    IPL 2025: “It’s not harsh” – Moeen Ali, Adil Rashid leave Harry Brook to rot after his ban

    England’s star cricketer Harry Brook decided to pull out of the entire IPL 2025 season just a few days before it was about to begin. Brook’s decision to pull out at the last moment forced the BCCI to apply a mandatory two-year ban on him which will be applicable for the next two years.

    While BCCI’s decision to ban Harry Brook was criticized by some, it has now received some support from former England allrounder Moeen Ali and his good friend Adil Rashid. Moeen admitted that the decision wasn’t harsh and understood the importance of it.

    Rashid also recalled a no. of times when overseas players have pulled out at the last moment which makes it difficult for the franchises to reshuffle their plans. Both of them agreed that the rules were put in place right before the auction, so they cannot be termed wrong.

    “You actually mess a lot of stuff” – Moeen Ali

    While speaking during a podcast “Beard Before Cricket”, Moeen Ali backed BCCI’s decision to ban Harry Brook and disagreed to call it a harsh decision. He understood the implications of the earlier rule where the players would pull out at the last moment, resulting in the teams facing a lot of problems.

    “It’s not harsh. I kind of agree with it, in a way, because a lot of people do that. A lot of people have done it in the past, and then they come back in and they end up getting a better financial package, or whatever it is. And he kind of messes a lot of things up as well at the same time,” Moeen said.

    “I mean, it’s messed his team up, obviously, by pulling out. Any team that loses Harry Brook is messed up a bit, and they’ve got to now rejig everything and stuff like that,” he added.

    Moeen Ali backs the decision to ban Harry Brook

    The former England allrounder claims that the rule was already in place and the BCCI is right in banning the players. He feels that the sudden pull-out of such a top player messes a lot of things for a franchise.

    “Forget him for a second, but if you do pull out, the rule is that you get a ban unless it’s for family reasons or… due to injury or something. If it’s injury or something, it’s different. But I think if you just pull out, then it’s… I kind of agree with the teams,” said Moeen.

    “You actually mess a lot of stuff up. He’s (Harry Brook) a top player. They’ve probably picked the team around him, and then all of a sudden, you’re pulling out,” the former England skipper added.

    Adil Rashid backs BCCI’s decision

    Adil Rashid, who was also in the same podcast, agreed with Moeen Ali and feels that the players knew about this rule when going into the auction. Hence, he disagreed to call the decision a harsh one.

    “They actually put that rule in place before, and then this happened. So, you know when you’re going in, this is the rule. So when you put your name in, you know if you pull out, this is going to happen. So you know the consequences of it. So I don’t think it’s harsh,” said Rashid.

    “No, but if you pull out and you have, like you say, an injury or whatever, then I think that’s where something like the rules may differ or change in that way,” he remarked.

    Harry Brook was signed by Delhi Capitals for INR 6.25 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction. However, he decided to pull out of the season, mainly because of the workload pressure after Jos Buttler’s resignation as England’s white-ball captain.

    Being the team’s vice-captain, Brook was spoken about England’s white-ball captaincy by the managing director Rob Key. He is the frontrunner to lead the team in the white-ball formats, although the decision is yet to be announced.

    Scoring runs was getting difficult for the Indian team in Rajkot as a disciplined bowling display from England groped the Indian batters and led them to commit mistakes on the pitch. No Indian batter could withstand the fine line and length bowled by English bowlers. Apart from Hardik Pandya who scored 40 runs off 35 balls, the entire Indian batting order succumbed and gave their wickets away cheaply. India’s run chase was wrapped up at 145/9 runs in 20 overs leading the way for an England victory by 26 runs in the match.

    Afghanistan pulled off one of the greatest World Cup shocks on Sunday when they defeated defending champions England by 69 runs in New Delhi.

    Chasing 285 to win, after opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz had hit a blistering 80, England were bowled out for 215 despite Harry Brook’s 66 with spinners Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Rashid Khan claiming three wickets each.

    “It’s a very proud moment to be here in the World Cup beating the last champions, it is a good moment for the whole nation and the team. A wonderful performance for the bowlers and the batters,” said Mujeeb.

    The stunning upset gave Afghanistan just their second World Cup win to add to a lone victory over Scotland at the 2015 tournament.

    They came into Sunday’s clash having lost their opening two games in India and on a 14-match losing World Cup streak.

    After Gurbaz and the recalled Ikram Alikhil, with 58, had given them a decent target to defend, Afghanistan’s bowlers went to work, striking at regular intervals.

    “It was disappointing, having won the toss and elected to bowl,” said England skipper Jos Buttler.

    “Congratulations to Afghanistan, they outplayed us today.” Jonny Bairstow (two) was lbw to Fazalhaq Farooqi in the second over before Joe Root was clean bowled by 22-year-old man of the match Mujeeb for 11.

    Mohammad Nabi got rid of Dawid Malan, who made 140 against Bangladesh, for 32 to precipitate a slide which saw England slump to 138-6.

    Buttler was clean bowled by seamer Naveen-ul-Haq for nine, Rashid Khan had Liam Livingstone lbw on 10 before Nabi also dismissed Sam Curran (10).

    England were tied down, at one stage going more than eight overs without hitting a boundary until Brook managed the team’s lone six of the innings in the 31st over.

    Mujeeb sent back Chris Woakes before effectively sealing the game in his next over, having Brook caught behind by Alikhil with England at 169-8.

    Brook’s 66 came off 61 balls with seven fours and a six.

    Late fireworks from Adil Rashid (20), Reece Topley (15) and Mark Wood (18) only served to take England past the 200-mark.

    Earlier, Gurbaz, 21, piled up his runs off 57 balls with eight fours and four sixes to register his eighth score in excess of fifty in his ODI career.

    However, he was furious that he was unable to go on to make a sixth century when he was involved in a disastrous run-out mix-up with captain Hashmatullah Shahidi in the 19th over.

    Gurbaz failed to make his ground and Buttler whipped off the bails from a throw by substitute fielder David Willey.

    An angry Gurbaz smashed his bat into a chair as he departed with his team on 122-3.

    Gurbaz had needed just 33 balls to get to his half-century as Afghanistan, put into bat, stormed to 100 without loss from 77 deliveries.

    Once Gurbaz was dismissed, England’s spinners dragged the champions back into the contest in the middle overs.

    The impressive Adil Rashid finished with 3-42 from his 10 overs having initially broken Afghanistan’s 114-run opening stand when he had Ibrahim Zadran (28) caught.

    But Alikhil chimed in with a 66-ball 58 after surviving being hit on the shoulder by a 147 km/h delivery from fast bowler Mark Wood.

    Mujeeb added 28 to the total off 16 balls as Afghanistan finished strongly. England’s seamers endured a day to forget with Sam Curran conceding 46 runs off four overs and new ball bowler Chris Woakes coughing up 41 off his four.

    England went into Sunday’s game after a loss to New Zealand and victory over Bangladesh while Afghanistan suffered heavy defeats by six wickets to Bangladesh and eight wickets to India.

    England’s Dominant Batting Display

    England’s decision to bat first paid off as their top-order batsmen dominated the Bangladeshi bowling attack. Dawid Malan emerged as the star of the innings with an extraordinary century. Malan’s scintillating knock saw him score 140 runs off just 107 balls, comprising 16 boundaries and 5 towering sixes. Former England captain Joe Root also made a significant contribution, smashing 82 runs off 68 deliveries, including 8 fours and a six. Opening batsman Jonny Bairstow set the stage with a brisk 52 off 59 balls.

    The catch that stole the show

    While Bangladesh struggled to contain the English batsmen, they found a moment of brilliance in the field. Hridoy and Shanto combined forces to execute a breathtaking catch that dismissed Adil Rashid. The spectacular catch occurred during the penultimate over of England’s innings when Rashid attempted a big hit towards cow corner. However, Rashid failed to connect cleanly, sending the ball soaring towards deep mid-wicket.

    Hridoy, stationed at deep mid-wicket, exhibited exceptional athleticism as he leaped to pluck the ball out of the air. In an astonishing display of teamwork, Hridoy, who was perilously close to the boundary ropes, instinctively tossed the ball towards Shanto, who was stationed nearby. Shanto made no mistake, completing the catch to send Rashid back to the pavilion.

    Mahedi Hasan shines despite the run fest

    Despite the brilliance in the field, the Bangladeshi bowlers had a challenging day containing the English batsmen. Mahedi Hasan emerged as the most successful bowler for Bangladesh, claiming 4 wickets for 71 runs in his 8 overs. Shoriful Islam also made a notable contribution, taking 3 wickets for 75 runs in his 10 overs.
