‘I like him’: PL legend’s Ange defence as Spurs’ transfer falls through amid injury crisis

Ange Postecoglou admits Tottenham’s “vicious cycle” of injuries has hampered his attempt to get the troubled club back on track.

Postecoglou is under severe pressure after a miserable run of seven Premier League games without a win, with six defeats in that dismal spell also triggering fan protests against chairman Daniel Levy.

Ahead of Sunday’s game at Brentford, Postecoglou’s side are languishing in 15th place, just eight points above the relegation zone.

The Australian earned a little breathing space on Thursday when a 3-0 win against Elfsborg booked Tottenham’s place in the Europa League last 16.

But Postecoglou is battling a lengthy injury list that threatens to stop the north Londoners ending their malaise.

Postecoglou was already without Dominic Solanke, Cristian Romero, Guglielmo Vicario, Brennan Johnson, Destiny Udogie, Wilson Odobert, Timo Werner and James Maddison.

Romanian defender Radu Dragusin became the latest to be bitten by the injury bug when he was forced off against Elfsborg, although centre-back Micky van de Ven played 45 minutes on his return from a hamstring problem.

United remain undefeated in group stage | 00:50

“We’ve had to deal with a real extreme situation, which unfortunately once we got hit, it is then very hard to rectify on the run,” Postecoglou told reporters on Friday.

“We obviously got some significant injuries early on, which hampered our progress, and then we had to rely on a small group of players to get us through and that then burdened them.

“It has been this vicious cycle. The volume of games that clubs are playing, we’ve been in an extreme situation but a lot of clubs are facing similarities in Europe.”

It is a vital week for Tottenham, who travel to Liverpool holding a 1-0 lead in the second leg of the League Cup semi-finals on Thursday before heading to Aston Villa in the FA Cup fourth round on February 9.

Injuries forced Postecoglou to turn to youth academy graduates Dane Scarlett, Mikey Moore and Damola Ajayi, who all scored their first goals for the club against Elfsborg.

Now the former Celtic boss is desperate to avoid any further fitness setbacks as he bids to end a Tottenham trophy drought stretching back to 2008.

“Every time I’ve seen the light at the end of the tunnel, it’s usually been an oncoming train,” he said.

“We seem to be losing players as we get them back. We don’t want to lose anyone else, but again, best laid plans.

Jovial Ange jokes before crucial goal | 00:57

“You can’t plan for these things. We’ve got a big week coming up, starting Sunday.

“We’re going to have to do it with this core group of players, so we’ve just got to be careful about how we go about it.”

Spurs’ terrible injury crisis has spurred the club’s usually frugal chairman, Daniel Levy, into action in the transfer market.

However, their attempt to strengthen the Australian’s options, and deepen his squad, have taken a major dent with Bayern Munich teenager Mathys Tel’s decision to reject a move to the club, according to Sky Sports.

A deal reportedly worth £50m had been struck between the two clubs for the highly promising Frenchman, whose game time has been limited since joining the German giants in 2022.

It is believed the French U-21 international has knocked back the chance to unite with Postecoglou in London in favour of a loan deal to one of Manchester United, Aston Villa, or Chelsea. Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli are also interested in the highly-rated attacker, who is capable of playing across the front line.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Transfer Show, Arsenal legend Paul Merson doesn’t believe Tel’s decision is a major blight on Spurs, given the disparity between Bayern’s position and Tottenham’s.

“I wouldn’t say it’s embarrassing for Spurs. He’s coming from Bayern Munich, he’s not coming from a lesser team. No disrespect to Tottenham, but he’s coming from a huge team. He’s got to get the right move,” Merson said.

Given injuries to Solanke, Odobert, Johnson, and Werner, as well as captain Heung-Min Son’s form struggles, Tel’s decision is a major blow for Spurs. However, Sky Sports are reporting the 19-year-old isn’t the only talent pursued by the club in the final days of the January window.

According to the publication, the club are in advanced talks with AC Milan to sign former Chelsea centre back Fikayo Tomori, a move that would bolster Postecoglou’s depleted backline options.

The 27-year-old, who was integral to Milan’s league title back in 2020-21, has struggled for minutes this season, having played just 826 for the Italian giants, who sit 7th in Serie A.

Despite this drop in game time, Tomori would be a worthwhile asset for a Spurs side who’ve utilised teenager holding midfielder Archie Gray at centre back at various points this season, with the five-time England international’s recovery pace a key part of his game.

However, according to Arsenal legend Ian Wright, a few new additions to Spurs’ squad mightn’t be the silver bullet many expect, given their current injury record.

“Even if they bought three players now, they might lose more,” Wright said on a recent episode of The Overlap.

Wright believes Tottenham’s loaded schedule, which sees them play four times in the next 10 days, the constant game time the likes of Son and Dejan Kulusevski have had to ground out, and the period of adjustment most new signings require, could lead to further players being sidelined.

Manchester United’s all-time leading goalscorer stressed the impact new faces can have on a squad, even if they don’t take the field.

“When a couple of new players come through, it gives everyone a lift,” the 39-year-old said.

While Postecoglou’s managerial future is on the line in the coming weeks, Rooney stated his wish for the Australian to maintain his post, regardless of the outcome of their next few games.

“I hope he survives. I like him. I like his demeanour. I think, how honest he is, sometimes you can be too honest, and sometimes that comes back to kill you,” he told The Overlap.

  • ‘Bittersweet moment’: Melbourne City captain Jamie Maclaren to farewell A-League

‘Bittersweet moment’: Melbourne City captain Jamie Maclaren to farewell A-League

An “emotional” Jamie Maclaren will depart the A-League at the end of Melbourne City’s finals campaign, with India mooted as the star striker’s likely destination.

City announced on Tuesday that Maclaren, the A-League’s all-time leading scorer with 154 goals from 232 appearances, was leaving the club to “pursue an opportunity” outside the A-League.

Sources have suggested that the 30-year-old marksman is headed for the Indian Super League to accept a deal far more lucrative than what City would have offered him to sign a new contract with the Melbourne club.

“It’s a bittersweet moment for me to leave the club that I’ve called home for the past 5½ years,” said Maclaren, who has netted 115 goals in 163 appearances in all competitions for City after joining them in January 2019 following stints in Europe with Darmstadt 98 (Germany) and Hibernian (Scotland).

“Driving in to (the club) today I was a little bit emotional. It’s been a long time. This place feels like home.

“(There) are a lot of good memories, (and) a lot of bad ones, but that’s part of being a team and a club that has such high standards.”

Four of Maclaren’s five A-League Golden Boot awards have come during his time with City, where he also was part of three premiership-winning outfits and the club’s 2021 championship-winning squad, although he didn’t play in City’s 3-1 grand final win over Sydney FC due to being in quarantine following Socceroos commitments in Asia.

He scored in City’s 1-0 weekend win over Western United to ensure the club would again be playing finals football.

However, the pressure of captaining City this season has seemed to have affected Maclaren, whose 10-goal haul is well below his tallies from recent years.

The former Perth Glory and Brisbane Roar attacker also lost his Socceroos place this season after not being named in Australia’s squad for the Asian Cup in January-February.

However, with two goals in his past three club matches, Maclaren has found form ahead of City’s A-League elimination final with arch rivals Melbourne Victory on Sunday at AAMI Park.

“It’s going to be a cracking game,” he said.

“We want the crowd to be there and be up and about.”

City’s director of football Michael Petrillo said Maclaren would leave the club as a “legend”.

“Jamie embodies everything we stand for as a club,” Petrillo said.

“He’s been an outstanding footballer for us and an exceptional role model for his teammates and young fans.

“On the pitch, his name will remain in the record books forever. Not only is he the league’s greatest ever goalscorer, but he also made an enormous contribution to our men’s team during their most successful period.”

Puskas contender stuns old side in all-time A-League thumping

Melbourne City midfielder Terry Antonis has scored one the greatest goals in A-League Men history on Tuesday night as his team destroyed Western Sydney by a record-equalling 7-0 at AAMI Park.

In the 82nd minute, Antonis spotted Wanderers goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas off his line, unloaded from the centre circle and fired it into the back of the net from 50 yards out, sparking wild celebrations and prompting Antonis to make a “call me” phone call gesture to Western Sydney boss Marko Rudan who used to coach him.

The result was Western Sydney’s biggest ever defeat and it was also the equal biggest margin in competition history. Naturally, it was also Melbourne’s equal biggest win, equalling their 8-1 demolition of Brisbane in December and their 7-0 romp over Victory in 2020-21.

On a night when speculation surrounding City legend Jamie Maclaren’s future intensified, his team made it even harder for him to return to the starting line-up.

For the first time in more than seven years, the competition’s all-time leading goalscorer started on the bench in consecutive A-League matches. It was the strongest indication yet that he might be headed for the AAMI Park exit door at season’s end, and possibly to incoming club Auckland for 2024-25.

While he was sitting on the pine, City ran riot without him, banging home four goals in 12 minutes in the first half, including a two-minute Tolgay Arslan brace, to embarrass a hopelessly disorganised Wanderers defence and seal the result before the break.

Maclaren came on in the 65th minute, and it took him 12 minutes to break his 10-game scoring drought. He replaced his precocious understudy Max Caputo who starred again with a goal and an assist.

Arslan opened up the scoring in the 30th minute when he got on the end of a pinpoint Steven Ugarkovic cross from the byline on the right and tapped it home into an empty net.

Two minutes later, James Jeggo pounced on a Dylan Scicluna turnover in the middle of the park and passed it to Arslan who cut through the visitors’ defence like a hot knife through butter and, with Western Sydney’s defenders all dropping off him, the German banged it past Thomas from 17 yards out with a gorgeous strike.

Socceroos gear up for WC qualifier clash | 01:19

The visitors’ pain continued in the 39th minute when Marin Jakolis deftly played through Caputo who crossed it past Thomas’ outstretched fingertips for Leo Natel to ram it home on the goal line.

And three minutes later, the chaos was complete when Ugarkovic and Jakolis combined to get it to Caputo who bisected Oscar Priestman and Alexander Bonetig and, from eight yards out, tucked it away into the far corner to make it 4-0.

In the 72nd minute, the hosts increased their lead when Antonis’ corner found an unmarked Nuno Reis who powerfully headed home his first A-League goal for Melbourne City.

The icing on the cake came five minutes later when Natel passed it to Maclaren who popped it home from six yards out after capitalising on a gorgeous first touch, and Antonis put the cherry on top with his worldy shortly after.

    RUDAN MAKES A STATEMENT

So disgusted was Rudan with his team’s first-half performance that, in an A-League first, he made the extraordinary move of burning all five of his substitutes at half-time.

On came Milos Ninkovic, Dylan Pierias, Nathan Barrie, Gabriel Cleur and Jack Clisby in place of Nicolas Milanovic, Lachlan Brook, Thomas Beadling, Aidan Simmons and Scicluna.

    CITY TAKE INITIATIVE

Just seven games out from the finals, the match was a crunch encounter for Western Sydney and Melbourne, who headed into the meeting in sixth and seventh spots respectively with just two points separating them.

But City appeared to be the only team who grasped the importance of the match, and after going winless in their previous five games (their worst run in five years), they have now won two games in the past four days to leapfrog the Wanderers into the top six.

Western Sydney now find themselves a point out of the top six after losing their last three matches – their longest barren streak under Rudan who must now find himself under some pressure.

  • ‘They’ve come from everywhere’: Cards galore after brawl as A-League clash descends into chaos

‘They’ve come from everywhere’: Cards galore after brawl as A-League clash descends into chaos

Central Coast’s A-League Men clash with Melbourne City in Gosford on Sunday night descended into chaos late in stoppage time when a wild brawl broke out, which saw almost every player from each side involved.

About 10 minutes after Mariners forward Angel Torres scored his 88th-minute winner to break City hearts and delivered the hosts a thrilling 2-1 win in scorching conditions, a clash between City’s Terry Antonis and Central Coast’s Jacob Farrell in the seventh minute of added time spark a huge melee.

In the wash-up, Central Coast’s Storm Roux, who was already substituted from the match, was sent off for his involvement from the bench, while his captain Danny Vukovic was also shown yellow. Antonis and his teammate Tolgay Arslan were also given yellow cards.

“They’ve come from everywhere here,” Paramount play-by-play commentator Robbie Thomson said.

“I spoke about the rivalry, there’s no love lost between these two sides.

“Now the City bench is coming … this is escalating.”

Former Mariners coach Phil Moss added: “Just when you thought the temperature was cooling down, it’s gone in exactly the opposite direction.

“Good luck dissecting all of this, because there were bodies everywhere. Both benches coming in.”

Mariners player Josh Nisbet was asked about the incident post-game.

“You can see the passion in the game, and that both teams needed the points,” he told Paramount.

“We all love ‘Faz’, so as soon as someone touches him, we better get in there.”

The incident capped off a frustrating match for Melbourne, who absolutely dominated the second half with 14 shots at goal to two and seven corners to one. The sustained pressure they applied to the Mariners defence saw them level proceedings in the 79th minute when Steven Ugarkovic blasted it home from the edge of the box, with the help of a deflection.

But nine minutes later, after accepting the set up from Jing Reec, Torres danced around Curtis Good, and coolly sent it past wrong-footed Melbourne goalkeeper Jamie Young to send Central Coast into the top four of the A-League Men ladder, in what was a cruel blow for City.

The hosts opened up the scoring in the 50th minute with a magnificently constructed team goal. Alou Kuol sent a sublimely weighted pass into the path of Josh Nisbet who didn’t have to break stride, and the latter cut it back to Christian Theoharous who sent it flying into the back of the net from 12 yards out.

All up, Melbourne had far more total shots (17-9) and corners (8-3), while they edged Central Coast in shots on target (6-5) as well as possession (56 per cent), but it wasn’t enough to take any points away from the match.

After losing their first four games, and dropping to the bottom of the ladder, the Mariners have now strung together nine consecutive league games without defeat, including six wins, to roar back into contention to defend their title.

Meanwhile, Melbourne missed a chance to re-enter the top four, and after copping back-to-back losses for the first time since October, they remain stuck in eighth spot and could drop to ninth on Tuesday night.

But the win came at a cost for Central Coast after Brad Tapp left the game in the 61st minute with what looked like recurrence of a knee injury, and in the 76th minute, Storm Roux also limped from the field with a possible foot issue.

    MARINERS WASTE CHANCES

After a largely uneventful opening half-hour, the hosts had two golden opportunities to take the lead in the 31st minute when Torres played Kuol through, but from six yards out, the latter failed to get it past Young who stayed big and executed a magnificent save. From the follow-up, Torres’ strike from 10 yards out cannoned into the crossbar, and moments later, Theoharous’ shot from 20 yards out was too tame.

Glory win on the road! | 00:55

In the 40th minute, the hosts looked destined to open the scoring again when Theoharous sprinted down the right and crossed it to Kuol in a very dangerous position, but City defender Jordon Hall was there to get his boot in and execute a sensational block of Kuol’s close-range shot to deny the Mariners the lead again.

Central Coast had to be content with a 0-0 stalemate at the break, but they only had to wait five minutes after half-time to grab the lead via Theoharous.

    TIDE TURNS CITY’S WAY

Melbourne almost equalised immediately when Andrew Nabbout crossed it beautifully to Jamie Maclaren, but the competition all-time leading goalscorer’s sliding shot from a few yards out at the back post was stopped brilliantly by Vukovic.

In the 63rd minute, Callum Talbot’s pinpoint pass into the area found Maclaren whose powerful strike was once again thwarted by Vukovic. Shortly after, Arslan cut a swath through the Mariners defence, after receiving a delightful backheel pass from Leo Natel, but the German star’s shot on goal was stopped by another outstanding Vukovic save.

City finally scored in the 79th minute courtesy of Ugarkovic and came close to grabbing the lead a few minutes later when Maclaren’s deft chip over Vukovic tantalisingly floated onto the roof of the net. But Torres would have the final say.

  • Matildas coach reveals ‘massive’ Kerr call as star striker explains quiet bench moment

Matildas coach reveals ‘massive’ Kerr call as star striker explains quiet bench moment

Australia’s coach hailed Sam Kerr for giving the team momentum at a crucial time in their Women’s World Cup quarter-final win over France on Saturday, with the star Chelsea striker admitting it was tough being a super-sub.

Kerr played for 65 minutes in Brisbane, thrown into the action for her longest stint since picking up a calf injury before the opening game of the tournament.

Her entrance was greeted by roars from the crowd and she lifted her side as they held France goalless through 120 minutes before a breathless penalty shootout that the co-hosts won 7-6.

Kerr duly scored one of the crucial spot kicks.

“The biggest decision to be honest was when to bring Sam in. It was a massive decision even before the game to leave her on the bench,” said Tony Gustavsson of Australia’s all-time leading goalscorer.

“And then it was the timing. I was informed that she had limited minutes today.

“And then we needed to put extra time into consideration. That was a massive decision to get right. When Sam came in we really had them on the hook. We really got the momentum, and from the fans as well.”

Kerr said she never expected to start against France, but suggested she would be ready to play a full game in the semi-finals.

“When I hurt my calf the plan was always to be ready for semi-final time so I could have (started) but who knows what would have happened,” she said.

“I played 65 minutes and feel better for it and I’ll have more training under my belt and feel ready to go now.”

Starting from the bench is not something Kerr is used to, for either Australia or Chelsea, and it has given her a new appreciation for the job substitutes do.

“I tried to bring energy when I came on, I tried to lift the girls and I kind of think the momentum swung a bit in our favour and that’s what you have to do as a sub, to come on and just settle in and do your job,” said Australia’s captain.

“But it’s not easy, I don’t envy people who are super-subs because it’s an amazing job they do. I just tried my best.”

Cameras later caught Kerr in a quiet moment on the Matildas bench after Cortnee Vine sent Australia through to the quarter-finals.

‘Complete no-brainer’: Ex-England star hails ‘unexpected moment of logic’ as Chelsea hero nears return

Former England international Jamie Redknapp believes it’s a “complete no-brainer” for Chelsea to appoint Frank Lampard on an interim basis until the end of the season.

According to several reports, the Blues legend is set to return for a second managerial stint at Stamford Bridge.

Lampard, who was sacked earlier this season by Everton, was dismissed by Chelsea in 2021 after 18 months in charge.

Sky Sports and The Athletic reported that the club and Lampard are in advanced talks with an eye to the former England international being installed in time to take charge of Saturday’s trip to Wolves.

Redknapp was a clear fan of the move and used the example of Roberto Di Matteo at Chelsea in 2012 to highlight what Lampard’s possible impact could look like.

“He’s got unfinished business at Chelsea,” Redknapp told Sky Sports.

“He loves the club and nobody knows it better than him. I think this is a complete no-brainer.

“Stranger things have happened in football.”

The Telegraph’s Jeremy Wilson described Lampard’s impending appointment as “an unexpected moment of logic” from Chelsea’s board.

“Chelsea clearly now wish to conduct an in-depth recruitment process of the very best coaches in Europe and, with their options only likely to widen over the next two months, why dive in and risk another costly error,” Wilson wrote.

Chelsea sacked Graham Potter on Sunday after a disastrous run of form that has left the club 11th in the Premier League despite spending over $AUD926m on new players in their first season under new owners.

However, they are through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League and travel to defending champions Real Madrid for the first leg of their last-eight tie in seven days’ time.

Lampard was in attendance for Chelsea’s 0-0 draw at home to Liverpool on Tuesday and is the man the club’s American owners have turned to in hope of inspiring a short-term turnaround.

In 13 years as a Chelsea player, Lampard won three Premier League titles, the Champions League and remains the club’s all-time leading goalscorer.

The 44-year-old led Chelsea to fourth in the Premier League and the FA Cup final in his first season in charge at Stamford Bridge.

But he was sacked midway through his second season and Chelsea went on to win the Champions League that year under Thomas Tuchel.

Lampard helped keep Everton in the Premier League last season, but was sacked in January with the Toffees second bottom of the table.

Recently sacked Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann and former Barcelona and Spain coach Luis Enrique are among the leading candidates to be appointed Chelsea’s next permanent manager.

Singer Ellynora breaks down in tears and apologises for ‘butchering’ God Save the King before England win

The singer accused of butchering the England national anthem ahead of the game against Italy has apologised.

Ellynora left fans cringing with her rendition of God Save the King before kick-off, The Sun reports.

The performer fumbled her words and appeared to sing the first line twice, as you can see in the video above, leading the home crowd to boo loudly throughout the performance.

Ellynora was also seen putting her finger to her earpiece at the start of the anthem.

And the pop singer has revealed a sound issue at the stadium was to blame for her performance.

She broke down in tears in an interview with the Daily Mail, saying: “I’m just so angry with what happened because I wanted it to be perfect but what happened wasn’t my fault.

“I’m more of a pop artist but at the ground there was a sound issue.

“I had rehearsed the anthem twice the day before the match and then on the night three times but when it came to the actual performance, I had a problem with my earpiece.

“I had the music in my ear and then it stopped and started again, and I was hearing it twice, so it meant I was out of sync, and it was hard for me to catch up.

“I really tried my best to solve the problem but there was nothing I could do and I’m so angry about it.

“I was trying to adjust my singing to catch up with the anthem in the stadium, but it was too late.”

However, immediately after her rendition Ellynora shared a cheeky post that seemed to indicate there was nothing wrong.

She wrote: “Hope you enjoyed my gift England.”

Yet her performance was so bad it drew a bewildered look from England pair Kyle Walker and Jude Bellingham, while Bukayo Saka looked concerned as he glanced in Ellynora’s direction.

Saka has been one of the standout performers in Arsenal’s climb to the top of the Premier League this season and the forward was at his very best once again at Wembley.

It was Saka’s pinpoint cross that allowed Kane to give England the lead in the first half as the Three Lions captain extended his record tally for his country.

Kane wrote himself into the record books against Italy, scoring his 54th international goal to surpass Wayne Rooney as England’s all-time leading goalscorer.

Surrounded by his wife and children, the Tottenham striker was presented with a golden boot before kick-off, but quickly got back down to business with goal number 55.

Kane had been more instrumental than most in England’s progress to major tournaments in his career, scoring 34 times in just 29 qualifying group matches.

Aged 29, Kane is at his peak, while the 21-year-old Saka is only just starting to explore the vast depths of his potential, as he showed with his superb long-range goal.

“Once he receives inside and turns you know there’s a chance that might happen. It’s a top-level finish,” Southgate said.

“That’s really the ruthless part he’s added to his game in the last 18 months.

“There were times where you weren’t certain he was going to finish, and now you’ve got real confidence when he’s through on goal.

“Everyone can see technical quality. It is the mentality that is the outstanding part.”

England’s 2-1 victory over European champions Italy on Thursday – their first success on Italian soil since 1961 – was a significant statement of intent in their bid to finally win a first major trophy since 1966.

Dismissing Ukraine in businesslike fashion ensured the positive mood will continue while England wait to resume their qualifying campaign against Malta and North Macedonia in June.

“I’m really pleased. We made a difficult game look straightforward,” Southgate said.

“To back up the Italy result was important but there is still room to grow.”

It was an emotional occasion for more than 1000 Ukrainians and their host families, who were invited to the game as special guests of England’s Football Association having been displaced by the war with Russia.

Showing solidarity with Ukraine, England’s players joined their opponents before kick-off behind a Ukrainian flag with “Peace” written across it.

“It was amazing to see so many Ukrainian fans here,” Southgate said.

“We knew it was going to be emotional and we all have tremendous sympathy with what’s going on. Everyone’s supporting Ukraine.”

Beaten in the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and the European Championship final two years ago, England are still chasing their trophy holy grail.

In their first home game since last year’s World Cup campaign ended in a painful quarter-final defeat against France, Southgate’s men showed their hunger has not been dulled by so many agonising near-misses.

England had been patient against Ukraine’s massed defence and, while their build-up might have looked ponderous at times, it was a steady approach that paid off in the 37th minute.

Saka whipped a perfectly-weighted cross towards the far post and when Oleksandr Karavaev couldn’t get enough power on his attempted clearance, Kane stuck out a boot to deflect it in from close range.

Having provided the assist for Kane, Saka got on the scoresheet himself three minutes later.

Taking possession 20 yards from goal, the Arsenal forward easily evaded Mykola Matviyenko and curled a sublime strike over Anatoliy Trubin into the far corner for a jaw-dropping goal that brought the previously subdued Wembley crowd to their feet.

Kane clinches record as England take down big rivals; Ronaldo still scoring for fun — Qualifying wrap

Harry Kane became England’s all-time leading goalscorer as the Three Lions enjoyed a perfect start to Euro 2024 qualifying by winning 2-1 away to Italy on Thursday, as Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice in his record 197th cap in Portugal’s 4-0 win over Liechtenstein.

Kane netted his 54th goal for England in his 81st international appearance from the penalty spot in Naples after Declan Rice had fired the visitors into an early lead.

The England captain moves clear of the record mark he had shared with Wayne Rooney.

Gareth Southgate’s men gained some measure of revenge for their defeat by the Azzurri in the Euro 2020 final.

In their first match since bowing out in agonising fashion to France in the World Cup quarter-finals, England were dominant in the first 45 minutes.

Rice rifled home his third international goal on 13 minutes after Italy failed to clear a corner.

Another set-piece led to Kane’s record-breaking moment as Giovanni Di Lorenzo handled inside the area.

The Tottenham striker banished the memories of his missed penalty late on against France in Doha by sending Gianluigi Donnarumma the wrong way.

But Italy rallied after the break when Argentine-born striker Mateo Retegui fired home on his international debut.

England were forced to see out the final 10 minutes a man down after two quickfire yellow cards for Luke Shaw, but they held out for their first win away to Italy since 1961.

In the other game in Group C, North Macedonia beat Malta 2-1.

    RONALDO MARKS HISTORIC NIGHT

Ronaldo marked Roberto Martinez’s bow as Portugal boss with another historic night in Lisbon.

The 38-year-old, who was dropped from the Portuguese starting XI during the World Cup, set a new record for men’s international appearances by passing the previous mark of 196 caps held by Kuwait’s Bader Al-Mutawa.

Joao Cancelo fired home the opening goal after just eight minutes but it was not until Bernardo Silva doubled Portugal’s lead early in the second half that the floodgates opened.

Ronaldo made it 3-0 from the penalty spot before blasting home a free-kick from the edge of the area for his 120th international goal.

In the same group, Rade Krunic scored twice as Bosnia and Herzegovina swept aside Iceland 3-0.

But Slovakia, who have qualified for the last two Euros, were held 0-0 at home by Luxembourg.

Euro 2020 semi-finalists Denmark bounced back from their disappointing early exit at the World Cup to beat Finland 3-1 in Copenhagen.

Atalanta forward Rasmus Hojlund scored a hat-trick for the Danes on his first start for his country.

Elsewhere in Group H, Dion Charles scored twice as Northern Ireland won 2-0 in San Marino, while Slovenia came from behind to win 2-1 away to Kazakhstan.
