BBL 12 – WATCH: Controversy erupts as Umpire signals six runs twice for balls hitting the stadium roof

After Adam Zampa‘s Mankad attempt and Sydney Thunder getting all out for just 15, the Big Bash League season 12 has made it to the headlines for yet another shocking incident.

During the match between city rivals Melbourne Renegades and Melbourne Stars, on Friday, a bizarre incident took place as the ball hit the stadium roof twice, and the batters went on to get six runs following the collision.

In the second innings, Stars’ wicketkeeper Joe Clark mishit a delivery by Renegades pacer Will Sutherland which went up high in the air and ended up striking the roof of the Dockland stadium. Further, the ball landed in the third-yard circle, and the on-field umpire declared it a six.

    Here’s the video:

A similar incident also took place in the 13th over when all-rounder Beau Webster smashed Tom Rogers‘ delivery to the ceiling. And as before, six runs were added.

Here’s the video of the 2nd incident:

Notably, Dockland Stadium is the only cricket stadium in the world with an indoor roof.

Talking about the match, Stars opted to field first and restricted Renegades to 162/7. Sam Harper‘s 51 (36) and Jonathan Wells‘ 44 (24) helped their team to put a fighting total on the board.

In reply, Stars started well as they were 88/1 in 8.5 overs, but eventually fell six runs short of the set target. Clarke, the talk of the town for his controversial six, scored a 37-ball 59 for his team.

Fans on social media were against the umpire’s decision and were convinced that it should have been a dead ball. However, according to the tournament’s rule book, the match officials were right.

The previous rules got changed in BBL|02 after Renegades skipper Aaron Finch smashed the white leather into the roof, and soon it was declared a dead ball.

During Friday’s game, Finch spoke to the commentators about the recent incidents, where he criticised the call made by the on-field umpire.

“That would have been two simple catches tonight. They were both straight up. That would have been out,” said mic’d up Finch.

In the absence of regular skipper Glenn Maxwell, the Melbourne Stars have appointed Adam Zampa as their new skipper for the upcoming Big Bash League. The leg-spinner joined Stars during the fifth edition of the tournament and has represented them ever since.

Meanwhile, Maxwell who broke his leg during a birthday party last month, has been ruled out from the entire season. Adam Zampa replaced the all-rounder and mentioned in an official statement that the team will be giving their everything in order to win their maiden Big Bash title. Zampa also revealed that he is gunning to play alongside Trent Boult and Luke Wood this season.

“It’s an honour to lead the Melbourne Stars in Glenn’s absence and I look forward to helping get the best out of this group. Our Stars journey won’t be complete without a BBL title and we’re throwing everything into this season to achieve that,” said the newly appointed captain of Stars.

“I’m so excited to be playing alongside Trent Boult and Luke Wood for the first time along with Joe Clarke again this year. With the help of Marcus as vice-captain, I can’t wait to lead this group and we want to see as many of our fans at the MCG as possible on Friday 16th December at the MCG,” the spinner added.

Jason Sangha to replace Usman Khawaja as Sydney Thunder skipper

The 23-year-old Jason Sangha has been appointed as the new skipper of Sydney Thunder. Meanwhile, Khawaja, who led the side in the previous season, has left the franchise ahead of the new season and will be leading Brisbane Heat in the next edition.

The youngster was also seen leading the Thunder’s side when Usman Khawaja missed three games last season. With David Warner’s availability as a captain still under consideration, Sangha has been given the full-time role.

“This means a lot. I have been fortunate to have played under some tremendous leaders at Sydney Thunder, starting with Shane Watson.

T”here have also been other quality skippers including Callum Ferguson, Usman Khawaja, and Chris Green. Each of them had positive impacts on the team, and something they all did well was they led by their actions – and that’s something I want to do,” said Sangha after being appointed as the new skipper.
