Manchester United could axe at least 10 players this summer in firesale

Manchester United will attempt to make a vast summer refresh with a colossal squad exodus incoming.

That’s according to the Manchester Evening News, which reveals that Old Trafford may bid farewell to a double-figure list of players.

Some of United’s big figures are anticipated to hang up their boots at the close of this season, including Jonny Evans and Tom Heaton.

Evans, at 37, hasn’t started for United in four months and last took the pitch on December 18. Meanwhile, Heaton, who will turn 39 next month, has been sidelined since early February due to an unspecified injury.

The likes of Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof are also expected to part ways with the club.

Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Jadon Sancho might be sacrificed in hopes of acquiring a new goalscorer, with Casemiro also made available for a move.

Chelsea holds an obligation to buy Sancho for between £20 million and £25 million but may consider paying a penalty clause to swerve making his season-long loan permanent.

The Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) effectively assess the value of non-academy players, determining a player’s price based on the transfer fee allocated over the duration of their contract.

Casemiro joined Manchester United for £60 million on a four-year contract in 2022, leading the club to seek £15 million for his sale to avoid a loss under PSR.

Antony was acquired for £81.3 million during the same summer on a five-year deal, costing £32.52 million, while Sancho would stand at £14.58 million if United continues to hold onto him.

Man United might also be compelled to reduce their squad as they face the prospect of a season devoid of European football, given that the Champions League and Europa League formats require an additional eight matches.

The last time United embarked on a campaign without European competition in 2014-15, they played 44 games, suffering a staggering 4-0 defeat to MK Dons in the second round of the League Cup.

Already having played 46 matches this term, United is assured of at least 11 more.

In terms of goalkeepers, Altay Bayindir’s future remains uncertain. He may seek opportunities elsewhere to secure regular playing time, hoping to start for Turkey in the World Cup next year.

The Red Devils also missed out on Chelsea-bound Geovany Quenda, leaving them still searching for a new winger.

United could also bid farewell to Tyrell Malacia, currently on loan at PSV Eindhoven, who may secure a permanent transfer, while they might face challenges in offloading Luke Shaw, who hasn’t started for the club in 13 months, participating in only nine matches over the last 19 months.

The futures of promising youngsters Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho remain uncertain.

Despite not having signed a renewal, Mainoo’s current contract extends until 2028, and Garnacho faced a rejected £40 million bid from Napoli in January.

Garnacho has received consistent praise from Amorim for his adaptability, while Mainoo, despite spending nearly four months sidelined due to injuries, showcased his potential as a playmaker with a goal in the 2-0 Europa League victory over FCSB in January.

The Red Devils must also consider the long-term future of Joshua Zirkzee, who was initially signed as a support striker but is now thriving as a playmaker.

The fate of Rasmus Hojlund, too, remains to be determined.

One player significantly affected by injuries is Mason Mount, who has managed to play only 33 of a possible 98 matches for United.

Yet, he may find a second chance, as Amorim believes he could fit in his 3-4-2-1 system.

Senior sales might be complemented by homegrown departures, as Amorim has previously emphasized the need for United to enhance their efforts in selling their cultivated talents.

Last summer, United accrued £109.18 million, including add-ons, through player departures.

Since 2022, their most lucrative sales have predominantly involved academy products: Andreas Pereira, James Garner, Anthony Elanga, Dean Henderson, Mason Greenwood, and Scott McTominay.

Man United’s next fixture is against Nottingham Forest on April 1, with kick-off at 7pm.

  • Man United must build around ageing Fernandes but still need five players

Man United must build around ageing Fernandes but still need five players

Passion off the pitch, passion on it. This showed how much people care about Manchester United. This was a good day for the club. The sun even came out.

Thousands of United fans protested against their club’s co-owners, the Glazers, with a march before the game and chants during it.

They raged against the mismanagement of United, the shameful accumulation of debt, and the treatment of their club by the Glazers as an asset to be sweated.

Fans care deeply. The time United should worry is when there’s apathy.

Their head coach, Ruben Amorim, obviously cares. His reputation has taken a kicking, and he’s desperately keen to prove himself, and his methods.

Amorim’s body language throughout captured his emotional engagement with his players, encouraging and organising them.

His players have had their passion questioned but not here.

Bruno Fernandes certainly cares for the cause, Alejandro Garnacho, too, as did the inexperienced but whole-hearted substitutes like Ayden Heaven and Toby Collyer.

Even if the supporters’ hopes of getting the Glazers out looks a forlorn one – there’s too much money for the Americans to rake in longer-term – they can take some hope for the future in the fight most of their players showed in a deserved draw against Arsenal.

Some are unlikely to be here next season, ageing players like Christian Eriksen, Casemiro and the consistently unconvincing Victor Lindelof.

United have to get them off the wage-bill, and build around younger, hungrier, more mobile players. And around Fernandes, United’s key player at 30.

He has his critics, but few inside Old Trafford. He has rescued United too often this season. He rallied the team when Arsenal were controlling the first half.

Martin Odegaard ran the show, too quick of mind and body for Casemiro and Eriksen.

Fernandes annoys, moans, frustrates but he cares. After Garnacho won a free-kick shortly before the break, Fernandes punished David Raya’s inexplicable decision to leave so much of the left side of his goal open.

Fernandes accepted the invitation, and lifted the ball over the wall and in. He scores important goals – against Arsenal in the FA Cup, the winner against Rangers in the Europa League, and launching fightbacks against Everton and Manchester City.

Fernandes’ passing also releases Garnacho, the 20-year-old dribbler who has to remain part of Amorim’s plan. He reflects the promise of youth, so often an elixir for United.

Lenny Yoro, a 19-year-old centre-back who mixes a sharp reading of incoming danger and his touch and fluidity of movement in possession. He suits Amorim’s approach.

Heaven came on at half time for Yoro, who’d frustratingly taken a knock. Heaven is a raw prospect, a year younger than Yoro, and playing his first minutes in the Premier League.

Heaven received a few boos from the fans of Arsenal, who he’d left in the summer. Quick and strong in the air, Heaven was fully committed.

He’s left-footed, a useful option with Lisandro Martinez injured. Heaven was not to blame when Jurrien Timber cut in from the right to set up the equaliser after 74 minutes.

Noussair Mazraoui failed to stick with Timber, who cut the ball back for Declan Rice. The £105m midfielder scored with a sweeping shot from right to left. “Declan Rice – we got him half-price,” sang the Arsenal fans.

Rice, meanwhile, was down the other end, shushing the Stretford End. It was a fine goal, and his subsequent tackle on Rasmus Hojlund carried echoes of Bobby Moore in timing and precision.

But it was still a disappointing day for his team. The title race was over anyway, but great teams fight to the end, however bitter.

Arsenal would have lost but for Raya, who made an astonishing double-save from Fernandes.

Troy Deeney claims Rasmus Hojlund is not Man United’s biggest problem, but one ‘frustration’ remains

Odegaard tried to force a way through but Collyer hounded him until Arsenal’s captain surrendered possession. Collyer brought some welcome mobility to United’s midfield.

Collyer had replaced Zirkzee, who has a neat touch but lacks the the physicality or mentality for the No.9 role. He’s better from deeper.

He managed one good back-heel, well-saved by Raya, but was otherwise controlled by William Saliba. There was a 60-40 in his favour with Timber and the Arsenal defender won it.

It’s been a wretched season for United, but there will surely be more belief in Amorim and his methods after this second half.

Patrick Dorgu is an Amorim signing and at 20 years old has the pace and boldness for left-wing back but was suspended here.

So there is hope for the future, including the possibility that the remaining players will increasingly absorb Amorim’s tactics, especially after he has had a pre-season with them.

Amorim makes a legitimate point about Mikel Arteta being given time to build Arsenal, although United’s head coach really needs to tone down his occasional gloomy pronouncements.

He still needs four or five players in the summer. Arsenal, to the surprise of nobody, still need a No9.

  • ‘I did an investigation’ – Amorim dishes out unique punishment to Garnacho

‘I did an investigation’ – Amorim dishes out unique punishment to Garnacho

Manchester United star Alejandro Garnacho’s substitution strop is set to cost him, but not in the form of a fine.

Garnacho was the unlucky individual who got substituted for tactical reasons after defender Patrick Dorgu was sent off in the first half of United’s 3-2 win over Ipswich Town on Wednesday.

    4

But instead of sitting on the bench and watching the remainder of the half, Garnacho headed straight down the touchline and into the tunnel at Old Trafford.

The young Argentine also posted a picture of himself looking disappointed on the pitch on social media after the game, apparently to voice his displeasure at the decision… despite United actually winning the match.

In his post-match interviews Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim confirmed he would speak to the forward about the incident.

Former Wales international and talkSPORT pundit Dean Saunders took a stronger stance on the issue and warned Garnacho his attitude was ‘going to ruin his career’ if he kept it up.

But speaking at his press conference on Friday, Amorim confirmed the reason behind Garnacho’s mid-match dash was nothing sinister.

However, the 20-year-old would still be punished given the negative perception it gave off as Amorim looks to set high standards – by buying the entire team dinner.

“He came to me,” Amorim said.

“Was funny because the next day he came to me to my office. I did some investigation and he went to the dressing room, changed his clothes because he was wet, he watched the game not on the bench and at the end of the game he was there and went home. So there is not an issue there.

“He’s a young kid that will learn. The important thing was the next morning he was speaking with me. I think we need to see that small things like walking out onto the pitch – because (Joshua) Zirkzee did the same thing and the context was different – but it was the same thing.

“We have to understand the situation, the context, the age of the players, of course they have to be better.

“They have to understand perception here is really important. But you can deal with that the next day and move on so let’s just move on.

“But I told him at Manchester United, everything is important and the perception in a big club is really important. So he is going to pay a dinner to all the team and that’s it.

“I think he (Garnacho) understands. But, like I said, [the players] read everything, all the small things. And I know the players quite well, I played for quite a while, I understand they are frustrated. He was subbed, he was playing well and has to go off in that moment of the game.

“It’s hard to deal with everything but they have to deal with everything. I just try to help them be better footballers.”

Despite Garnacho and Amorim clearing the air regarding what happened against Ipswich, the Argentinian is no guarantee to feature for United’s FA Cup fifth round tie against Fulham on Sunday.

“He has a knock,” Amorim said.

Ruben Amorim, manager of Manchester United, looking dejected.

“When he went to shoot, was blocked almost inside the box. He has a knock, I expect for him to be ready but we will see.

“I have to wait until tomorrow.”

A win over the Cottagers on Sunday would be United’s third in their last five across all competitions.

The Red Devils have already beaten Fulham twice this term, with both league fixtures ending 1-0.

Victory for United on Sunday would also be the second time in the last three campaigns the English giants have beaten Fulham three times in a single season.

The two teams met in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup during the 2022/23 season at Old Trafford, as United ran out 3-1 winners over a nine-man Fulham.

‘Embarrassing!’ – talkSPORT host left disgusted by Man United’s Garnacho stance

talkSPORT’s Andy Goldstein was left disgusted by Man United’s temptation to sell Alejandro Garnacho.

Premier League rivals Chelsea are the ones leading the charge for the 20-year-old talent after Napoli’s interest in him faded.

    4

It’s understood that Chelsea are ready to open talks over a move for the winger with the Argentine star valued at up to £70million, talkSPORT understands.

As exclusively revealed by talkSPORT this week Garnacho is reluctantly open to leaving Old Trafford over fears about where he fits into Ruben Amorim’s system.

Goldstein called Man United’s decision to sell Garnacho ‘more than embarrassing’ considering the club’s current financial woes.

“It’s very difficult for me to slag off my own club, but I think it undermines the fact of how shambolic it’s being run at the moment,” he said on talkSPORT Drive.

“Since Jim Ratcliffe has come in, we should be building if you get a young exciting player.

“We know what [Garnacho] is about, that overhead kick against Everton was just off the scale, it was ridiculous.

“We know he’s a talented boy, these are the players we should be looking at to come through and be the future of Man United.

“The fact we’re even discussing a player like that being sold to a rival like Chelsea is embarrassing.

“The fact Chelsea are willing to pay between £65 and 70 million should say to Man United why they are prepared. We should keep someone like that.

“The fact he’s going to have to go to balance the books is more than embarrassing.”.

Goldstein added that he ‘really doesn’t know how this club is being run’.

The club’s financial troubles come after ticket price hikes have led to protests from fans outside Old Trafford in recent months.

Whilst Man United continue to perform poorly in the league, Ruben Amorim‘s appointment as manager came after Erik Ten Hag was offered a contract extension just six months before he was sacked.

“It’s a joke, it’s absolutely embarrassing,” Goldstein said.

“The fact we would even contemplate selling one of our bright stars to a club that don’t even need a player in that position is unthinkable.”

Agreeing with his co-host, Darren Bent replied: “If Man United are prepared to sell him to Chelsea – who are a rival – for £70million, surely something clicks in your head that maybe they’ve got a player on their hands.”

Garnacho’s Premier League stats from this year aren’t much to shout about

Garnacho’s time at Man United has been largely mixed, and his consideration of leaving comes following concerns over where he fits into Amorim’s system.

He notably won the FIFA Puskas Award for the best goal of 2023 with a bicycle kick scored over Everton.

In addition, he has won the League Cup in 2022-23 and the FA Cup in 2023-24.

Of late, his time at United has been tarnished. He did not celebrate after scoring in a 3-0 win over Leicester City when Ruud van Nistelrooy took interim charge.

Captain Bruno Fernandes said it was because he felt unsupported by fans and he had ‘lost faith’ from supporters.

He was dropped alongside Marcus Rashford by Ruben Amorim for the Manchester derby which they won 2-1.

Chelsea take first step towards Alejandro Garnacho signing

Chelsea are ready to open talks with Manchester United over a potential move for Alejandro Garnacho, talkSPORT understands.

United have been in discussions with Napoli over academy product Garnacho but the Italian side’s offers fell below United’s asking price, which is understood to be between £60-£70million.

    2

Chelsea have been monitoring the situation and are weighing up whether to make a formal bid.

As exclusively revealed by talkSPORT this week Garnacho is reluctantly open to leaving Old Trafford over fears about where he fits into Ruben Amorim’s system.

The young Argentina international has been at Man United since 2020, where he joined from Atletico Madrid, emerging through the academy at Old Trafford.

The 20-year-old has made 172 appearances for Man United at under 18, 19, 21 and senior level.

For the senior team he has scored 23 goals and 14 assists, scoring eight times across all competitions this season.

His last goal this season came in November in a 3-2 victory over Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League.

Chelsea could bolster their attacking options with Garnacho, who could reunite with Jadon Sancho – another Man United prospect.

It comes after Napoli’s €50million bid was rejected by Man United, with the club valuing him between £60-70m.

Napoli will hope to bring in reinforcements after Khvicha Kvaratskhelia moved to Ligue 1 side PSG.

The Serie A side appear to have turned their attentions to Karim Adeyemi at Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea will be keen to replace Mykhailo Mudryk who faces a potentially lengthy ban of four years for doping.

Further to this, Garnarcho’s agents Carlos Cambeiro and Quique De Lucas were both at Stamford Bridge on Monday for Chelsea’s match at home to Wolves.

Garnacho’s time at Man United has been largely mixed, and his consideration of leaving comes amidst worries where he fits into Amorim’s system.

talkSPORT revealed last week that Chelsea are monitoring Garnacho’s situation at Old Trafford.

It comes as Enzo Maresca looks to bolster his options out wide this month.

The 20-year-old has three-and-a-half years remaining on his United deal, having signed an extension back in 2023.

Chelsea are currently without Mykhailo Mudryk due to suspension, whilst Jadon Sancho is only on loan at the club from the Red Devils.

Garnacho’s agents have now appeared to further fuel speculation linking him with a move to west London.

Chelsea are in Premier League action on Monday night as Wolves visited Stamford Bridge.

Carlos Cambeiro and Quique de Lucas Martinez from Garnacho’s LeaderS agency were in the stands for the match.

Their attendance was confirmed by a snap from the stadium shared to Instagram by Cambeiro.

The agency also represents Garnacho’s United teammate Amad Diallo.

Garnacho has made 32 appearances across all competitions for the Red Devils so far this season.

Across those matches, the Argentina international has scored eight goals and provided five assists.

Only Diallo and Bruno Fernandes have been involved in more goals for United this term.

Chelsea would face competition for the forward, though, with Atletico Madrid also showing interest in a move.

Garnacho previously spent time in Atletico’s academy before joining United aged 16 in 2020.

Cambeiro and Martinez watched Chelsea go 1-0 up with Tosin Adarabioyo’s goal after he did well to control Reece James’ shot.

But the away side hit back just before half time when Matt Doherty poked the ball in from close range after Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez spilled the ball into the Wolves man from a corner.

  • How Man United could line up against Ipswich as Amorim experiments in first game

How Man United could line up against Ipswich as Amorim experiments in first game

Ruben Amorim will take charge of his first game as Manchester United manager this weekend and he may be set to experiment.

The Portuguese boss is going to be on the touchline against Ipswich, aiming to start on the right foot after a successful interim spell under Ruud van Nistelrooy.

    6

Amorim took charge of his first training session on MondayCredit: Getty

Van Nistelrooy went unbeaten in his short stint after taking over from Erik ten Hag and steadied the ship for Amorim’s arrival.

Man United are still 13th in the Premier League though following their worst-ever start, leaving them desperately in need of points to rise up the table.

Their opening game under a new regime comes against Ipswich who stunned Tottenham to claim their first top-flight win before the international break.

Kieran McKenna, who used to be a Red Devils coach, also worked at Spurs and will be eyeing another scalp against his former employers.

Ipswich vs Man United: Amorim’s first line-up

Amorim has a few big decisions to make in his first game at Man United and he could be set to experiment.

The first of his decisions comes in defence as he has multiple injuries to deal with.

He is known to play a 3-4-3 formation and there are no signs of him moving away from that, as he taught the system in his first training session on Monday.

But that means he needs three centre-backs and with Harry Maguire injured and Victor Lindelof a doubt along with Lisandro Martinez, his options are limited.

Lindelof hobbled off for Sweden at the weekend and Martinez was sent home by Argentina with a back issue.

Matthijs de Ligt will start and it’s likely Jonny Evans will have to come in too while in that third spot, Leny Yoro could finally be set to make his debut.

Yoro has been back in training and could come into the team

    6

Yoro is yet to appear for United after suffering a serious foot injury in pre-season, but the £52million teenager has been back in training and could be ready to feature.

Luke Shaw could also be an option in a back three when he’s fit and he trained there in Amorim’s first training session at the club.

Behind the defence, Andre Onana will of course be in goal, as Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui prepare to take up roles further up the pitch at wing-back.

However, an unusual pick in Antony could be set to play there, with Amorim working with him at right wing-back on Monday.

It’s yet to be seen whether he has trained in that position since, but it may be a move the Brazilian won’t be keen on.

He provided a very frustrated reaction last season when being told to play at left-back by Ten Hag against Liverpool in the FA Cup.

Antony could be set for a new role and he may not like it...

    6

But Amorim must see him as a contender to play that role along with Dalot and Mazraoui.

Kobbie Mainoo returned to training this week but hasn’t played a single minute since October 6 due to injury so a midfield pairing of Manuel Ugarte and Casemiro is expected.

However, Mason Mount and Christian Eriksen will be hoping to impress Amorim in his early days to break into his best line-up eventually.

And Man United fans think Mount’s career could be boosted under the new boss after he was heard being praised in training footage released earlier this week.

The former Chelsea man looked to be training in an advanced role behind the striker, which is where Bruno Fernandes will also be slotting into this system.

Fernandes is sure to start but now with Mount impressing too, Amorim has a very tough decision to make…

Sunderland kickstarted Amad’s journey from a winger into central areas

Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo have been competing for two starting spots for the majority of the season.

It now looks like they’ll only have one to fight over from now on as their new manager won’t be playing with out-and-out wingers.

Rashford has failed to regain any form this campaign while Garnacho has been criticised too, leaving Amad as potentially the best option.

He played in a more central role while on loan at Sunderland and earned rave reviews from his former Black Cats boss Tony Mowbray.

As well as that, he’s also been in great form and Amorim played him in one of these roles in training on Monday afternoon.

Up front, Rasmus Hojlund will likely be the Viktor Gyokeres of this system at Man United, as Joshua Zirkzee challenges him for a start.

Rashford could also be a contender to start up front, as he led the line during a practice drill at Carrington this week.

Of course, not all international players had returned to training with Amorim, including Hojlund, but the England international may be handed a new position to try and refind some form.

    • Manchester United won their last away league game against Ipswich (1-0 in April 2002). Only once in their league history have they won consecutive visits to Portman Road, doing so in 1962/1963.
    • This will be Rúben Amorim’s first match in charge of Manchester United. Aged 39 years and 302 days on the day of this game, he’s the youngest to take charge of his first match for the Red Devils since Wilf McGuinness in August 1969 (31y 288d).

Ipswich vs Man United: What has been said?

Amorim has already revealed what Man United fans can expect to see in his first game in charge.

Speaking to the club’s website, he said: “I think you will see an idea. You could like it or not, I don’t know, but you will see an idea.

“You will see a positioning. You will see something that we want to reach that kind of level. You will feel that.

“We have to know that it’s like two trainings before the first match. This is the best league in the world.

“But if I have to say something to you, [it’s that] you will see an idea. This I can guarantee.”

He added: “The most important thing for me, at this moment, is to create the principles, the identity and the character that we had in the past.”

Dean Saunders BELIEVES Amorim must change Man United’s work ethic!
    • After their first Premier League win of the season last time out away to Tottenham, Ipswich are looking to earn back-to-back wins in the competition for the first time since February 2002 (a run of four that started with a 2-1 win against Tottenham).
    • Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes has made 137 passes which have broken the opposition’s offside line in the Premier League this season, at least 15 more than any other player.

Troy Deeney rips into Alejandro Garnacho for refusing to celebrate goal

Troy Deeney has slammed Alejandro Garnacho for his muted goal celebration against Leicester.

The Argentinian youngster got on the scoresheet as Manchester United cruised to a 3-0 win over the Foxes in Ruud van Nistelrooy‘s final game in interim charge at Old Traffford.

Despite rounding things off with a stunning curled effort on 82 minutes, Garnacho appeared reluctant to celebrate afterwards, and instead seemed upset at finding the net.

At full-time, the 20-year-old could be seen deep in discussion with fellow goalscorer Bruno Fernandes on the pitch.

And the United captain later revealed that his teammate had chosen not to mark his latest goal after feeling a lack of support from the club’s fans.

Fernandes said: “Garnacho scored a banger but didn’t celebrate like he should because he thinks he has lost faith from some fans.

“I told him people will always moan but lots of people like you and enjoy what you do. I told him to celebrate, it was something special.”

Garnacho’s refusal to celebrate came just days after he was goaded by a supporter outside Old Trafford prior to United’s midweek Europa League clash with PAOK.

But Fernandes’ explanation was not enough to convince former Watford striker Troy Deeney, who instead ripped into the young winger.

Appearing on talkSPORT’s Hawksbee and Jacobs show, Deeney was asked if Garnacho should have been thicker-skinned in the face of criticism.

He responded: “I said it last night on Match of the Day, and I’ll repeat it. It goes twofold.

“One, it says what players are like nowadays, where their skin is so thin that one gentleman can say what he wants to say and everyone sulks.

“And secondly, if he’s getting affected by that, I would say to him, just as an older pro: ‘[I] don’t think this football game is for you, big man’.”

Explaining his strong stance, Deeney continued: “Because you play for the biggest club in world football. If you play poorly, you’re going to get people to get on your case.

“If you play really well, you’re still going to get people to get on your case. You play for Man United.

Simon Jordan rips into Alejandro Garnacho for refusing to celebrate against Leicester

“It’s called jealousy and that’s part of the game. So, disappointed that he didn’t celebrate. It’s an unbelievable goal.

“But this will be the making or breaking of him, because if he can’t handle that from one gentleman with an iPhone in his face, then I don’t think this is the game for him, unfortunately.”

And it wasn’t just the former Watford skipper who was left less than impressed by Garnacho’s actions.

Simon Jordan was just as unsympathetic towards the young winger

talkSPORT’s Simon Jordan was also heavily critical of the starlet, arguing that Garnacho’s behaviour highlighted a weak mentality among United’s players.

Jordan said on White & Jordan: “What you saw on the weekend was the absolute embodiment of the culture of Man United, and the problem they’ve got in that dressing room where that kid doesn’t celebrate that goal.

“The reason why he doesn’t celebrate is because he’s had some hurty words said about him, or people have been critical of his performances. That is all you need to know.

Despite his co-pundit Martin Keown arguing that Garnacho’s actions were a sign of the toxicity surrounding the Red Devils, Jordan was unconvinced.

Slamming the Argentine international, he said: “It’s a self-indulgent load of old fanny.

“You’ve scored a goal playing for one of the best teams in English football, in one of the biggest clubs in English football, and all you can do is walk around like [Marcus] Rashford, which is the world’s on my shoulders, poor old me.

    “Change the narrative!”

  • Van de Ven is Premier League’s fastest player ahead of Arsenal and Chelsea stars

Van de Ven is Premier League’s fastest player ahead of Arsenal and Chelsea stars

Micky van de Ven showed what made him the Premier League’s fastest player during Tottenham’s 3-0 victory over Manchester United.

The defender raced nearly the length of the pitch to set up Brennan Johnson‘s opener, and his heroics at Old Trafford saw him record the fastest speed of any Premier League player this season.

And while the Dutchman’s stunning assist was arguably the game’s standout moment, it wasn’t actually where he hit top speed.

On the brink of half time, Van de Ven raced back to tackle United’s Alejandro Garnacho, reaching a staggering 37.12 km/h in the process.

Not only was this the fastest any Premier League player has run so far this season, it was also the fourth highest speed recorded since data began being collected in the 2020/21 season.

    Read More on Premier League

Incredibly, Van de Ven is responsible for three of the four top speeds recorded during this time, with his 37.38 km/h against Brentford last season topping the charts.

The 23-year-old’s season’s best against the Red Devils sees him place comfortably ahead of his fellow speed merchants.

Nottingham Forest‘s Anthony Elanga ranks second in the leaderboard, with his personal record of 35.90 km/h, over one km/h slower than van de Ven’s.

While Manchester City goal machine Erling Haaland leads the Premier League goalscoring charts by some distance with ten goals in his first six games, he ranks third in the sprinting category.

Haaland’s top speed of 35.74 km/h places him narrowly ahead of Spurs‘ Timo Werner (35.69 km/h), who comes in fourth place.

With Arsenal bidding to lift a first league title in over 20 years, they will surely need some pace in their squad to see off opponents.

And winger Gabriel Martinelli could be the man to provide this, who ranks fifth among the English top-flight’s most rapid players at 35.57 km/h.

Haaland is targeting a third consecutive Premier League Golden Boot, but even he is no match for Van de Ven's pace

Man United stars Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford also feature in the top ten in this category, with the speedy Argentine sixth (35.48 km/h), and his fellow attacker tenth (35.53 km/h).

Meanwhile, Southampton may look to make greater use of striker Cameron Archer’s sharpness if they are to turn their disappointing start to the season around.

Saints have endured a difficult return to the Premier League, sitting a lowly 19th in the table and without a win in their opening six games.

This comes in spite of Archer’s running statistics, who has recorded the seventh top speed of any player at 35.47 km/h.

Elsewhere among the early season speed demons, Pedro Neto has continued to showcase his frightening pace at new club Chelsea following his summer arrival from Wolves.

The Portuguese winger’s impressive 35.40 km/h places him eighth fastest for the campaign.

But this is still over one km/h shy of the 36.86 km/h he hit against Luton last season, which is the seventh fastest top speed on record in the Premier League.

Brighton‘s £30million signing Yankuba Minteh’s 35.58 km/h completes the top ten, with the swift Gambian winger sure to net his first goal for the club sooner rather than later with such pace to burn.

Top 10 fastest Premier League players this season (km/h)

    1. Micky van de Ven – Tottenham – 37.12
    2. Anthony Elanga – Nottingham Forest – 35.90
    3. Erling Haaland – Man City – 35.74
    4. Timo Werner – Tottenham – 35.69
    5. Gabriel Martinelli – Arsenal – 35.57
    6. Alejandro Garnacho – Man United – 35.48
    7. Cameron Archer – Southampton – 35.47
    8. Pedro Neto – Chelsea – 35.40
    9. Yankuba Minteh – Brighton – 35.38
    10. Marcus Rashford – Man United – 35.53

  • Garnacho ‘likes’ Ronaldo’s criticism of Ten Hag as Man United star risks trouble

Garnacho ‘likes’ Ronaldo’s criticism of Ten Hag as Man United star risks trouble

Alejandro Garnacho’s busy fingers may have dunked him in more hot water with Erik ten Hag.

The Manchester United winger was caught liking an Instagram post in which Cristiano Ronaldo was criticising the club’s manager.

United legend and Portugal captain Ronaldo made multiple headlines after his interview with former teammate Rio Ferdinand went live.

In one segment he criticised Ten Hag, the man he fell out with spectacularly during his second stint at the club from 2021 to 2022.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano had re-posted the comments on social media, and Garnacho liked the post, a decision he has since reversed, suggesting it was done accidentally.

In the interview, Ronaldo went in particularly hard on Garnacho’s current manager.

“Man United’s coach cannot say they can’t compete to win the Premier League and the Champions League every year,” Ronaldo said.

“This is Man United! You have to be there, to mentally say… listen, maybe we don’t have that potential, but I cannot say that. We’re going to try. You have to try.

“This is why Man United need to rebuild. If Ten Hag listens to Ruud van Nistelrooy… maybe he can help. He knows the club and the club should listen to the guys who were there, as this is really important.

“Rio Ferdinand, Roy Keane, Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, Sir Alex Ferguson… you need advice from these people.

“You cannot rebuild a club without knowledge.”

Garnacho, 20, who has one assist from United’s opening three games, found himself in hot water due to his social media activity last season.

Fans quickly spotted Garnacho had 'liked' the post before later backtracking

Fans quickly spotted Garnacho had ‘liked’ the post before later backtracking

Garnacho ‘liked’ a number of posts criticising Ten Hag after being substituted during a 2-2 draw with Bournemouth in April.

Ten Hag later revealed the young forward apologised for his behaviour.

“Alejandro is a young player and has to learn a lot,” Ten Hag said.

“He apologised for it and after that, we move on.”

Following Garnacho’s apology, he was rewarded with 90 minutes in United subsequent four Premier League matches and ended the season on a high.

He ended his club season by scoring in an FA Cup final win over Manchester City, and would go on to join Argentina’s squad for their triumphant Copa America campaign.

This season, Garnacho has started just one out of a possible three matches for Ten Hag, which may well explain his apparent frustrations.
