AUS vs IND: Yashasvi Jaiswal’s ‘golden duck’ on First Ball

Team India’s explosive opener Yashasvi Jaiswal failed to carry on his sublime batting touch in the first inning of the Adelaide Test, on Friday, December 6, as he got dismissed by pacer Mitchell Starc on the first ball of the game. Notably, Jaiswal was coming into the game after smacking a daddy hundred (161 runs) in Perth. However, Starc got the better of him after he trapped the southpaw in front of the wicket.

For the unversed, the ongoing day-night Test is a vital part of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT 2024-25). As a result, the 22-year-old got himself enlisted into an unwanted record which also consists of the legendary, Sunil Gavaskar. Courtesy of the LBW (Leg Before Wicket dismissal), Yashasvi Jaiswal became only the seventh batter to have dismissed on the first ball of a Test match.

Quite astonishingly, Gavaskar was the first Indian batter to suffer the wrath of a pacer upfront in the form of the former England bowler, Geoff Arnold, when he was dismissed on the first ball of the Manchester Test in 1974. Fascinatingly, this incident did not happen just once for the former India legend as suffered the same fate on two more occasions.

West Indies’ fiery pacer Malcolm Marshall handed the now 75-year-old, a first-ball dismissal in Kolkata in the closing phases of the year 1983. Thereafter, Pakistan’s former Skipper and pace legend, Imran Khan, too claimed Sunil Gavaskar‘s wicket on the first delivery during a Test played in Jaipur in the year 1987.

  • AUS vs IND [WATCH]: Rohit Sharma’s comeback cut short by Scott Boland on Day 1 of the Pink Ball Test

AUS vs IND [WATCH]: Rohit Sharma’s comeback cut short by Scott Boland on Day 1 of the Pink Ball Test

On Day 1 of the Pink-Ball Test against Australia at the historic Adelaide Oval, Indian captain Rohit Sharma made a much-anticipated return to the crease after missing the first Test due to the birth of his son. Batting at No.6, a position he had not occupied in over 2172 days, Rohit’s comeback was filled with hope but ultimately marred by a brilliant delivery from Australian pacer Scott Boland. The Indian skipper’s innings lasted only three runs.

Rohit Sharma’s return: A spectacle of skepticism

Rohit’s return was met with excitement as he stepped onto the field after missing the first game. Having decided to bat at No.6 to accommodate KL Rahul at the top of the order, Rohit aimed to leverage his historical success in this batting position. Statistically, he has fared remarkably well at No.6, boasting an average of 54.57 with three centuries and six fifties from just 25 innings. This impressive record highlighted his ability to stabilize innings and accelerate scoring when necessary.

However, as Rohit took his stance against Boland, it became evident that he was not quite in his rhythm. The transition from opener to middle-order batter can often be challenging for players accustomed to setting the pace of an innings. Despite his prior success at No.6, Rohit’s lack of recent match practice appeared to hinder him as he faced Boland’s lethal bowling.

Scott Boland gets Rohit with an exceptional delivery

In the 26th over of India’s innings, Boland delivered a good-length ball that pitched outside off stump and swung back sharply. Rohit, perhaps still finding his footing, attempted to defend but was caught off guard as the ball nipped back and struck his front pad after evading his bat. The umpire wasted no time in raising his finger, and Rohit’s dismissal not only signaled his early exit but also underscored a recurring vulnerability against in-swinging deliveries. Before departing, Rohit consulted Rishabh Pant about a potential review but ultimately chose not to challenge the decision,

    A fragile Indian batting performance

Rohit’s dismissal came at a critical juncture for India, who had already lost centurion of the last game at Perth Yashasvi Jaiswal for a golden duck. And further lost key wickets of Rahul and Shubman Gill. Both had provided some stability with a partnership but were unable to prevent the collapse. Virat Kohli‘s low score of just seven runs further compounded India’s woes as they faced mounting pressure from an aggressive Australian bowling attack led by Mitchell Starc and Boland. Later on Ravichandran Ashwin and Nitish Reddy, shown some fight with the bat but could not lead India to a big score as they were eventually bundled out for only 180.

  • AUS vs IND: Kohli needs just one century to match Bradman’s iconic record during Adelaide Test

AUS vs IND: Kohli needs just one century to match Bradman’s iconic record during Adelaide Test

Breaking of cricket records and Virat Kohli have remained quite synonymous with each other for a major part of his international cricket career. Especially when it comes to his batting records on Australian shores, he has been a notch above the rest of the players. So much so that he now is on the verge of breaking a long-standing record of none other than the greatest player to have ever graced the game of cricket, Sir Donald Bradman.

It is no surprise for cricket fans to witness and often read about Bradman holding most of the iconic records in cricket history. One such record is for the most international centuries scored away from home. Notably, between the years 1930 and 1948, the ‘Don’ of cricket seemingly scored centuries for fun in England. During his 19 appearances on the English soil, the legendary Australian went on to rack up 11 centuries.

Quite fascinating as it may sound, on the other hand, one of the modern greats Virat Kohli, is on the verge of equalling Sir Don’s record, albeit, in his backyard aka Adelaide. Currently, Kohli has 10 centuries to his name in the Kangaroo nation and if he is able to replicate his Perth batting heroics, he will be tied with Bradman for scoring most centuries on a foreign land in international cricket.

For the unversed, Australia are all set to host India in the second Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT 2024-25) after getting humiliated in Perth. However, for a change, the game will be played with the pink ball instead of the usual ‘red cherry’ in the home city of Bradman. The match will begin on December 6, in Adelaide

Speaking of Virat Kohli’s credentials in Australia, so far the star Indian batter has accumulated 2,710 runs from 43 appearances for Team India. During these games, the Delhi-based batter maintained an impressive average of 54.20 and smacked a memorable 169 runs at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) for his best score in the oz land. Notably, this knock came in December of 2014.

Apart from the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) and modern-day great, some notable cricketers too have some sensational records in terms of scoring hundreds away from home. Legendary players such as India’s pride Sachin Tendulkar aka the Master Blaster along with the West Indian great, Sir Vivian Richards, too are enlisted in this elite list of batters. Besides, Jack Hobbs of England and the legendary Sunil Gavaskar have also enjoyed batting for a long time against foreign opponents in their den.

While Sachin Tendulkar has nine centuries to his name against Sri Lanka, Hobbs too had as many centuries but in Australia. Apart from them, Richards made eight centuries against England after featuring in 39 matches for West Indies. While following him closer was Sunil Gavaskar who enjoyed tormenting the West Indies bowlers with seven centuries to his name in the Caribbean islands.

Kohli ends his lean patch with scintillating century in Perth

Speaking of Virat Kohli on the current Australia tour, the batter found his batting mojo after failing to score big at home against New Zealand in recent times. However, his love affair with scoring hundreds in Australia continued as he scored a vital unbeaten 100* off 143 deliveries in Perth.

This eventually piloted India to register a dominating 295-run victory to lead the BGT 2024-25 series by a margin of 1-0, with a chance to feature in another World Test Championship (WTC) final still intact. But it stiff remains stiff for both teams. However, there will be three more Tests after Adelaide, which provides ample opportunity for Virat Kohli to script history in Australia.
