrity of recent seasons more than any other Manchester United player. For at least a year after he signed, he was one of the few reasons to bother watching them. Even on his bad days, he can be relied upon to impact a game, and never does he shirk his responsibility. Fernandes has missed one match through injury or illness in three years since he arrived. His resilience is admirable.

The other candidates for the role currently occupied by Maguire, primarily Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez, hardly highlighted their own credentials at Anfield. But, mercifully for United, Ten Hag will react but he won’t rush to the kind of personal judgements and falsehoods being pedalled elsewhere.

  • Spurs: Paratici keeping tabs on Sesko

Spurs: Paratici keeping tabs on Sesko

Tottenham Hotspur sporting director Fabio Paratici may well have his eye on a new centre-forward addition, amid claims that the Lilywhites are closely monitoring Red Bull Salzburg sensation, Benjamin Sesko.

What’s the latest on Sesko to Spurs?

According to 90min, the north London outfit are among a handful of Premier League clubs – including Manchester United and West Ham United – who were present to see the 19-year-old in action in the weekend win over Rapid Wien, with Paratici and co clearly keeping a close watch on the striker’s progress.

The report suggests that despite the Slovenian having already agreed to join sister club RB Leipzig this summer on a £20m deal, there is a belief that the German outfit could sanction an immediate sale in order to recoup a hefty profit.

The 6 foot 5 powerhouse is evidently a player whom those at N17 have been tracking over an extended period of time, with the Daily Express reporting back in July that Antonio Conte’s side were one of the clubs who had the youngster on their radar.

Could Sesko partner Kane at Spurs?

This apparent interest comes amid the uncertainty surrounding Harry Kane‘s future at the club, with the record-breaking talisman earning admiring glances from those at Old Trafford with his existing contract set to expire in just 15 months’ time.

Despite that speculation, it is not out of the question that the academy graduate remains at Spurs for the long term, with recent reports claiming that the 29-year-old would potentially be ‘open‘ to signing an extension.

As such, there is the possibility that a strike partnership could be formed involving the England skipper and Sesko next season, with the towering youngster able to offer a different attacking profile to that of the playmaking poacher.

The Salzburg ace – who previously scored 22 goals in just 44 games for Austrian second division side FC Liefering – is arguably the “complete forward“, according to talent scout Jacek Kulig, with his physical stature and goalscoring prowess making him a real handful for any opposition defence.

The exciting “machine man” – as lauded by Kulig – already boasts a haul of nine goals and two assists in just 19 Bundesliga games so far this term, notably firing in a late, ten-minute hat-trick off the bench in front of the watching scouts on Sunday.

That ruthless performance illustrated just why the one-time Domzale ace has earned comparisons to Norwegian star, Erling Haaland, in the recent past, with the player himself even admitting: “My team-mates at the club tell me that Haaland and I are very similar, especially in terms of speed. Most of them even tell me that I’m better than him!”

To potentially have their own version of the Manchester City brute would represent a real coup as far as Tottenham are concerned, with it a truly mouthwatering prospect to imagine Sesko lining up with Kane.

Current boss Conte, in particular, would relish forming that partnership – provided the Italian remains in the job – with the former Inter Milan head coach potentially able to revert back to the 3-5-2 formation that brought him success in Italy, with Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez bagging 41 Serie A goals between them in the 2020/21 title-winning campaign.

There would be the ability for Kane – who has been hailed as “one of the best passers in world football” by Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher – to drop deep and feed the teenager with incisive, quality service, with the latter gem able to use his lightning speed to exploit any potential space in behind.

That combination could prove rather deadly indeed…

  • 2023 Football Trends to Follow

    2023 Football Trends to Follow

No one can deny the fact that football’s popularity grows with every passing day. The possibility to follow and bet on the sport online has contributed to the sport’s popularity even more.

As there is no exact science to betting, you’ll find countless betting guides, strategies, and trends to follow.

Some may think that trends are unimportant and can’t help you during the decision-making process. But first, you should understand what a trend is.

If you look through the dictionary, there will be different explanations, but none of them will be appropriate for sports betting trends. To cut it short, trends are directions of sports betting in which something develops and changes. So many people follow this general course due to its popularity.

Now, we have a general idea of what a trend is, but what does it need to become a trend? There are several qualifications a trend must meet.

    1. First, it must be around for a long time; to say, it must pass the test of time. The longer it is effective, the more validity it has.
    2. The group of people that use the trend. It should be prominent and influential. This is logical, as you can’t consider it a trend if only 100 people follow it. There must be a good sample size of data to support it.

Trends can change, and new trends can immerse throughout time. So finding trends is all about research.

Speaking of specifically football trends, we have taken out the two most prominent types: situational and betting trends. So let’s get more details on each one.

    Betting Trends

These trend types are based on the money the fans wager with different sportsbooks. Even if these trends don’t give us direct info about the result of the game, they can still be a good source of information. Betting trends help us to find answers to two questions: what are the significant majority betting on? And where is the smart money coming from?

These two questions are interconnected. If you know what the majority of fans are betting on, then you can follow the opposite betting trend. There is a logic in this trend. Going against the public is a good strategy for betting; everyone follows a mainstream; if you back the opposite and win, the result can be really rewarding. Also, as a bettor, understand where the smart money is going. This is when the smart/professional bettors change trends and patterns. Pay close attention; sometimes, it’s hard to spot, but if you see odds changing from +6.5 to 6, then be sure the pro bettors are changing the lines. It’s a good idea to follow them.

You can check the pre-match betting section on VBET UK for more insights into the odds selection.

    Situational Trends

As the name implies, situation trends are about conditions. Therefore, you need to do in-depth research, find out the previous results, and connect them to certain situations, thus creating patterns that later turn into trends. This information will help you to predict how the teams will perform in certain conditions.

To give you an idea, you may want to look at information like home records against stronger/weaker teams, record following loss/win, etc.

Example of Simple Trends to Check Out in 2023

We looked at what trends are, how to understand trends, and what to look for. Now let’s look at some examples of simple trends to give you a better idea.

    Coaching Trends

Many fans care only about the team and players in general, forgetting about other important people like coaches who directly influence the team’s performance.

Knowing the coach’s attitude is essential and can change the game. Research how the coach behaves in specific scenarios, such as games against strong teams, during high-profile games, and during pre-season. That may seem trivial, but it can be crucial for the players.

    First Half Scoring Trends

Football is a dynamic sport, and teams try to show dominance from the very beginning. That’s where this trend came from. This trend is based on how the team plays in the first part of the game. If they score more goals in the first half, the chance of winning is higher. And this makes sense because if the team couldn’t settle their position from the beginning, later on, it’ll be harder to get back.

    Home Underdog Trends

If the team at home is considered an underdog, the crowd will blindly back the popular team. But do your homework, and if the team has a record of winning at home, then this trend can be profitable.

    Line Changes

This is closely connected to where the smart money is coming from. If the odds are changing drastically, the smart money is coming from a respected source, and you should consider the prof bettors’ opinion.

    Bye Week Trends

Bye week is the period in the middle of the season when the team is not playing. This trend deals with how the players perform after the bye week season. After a week of rest, they are back with full power, and if the statistics show that the teams usually perform well after the bye week season, then follow this trend.

With all the info at hand, rest assured that you are ready to get into football trends and get the most out of it.

  • The players who are suspended in the Champions League this week

The players who are suspended in the Champions League this week

The first legs served as a mere teaser for what’s about to follow. For many, this is when the Champions League knockout stages truly begin.

The round of 16 second legs are upon us, with this week’s selection of fixtures poised to produce the tension and drama we commonly associate with mammoth European ties. Well, apart from Benfica vs Club Brugge which we assume is pretty much a done deal.

Nevertheless, just one goal currently separates the two sides in each of the other three ties. It’s very much all to play for in the Champions League.

However, UEFA’s suspension rules mean several players will be missing out this week. Yellow card accumulation warrants a one-game ban, and here are those that will be absent from the upcoming second legs as a result.

Each team will have one player missing through suspension on Tuesday night. Mason Mount misses out for Chelsea after he picked up his third yellow card of the campaign in the reverse fixture, while Julian Ryerson has to sit out for the away side.

Mount was likely to miss the second leg through injury anyway.

Benfica eased to a 2-0 triumph in the first leg and they’re expected to coast into the last eight on Tuesday night. Roger Schmidt has no players suspended for Club Brugge’s visit.

Four players have already served one-game suspensions due to yellow card accumulation this season for the Belgian outfit, but Scott Parker has a full cohort of players to select from on Tuesday.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg served his one-game suspension in Milan, but Tottenham will be without Eric Dier on Wednesday night after the defender picked up a harsh booking in the first leg.

Clement Lenglet will replace the Englishman at the heart of Antonio Conte’s defence.

The visitors have no players missing through suspension.

Benjamin Pavard‘s late dismissal in Paris means he’ll miss the return leg on Wednesday, while the visitors have no players suspended. Marco Verratti and Neymar have already served one-game suspensions for yellow card accumulation.

  • The Best Of Records Mohamed Salah Holds For Club And Country

The Best Of Records Mohamed Salah Holds For Club And Country

Mohamed Salah is a Liverpool legend and there’s no denying that. Ever since his debut in 2017, the Egyptian King has set records one after another.

From scoring over 150 goals for Liverpool in all competitions to winning Liverpool’s maiden Premier League title and a Champions League, Salah has come a long way. FootTheBall take a look at Salah’s best records for both Liverpool and Egypt.

Liverpool’s record goalscorer in the Premier League

The Egypt international scored his 128th and 129th top-flight goals for the Reds against Manchester United in a special match where the Red Devils were thrashed 7-0, taking him to the summit as the club’s most prolific player in the division.

Salah moved ahead of Robbie Fowler, who plundered 128 Premier League goals across his two spells at Anfield, with Steven Gerrard (120) in third place. Michael Owen remains in fourth position on the list having netted 118 times in the league, while Sadio Mane’s tally of 90 sits him fifth.

Most goals in a Premier League campaign

Salah netted 32 league goals in 2017-18, beating Cristiano Ronaldo’s record for most goals in a 38-game Premier League season. Salah’s 32 goals in 38 games came with only one hattrick against Watford. Scoring in 24 games out of 38 – another record; the 29-year-old formed a formidable attacking trio alongside Sadio Mane and Roberto Firminho.

    Most consecutive opening-day goals

After scoring against Norwich City in August 2021, he became the first player to score on the opening day of five consecutive Premier League seasons. He is the only player in the Premier League era to score in six consecutive opening-day fixtures. In other words, Salah has scored for Klopp’s side in every single opening game since he joined in the 2017/18 season.

Only opposition player to score a hattrick at Old Trafford

Although it was more about Manchester United’s helplessness rather than Liverpool’s brilliance, Mohamed Salah stole the show at Old Trafford

In October 2021, the forward became the first opposition player to score a Premier League hat-trick against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Salah scored the hattrick in just 12-minute intervals spread out between the two halves.

Highest scoring African player in Premier League

Salah has become the highest-scoring African player in Premier League history, overtaking Chelsea legend Didier Drogba in the process.

Not only did he claim the accolade in the 5-0 beating of his side’s arch-rivals Manchester United, but he did it in style. Scoring a hattrick, Salah took his active tally to 107, compared to 104 of the previous record holder Didier Drogba. 105 of those came while playing for Liverpool, and the rest two were from his initial tenure at Chelsea.

While the 2022/23 season has seen a drop in form compared to the standards set by him, there is no doubt that Mohamed Salah is still among the best in the world.

Who is Jon Jones’ Girlfriend? Is He Still Engaged To Jessie Moses?

In the aftermath of the fight, fans want to know a bit more about ‘Bones’ personal life. For example, who is Jon Jones girlfriend? Here is everything you need to know about the 35-year-old’s love life.

    Who Is Jon Jones’ Girlfriend?

Jon Jones put on a clinical performance as he submitted Ciryl Gane in the very first round of their main event at UFC 285 last weekend. The fight was one of the most hotly-anticipated fights of the year and sold-out the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Las Vegas, Nevada. Although fans were interested in the actual fight, they are also curious as to who the women Jones was celebrating with in the aftermath was. That is his fiancée – Jessie Moses.

Jessie Moses and Jon Jones, who were high school sweethearts, have three children together: Leah, Carmen, and Olivia. They started dating in 2005 but split up soon after. Jones apparently started dating someone else after they split up, and she became pregnant with his first daughter in 2008 as a result. Jones and Moses eventually reconciled.

They had been betrothed for over a decade but had never married. Moses and their daughters resided in upstate New York, and Jones was said to divide his time between there and Albuquerque. However, it seems that Jessie Moses split up with the former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion about a year ago following his most recent arrest.

Jones took to Twitter shortly after and said, “My fiancée left me about two months ago, today she finalized that she won’t be coming back.”

However, UFC fans were somewhat surprised to see that Moses was indeed in attendance at UFC 285. Jones mentioned his fiancée in his post-fight interview, as well as sharing a kiss with her before and after the fight. So, it seems they aren’t separated after all. Jon Jones and Jessie Moses are in fact together and just as in love as they ever have been!

Jessie Moses has been present at several of Jones’ UFC fights throughout his career. The 35-year-old has been fighting in the UFC since 2008 so his fiancée will have certainly been in attendance on more than one occasion in the past. It came as a surprise to see Moses in attendance on Saturday night, but this means that they are back together and have sorted out the issues they may have had in the past.

  • Which players received an NFL franchise tag for the 2023 season?

Which players received an NFL franchise tag for the 2023 season?

One of the most intriguing parts of the NFL off-season is seeing which team choose to use the franchise tag on which player, and which type of tag they use.

The franchise tag is a tool for keeping the best players that you currently have on your team, whilst still allowing them to continue contract negotiations.

The franchise tag is a one-year deal and all 32 teams have the option of tagging one player per year during free agency.

This can be done both exclusively and non-exclusively. They are two of the types of franchise tag, while the other is a transition tag.

For this year, the established period for franchising players was between February 21 and March 7, ahead of the new league year that begins on March 15.

In 2022, eight players received a franchise tag, but this season it is only four players. They are outlined below.

    Tony Pollard (Dallas Cowboys)

Dallas Cowboys running back Tony Pollard is estimated to earn a salary of 10.09 million dollars, having been franchised.

Pollard alternated with Zeke Elliott last season, but from the backup spot he had much better numbers, showed great explosiveness and is also much cheaper, even with the franchise tag.

Negotiations for a long-term contract are expected to continue with the label, before the deadline of July 15.

    Josh Jacobs (Las Vegas Raiders)

Las Vegas Raiders running back Josh Jacobs has also been given a franchise tag this off-season.

He will receive the same salary as Pollard if he does not go on to sign a multi-year contract in the near future.

    Evan Engram (Jacksonville Jaguars)

Evan Engram, tight end for the Jacksonville Jaguars, received a tag for 11.345m dollars, having set personal bests in receptions (73) and receiving yards (766) in his first season with the Jaguars.

He has 335 receptions for 3,594 yards and 20 career touchdowns. Engram wants a multi-year deal on a team, while the Jaguars want to keep him for the right price.

    Daron Payne (Washington Commanders)

  • Arsenal must unleash Jakub Kiwior

    Arsenal must unleash Jakub Kiwior

Arsenal’s stunning 3-2 comeback victory over AFC Bournemouth last weekend could very well be the catalyst that spearheads them to claiming Premier League glory at the end of the season.

The fight and resilience shown at the Emirates was the sign of champions and Mikel Arteta now finds his side five points clear of Manchester City.

Although the victory produced boisterous scenes at the Emirates, once the adrenaline had died down slightly, the Spaniard knows that his side have got to do better, especially defensively.

William Saliba has averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.8 over his five previous Premier League appearances and was the man to lose Philip Billing for that opening goal against the Cherries after just nine seconds.

The club have conceded seven goals in that aforementioned five-game period and perhaps a bold change in defence is required ahead of the Europa League tie against Sporting CP this Thursday.

Arteta must rotate his side to prevent any staleness from setting in and it could be the ideal opportunity to give Jakub Kiwior his debut.

Will Jakub Kiwior start against Sporting in the Europa League?

The £58k-per-week ace was signed in January from Serie A side Spezia in a £20m deal in order to add some depth to the side ahead of a busy second half of the season, however, he has yet to play for the club.

He was in excellent form for Spezia during the first half of the campaign, making 1.4 interceptions, 1.3 tackles, and four clearances per game, while winning over half of his total duels and he ranked as the club’s seventh-best player in Serie A.

There is no doubting his credentials at the highest level, as the 23-year-old played in all four of Poland’s World Cup games in Qatar, ranking as the squad’s tenth-best player at the tournament as they exited to France in the last 16.

These performances of late have garnered plenty of praise, with talent scout Jacek Kulig dubbing him a “very positive surprise” while Fabrizio Romano stated that he was “untouchable” with those comments just proving that Arsenal have a very bright talent on their hands.

With league glory the priority for Arteta, a Europa League run is very much a bonus and this could give him the chance to play about with his squad, giving others a chance to impress.

Indeed, on Kiwior’s first outing for the Poland national team, he then immediately became a key cog in their backline, with sports journalist Michal Kruczkowski telling The Athletic “from his debut, he became the main player in the Poland defence.”

Therefore, Saliba and co better watch out. The ‘surprise’ defender could well become Arsenal’s mainstay very soon too.

  • Man Utd legends urges Ten Hag to take drastic action over ’embarrassing’ Bruno

Man Utd legends urges Ten Hag to take drastic action over ’embarrassing’ Bruno

Former Manchester United full-back Patrice Evra has urged Erik ten Hag to take drastic action over Bruno Fernandes if the Red Devils skipper doesn’t break his bad “habit”.

Fernandes has come in for plenty of criticism in the wake of United’s 7-0 mauling at Liverpool and Evra reckons Ten Hag needs to nip his bad behaviour and attitude in the bud.

The former United left-back says the Dutch boss should consider dropping the United captain.

“Honestly, it was embarrassing. I don’t want to just pick Bruno, I love Bruno as a player, but his body language, this is not the first game it was like that. And I see him arguing with players sometimes,” he told Vibe with Five.

“He has this thing and he needs to get rid of that. Paul Pogba used to have this also at Juventus, and Allegri benched him because of that. Sometimes it’s a habit, sometimes it’s not like Bruno is a bad person or whatever, it’s just a habit.

“I feel like no manager has taught him you can’t do that. Like Rio can tell you, I remember when Nani wasn’t crossing the ball to Wayne [Rooney], you remember Wayne the way he was shouting.

“That’s when after the fans start hating Nani a little bit. So me, when I see this body language, as a manager, those players won’t play in my team. No matter if they are good, because this is disrespectful, they give up.”

Red Devils legend Gary Neville has also took issue with the 28-year-old for his antics on Sunday.

“You can have a bad game, this place can do that to you sometimes, we’ve seen it over history, but there were signs in that second half and things that I saw in that second half which were a disgrace,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“I must start with Bruno Fernandes because I’ve had enough of him throwing his arms around at his teammates. I’ve had enough of him not running back. He whinges at everybody. Going down – he got pushed down in his chest and goes down holding his face.

“He’s got to put in a captain’s performance out there, that wasn’t a captain’s performance by a Manchester United player. Erik ten Hag will deal with them very strongly in the next 24, 48 hours.

“He’s done that this season a few times, and I hope that normal service will have resumed by the end of next week, but they’ve got to own that performance today and they’ve got to own that result because they’ve lost seven nil at Anfield in a Manchester United shirt – it is a disgrace.”
