Recently, Pakistan all-rounder Aamer Jamal found himself at the center of a storm after being fined a staggering PKR 1.4 million by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).     The incident: A political statement on the field

    Jamal, a talented all-rounder, was fined during Pakistan’s home Test series against England in October 2024. The controversy arose when Jamal was spotted wearing a cap with “804” written on it during an interview. This seemingly innocuous number carried significant political connotations—it referred to the prisoner identification number of Imran Khan, Pakistan’s former Prime Minister and cricket legend, who is currently incarcerated in Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.

    Supporters of Imran have often used “804” as a symbol of solidarity, chanting slogans such as “Tera Yaar, Mera Yaar Qaidi Number 804” (Your friend, my friend, prisoner number 804). By displaying this number on his cap, Jamal appeared to express his support for Imran, a move that did not sit well with the PCB.

    PCB’s stance: Politics has no place in cricket

    The PCB has long maintained that cricket should remain apolitical. In response to Jamal’s actions, the board imposed a hefty fine of PKR 1.4 million—the largest among recent disciplinary measures against Pakistani players. The PCB justified its decision by stating that political expressions on the field violate its code of conduct and undermine the sport’s integrity.

    This fine was part of a broader crackdown on disciplinary breaches by Pakistani cricketers. Between the England series and the South Africa tour, the PCB imposed fines totaling PKR 3.3 million for various infractions, including curfew violations and tardiness. However, Jamal’s case stood out due to its political undertones.

    Repercussions for Aamer Jamal

    The consequences for Jamal extended beyond financial penalties. Reports suggest that his political expression may have influenced his exclusion from Pakistan’s squad for the recently ended ICC Champions Trophy 2025.     Other disciplinary actions: A string of fines

    Jamal was not the only player penalized during this period. Several other cricketers faced fines for breaching team protocols. Salman Ali Agha, Saim Ayub, and Abdullah Shafique were fined PKR 500,000 each for returning late to their hotel during Pakistan’s white-ball tour of Australia. Whereas, Sufiyan Muqeem, Abbas Afridi, and Usman Khan were fined $200 each for curfew violations during the South Africa series. These incidents highlight growing concerns about discipline within Pakistan’s cricket team, especially following their disappointing early exit from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

    Jamal’s fine has reignited debates about whether athletes should be allowed to express political views while representing their country. Supporters argue that players are entitled to freedom of expression, especially when addressing issues, they deeply care about. Critics, however, contend that such actions can polarize fans and distract from the game.

    On Friday, November 29, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) made last-minute changes to the T20I squad of the Pakistan National Cricket Team for the upcoming series against the Zimbabwe National Cricket Team.

    Pakistan are currently on a tour to Zimbabwe for a white-ball series. The series consists of three ODI matches and three T20I matches.

    Pakistan won the ODI series 2-1 against Zimbabwe

    The Men In Green won the recently concluded three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe by the margin of 2-1. They started off the series with a shock 80-run loss in Bulawayo but made a good comeback to clinch the series as they won the next two matches by 10 wickets and 99 runs.

    The 22-year-old top-order batsman Saim Ayub emerged as one of the top performers in the ODI series and he also bagged a Player of the Series award.

    In the series opener, he scored just 11 runs and registered bowling figures of 0/12. However, in the second match, he blasted an unbeaten 113 runs and bagged one wicket for 16 runs.

    Also, in the series decider, he contributed 31 runs with the bat, and with the ball, he picked up two wickets for 29 runs. Speaking after winning the Player of the Series award, Saim Ayub said that he just stays in the present and tries to enjoy every game he plays. He said:

    “It was similar to the last game, the pitch was a bit slower today. We just see the ball and react, sometimes it goes outside the boundary, sometimes it goes for a catch. We just trust the process and enjoy, everything is not in our control. We try to stay in the present and enjoy each other’s company.”

    Saim Ayub, Aamer Jamal, and Abrar Ahmed added to the Pakistan T20I squad

    Saim Ayub’s brilliant performance in the ODI series impressed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) selection committee as they included him in the squad for the series against Zimbabwe.

    Along with Ayub, Aamer Jamal, and Abrar Ahmed have been included in the Pakistan T20I squad for the three-match series against Zimbabwe.

    The T20I matches between Pakistan and Zimbabwe will be played on December 1, 3 and 5. Salman Ali Agha will be captaining the team in the absence of the wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan, who has been rested.

    Speaking after the ODI series win over Zimbabwe, Mohammad Rizwan said that he was proud of the way his team bounced back from defeat.

    “It is a proud feeling. We lost the first match and the expectation from the nation is very high. But we had the confidence to bounce back. We knew we would face some pressure here, away is always difficult in terms of conditions.”

    Pakistan National Cricket Team player Aamer Jamal talked about the toughest batter to bowl in Pakistan. What caught the attention of many was he didn’t name Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, who are rated as the best batters in the country. 

    Aamer Jamal went on to name Azam Khan as the toughest batter in Pakistan. He cited that the batter is a very hard hitter and whenever he has played against him, the keeper-batter has always hit him out of the park. 

    Azam Khan has been one of the most talented batters in Pakistan cricket. The keeper-batter has been touted as one of the best power hitters in league cricket as he has been playing franchise cricket all over the world and has slammed truckloads of runs. 

    Azam Khan has been a beast in T20 cricket as in the 166 games he has slammed 3242 runs at a strike rate of around 150. Apart from this he also has slammed one century and 16 centuries in the games that he has played. 

    Meanwhile, Aamer Jamal stated that he doesn’t want to bowl to Azam Khan because the batter hits the ball very hard. He highlighted that in white ball cricket, bowlers have limited options and it’s difficult to bowl to keeper-batter. 

    He also revealed how he last time told Azam Khan to not hit him straight because he could get hit in the face because of the speed of his shot. Speaking in a video posted on the YouTube channel of Cricwick, he explained: 

    “In Pakistan, I don’t want to bowl to Azam (Khan). The reason was that in a white ball, you have only two or three options. There are not many options. You can either bowl Yorker, Slow, or Bouncer. 

    “Whenever I bowled to Azam, he has hit me very badly. He hit me very fast. When I bowled to him in the last match, I told him not to hit straight because I couldn’t have time to blink.”

    Azam Khan failed to live up to expectations in international cricket. The keeper-batter has failed to get going for the Pakistan team and has faced a lot of criticism for his performances. 

    Aamer Jamal talked about the criticism Azam Khan is facing, saying that the keeper-batter is under pressure because he is unable to get started. Jamal suggested that the keeper-batter needs to be given confidence. He said: 

    “The standards of international and league cricket are very different. Your confidence in the league is different when you go to the international league. Although you have performed well, when the next team comes against you, they have worked on you and told you not to play here and there and that this is his strong zone. You have to struggle for that. You have to make your shot selection different when you go to the international league.

    “I think Azam is under pressure because he didn’t have a good start. Whether it was his debut or comeback. Otherwise being a player, I will never criticize Azam. I think if you want to develop a player, the process will be that if you give him a start in the conditions that he has performed, his confidence level builds and boosts and he will give you performances in any condition,” he concluded.
