Twitter reactions: Clinical Sri Lanka thrash New Zealand in the 3rd ODI to avoid a series whitewash

The third and final encounter of the ODI series between New Zealand and Sri Lanka ended with the Islanders winning the match by 140 runs. A solid display from the visitors with the bat and a remarkable bowling show from Eshan Malinga, Asitha Fernando and Maheesh Theekshana sealed the win for Sri Lanka. The trio took 3 wickets each proved too much for the home side in the end and stopped their run chase at just 150 runs in 29.4 overs.

The only flicker of hope for the Blackcaps was Mark Chapman. However, the dynamic opener couldn’t do much amidst little support from other New Zealand batters and failed to turn the tides for the Blackcaps. However, the win is only a constellation prize for Sri Lanka as the home side had already clinched a win in the ODI series by winning the first two matches.

A determined effort from Sri Lanka with the bat

Sri Lanka appeared confident ever since the beginning of the match. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first. The decision proved worthy as Pathum Nissanka and top-order batter Kusal Mendis gave Sri Lanka a solid start. Kamindu Mendis and Janith Liyange were next to stabilize the Sri Lankan innings. A dedicated knock from these Sri Lankan batters helped Sri Lanka put 290 runs on board in 50 overs.

Matt Henry starred for the New Zealand bowling unit. The ace Blackcaps pacer took 4 wickets for his team and achieved a historic milestone by completing 150 wickets in his ODI career.

A dreadful display from New Zealand batters

In response, the New Zealand batters put-up a horror show with the bat. It started with openers Will Young and Rachin Ravindra getting dismissed early, leaving the Blackcaps two wickets down on just 4 runs. The entire New Zealand middle order crashed completely adding more concern for the Blackcaps.

The New Zealand lower order tried to support Chapman who was the only traditional batter withstanding the incoming onslaught from the Sri Lankan pace attack. Chapman’s 81-run knock off 81 balls made him a knight in shining armour of the already de-railed New Zealand innings. However, even Chapman couldn’t save the home side from a historic humiliation as was the last batter to be dismissed by Sri Lankan pacers. This is the second largest margin of victory for Sri Lanka against New Zealand in the ODI format, the largest being a 189-run win in Auckland in 2007.

AUS vs WI: Matthew Short ruled out of the 3rd ODI; replacement announced

In a significant setback for Australia, Matthew Short has been ruled out of the third and final One-Day International against West Indies, scheduled to be played in Canberra on Tuesday (February 6).

    Injury to Matthew Short

This decision stems from a low-grade hamstring injury that Short sustained while batting in the second ODI, which Australia convincingly won by 83 runs, securing an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series. Despite contributing with 41 runs, Short did not take the field during the second innings due to the injury.

Cricket Australia names the replacement for the 3rd ODI against the West Indies

In response to this development, Cricket Australia (CA) has made a strategic move by calling up Queensland batter Ben McDermott as Short’s replacement. McDermott, last seen in action during Australia’s tour of Pakistan in 2022, where he recorded his only century in the ODI format, now steps in as the last resort for the Men in Yellow, with no spare batters left in the squad after Travis Head‘s rest. McDermott arrives with recent form, having played an exceptional knock of 146* runs for Queensland against Tasmania in a Sheffield Shield clash. The star batter will aim to carry this momentum into the third ODI against West Indies.

    Another notable change

In addition to that, star pacer Josh Hazlewood will also be absent in the third ODI against West Indies. Hazlewood is set to remain in Sydney before joining the T20I squad for the upcoming games against the Windies. With the ODI series already secured after winning the first two games, Australia will strive for a comprehensive performance to achieve a clean sweep against the visitors.

WATCH: Sai Sudharsan’s gravity-defying catch of Heinrich Klaasen steals the show in series decider against South Africa

In a high-stakes ODI series decider between South Africa and India at Boland Park in Paarl on Thursday (December 21), Sai Sudharsan stole the limelight with a jaw-dropping catch that marked the end of Heinrich Klaasen‘s innings.

Sai Sudharsan’s super acrobatic catch: Turning the tide in India’s favour

The critical moment unfolded in the second ball of the 33rd over during South Africa’s run chase. Avesh Khan delivered a full ball just outside off, extracting extra bounce that caught Klaasen off guard, resulting in a pop-up off the bat. Sudharsan’s lightning-fast reflexes came into play as he sprinted forward and executed a superb dive, managing to get his fingertips under the dipping ball. The third umpire’s confirmation that the fingers were indeed underneath the ball solidified Sudharsan’s super acrobatic catch.

This catch played a crucial role in KL Rahul‘s men securing a 2-1 series win at Proteas’ home, defeating the Aiden Markram-led outfit by a margin of 78 runs. Staring down the defeat at one point, the bowlers made a stunning comeback to bowl the hosts out for 218 in their chase of 297.

    Here’s the video:

Sanju Samson’s heroic century lifts India

In the first ODI against South Africa, India faced a daunting task after being put into bat. Markram’s decision to bowl first seemed justified until Sanju Samson stepped up to the plate. Samson’s magnificent maiden ODI century, comprising 108 runs studded with six fours and three sixes, became the centerpiece of India’s innings. Supported by Tilak Varma‘s resilient 52, Samson played a pivotal role in stabilizing the innings after the early loss of wickets.

Rinku Singh and Washington Sundar propel India to 296/8

With a solid foundation laid by Samson and Varma, the duo of Rinku Singh (38) and Washington Sundar (14) powered India to a competitive 296/8 in 50 overs. Despite the Proteas’ bowling efforts, including Beuran Hendricks‘ 3/63 and Nandre Burger‘s two wickets, Singh and Sundar’s contributions ensured India set a challenging target.

South Africa’ response and India’s bowling brilliance

In pursuit of India’s target, Tony de Zorzi‘s 81 and Markram’s 36 provided hope for South Africa. However, Sundar and Khan emerged as the game-changers, each securing two crucial wickets that derailed the Proteas’ progress. Arshdeep Singh‘s exceptional bowling performance, claiming 4/30 in 9 overs, ultimately sealed the deal for India.

  • IND vs AUS 2023: Australia’s best playing XI for the 3rd ODI against India

IND vs AUS 2023: Australia’s best playing XI for the 3rd ODI against India

The third ODI between India and Australia is scheduled to take place on Wednesday at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot.

The Men in Blue have been dominant in the series, showcasing their skills with both batting and bowling, which has enabled them to secure a 2-0 lead in the three-game ODI series. Meanwhile, Australia have faced a challenging period, as they suffered five consecutive ODI losses, including three during their tour of South Africa and two in India. The visitors will be eager to break this losing streak when they face India in the final fixture on September 27.

Australia’s best XI for the 3rd ODI against India

    • David Warner: Warner has displayed flashes of his vintage form in the first two matches, registering back-to-back half-centuries. Nevertheless, he might be disappointed for not capitalizing on these promising starts to reach a significant milestone. As the third ODI approaches, Warner will be determined to shift the momentum in his favour and aim for a more substantial contribution
    • Mitchell Marsh: Recognized as the most aggressive player in the Australian side, Marsh brings a dynamic presence to  the team. While he had a faltering start in this series, going for a duck in the first game and missing the second, his potential to explode with the bat remains undiminished. Australia will rely on his power-hitting skills when he opens alongside Warner.
    • Steve Smith: Australia’s batting stalwart, Smith, is celebrated for his adaptability and the ability to dismantle any bowling attack with gritty determination. Despite a subdued series, tallying just 43 runs in the opening fixture and suffering a duck in the second, Smith’s unparalleled experience and class make him a key figure in Australia’s batting lineup.
    • Marnus Labuschagne: Labuschagne, often the man to rescue Australia in challenging situations across formats, has showcased his mettle with the bat in this series. While his dismissals have been unfortunate, he has exhibited solidity at the crease. As a promising young talent, he seeks to rectify his approach against off-spinners and continue contributing significantly.

    • Marcus Stoinis: Positioned at number 5, Stoinis infuses an attacking flair into the batting lineup. He demonstrated his capabilities with a brisk 29 in the Mohali ODI, showcasing his ability to accelerate the scoring. With a penchant for playing aggressive shots, Stoinis is poised to make a substantial impact in the forthcoming game.
    • Glenn Maxwell: This year hasn’t been favorable for Maxwell in the Australian yellow jersey due to injuries. However, his inclusion in the ODI World Cup 2023 squad underscores his extensive experience in Indian conditions. Maxwell’s explosive all-round abilities make him a potential match-winner, both with the bat and ball, and Australia are eager to harness his unique talents.
    • Alex Carey: Carey was absent from the lineup in the first match, and in the second, he contributed just 14 runs. Nevertheless, he displayed exceptional wicketkeeping skills in the same game. With competition from Josh Inglis, Carey faces additional pressure to make a strong impression on the team management and selectors. The highly talented batter will be determined to showcase his true abilities before the upcoming global showpiece event.
    • Pat Cummins: Serving as the captain of the Australian side, Cummins exhibits no fear when confronting challenges. Although his transition from red-ball success to ODIs has been challenging, he remains resolute in contributing to the team’s success with the ball. His leadership on and off the field will be crucial.
    • Mitchell Starc: As the seasoned campaigner of World Cup campaigns, Starc has grappled with fitness concerns recently. Nonetheless, his experience and ability to deliver in high-pressure situations make him an invaluable asset. Starc harbors hope of participating in the last game to gain valuable match practice ahead of the marquee event.
    • Josh Hazlewood: Holding the second spot in ICC’s ODI bowler rankings, Hazlewood is revered for his consistency and disciplined bowling approach. His knack for maintaining impeccable line and length makes him a crucial asset for Australia. His ability to generate movement and breakthroughs will be pivotal.
    • Adam Zampa: Zampa emerges as Australia’s trump card with his knack for dismissing key opponents. While he has succeeded in picking up wickets in the series, his economy rate in both fixtures has raised eyebrows. Zampa, with his smart thinking and variations, aims to rectify these concerns in the upcoming fixture, potentially turning the tide in Australia’s favour.

These eleven players, each with their unique strengths and roles, are poised to play pivotal roles in their pursuit of victory and building essential momentum heading into the quadrennial event.

The Rohit Sharma-led team India completed a series sweep (3-0) as they emerged victorious in the third and final ODI against New Zealand by 90 runs. The two sides crossed swords at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore on Tuesday, January 24.

Opting to field first, Tom Latham and co. were swiftly put on the backfoot as the Indian openers fired in tandem to help India post a mammoth total on the scoreboard. Skipper Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill produced yet another sensational performance as the two stitched a 212-run partnership which is also the highest by an opening pair against New Zealand in ODIs.

Interestingly, the Indian skipper slammed his second-fastest century in just 83 deliveries which also marked his 30th ton in ODIs overall. Only Virat Kohli and India great Sachin Tendulkar have more tons than Rohit in the 50-over format with 46 and 49 centuries, respectively.

Following the dismissals of Rohit (101 runs) and Gill (112 runs), the middle order failed to maintain the momentum and the team lost wickets at regular intervals. However, star all-rounder Hardik Pandya’s 54 off 38 balls steered the side to attain a mammoth 385 runs in their stipulated 50 overs.

Devon Conway fires all guns blazing in massive run chase

In response to the score, the Kiwis required some big performances from their batting unit to help their case. However, the visitors lost opener Finn Allen on the second ball of the contest as Hardik sent him packing.

Despite the early fall of wicket, Devon Conway turned out to be the pillar in their run chase as the batter scored a blistering knock and nearly revived the innings. Conway amassed 138 runs off 100 deliveries which included eight maximums and 12 boundaries before getting dismissed by speedster Umran Malik. Shardul Thakur returned with bowling figures of 3/45 in his six overs.

As the bowling unit kept mounting the pressure by picking up the wickets swiftly, the Kiwis began to lose confidence. Eventually the visitors succumbed under pressure and handed India the win by 90 runs and thereby the series 3-0.
