Ange safe for now… as ‘embarrassing’ Spurs’ rescue plan revealed, replacements touted – UK View

Ange Postecoglou’s job is seemingly safe for now — though Spurs’ reported rescue package for their Australian manager is meagre.

Reports out of the British press suggest that Tottenham are sticking with the Australian as they focus their energies on signing “at least one player” before the January transfer window is shut.

It appeared as if Postecoglou’s time may have been up after their 2-1 home defeat to relegation-threatened Leicester City, who had lost seven straight matches coming in, on Sunday.

Spurs sit a lowly 15th on the Premier League table, winless in their last seven matches and picking up just four points in their last ten league fixtures.

The faithful are growing restless with Postecoglou stopping to express his displeasure at one fan who repeatedly shouted “we’re going down with you” as he headed down the race with boos echoing after the full-time whistle.

Postecoglou then responded to a question about whether he thinks he will still be at the helm when Spurs’ plethora of injured stars return to the park, with “who knows”.

It was the first time the former Socceroos and Celtic boss and publicly showed the writing may be on the wall, especially given Tottenham’s history of discarding managers.

Chairman Daniel Levy has had 16 managers in his 24 years in charge.

But with Tottenham’s injury crisis showing few signs of improving, Levy is reportedly changing tack and giving Postecoglou more time than he afforded the likes of Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte when things went pear shaped.

Tottenham’s injury list has been in double digits for several weeks with Postecoglou unable to fill his entire bench against Leicester as James Maddison joined the casualty ward.

Goal scorer Richarlison also should have come off at half time with a groin issue, while the manager admitted Pape Sarr should not have played after picking up an injury in their mid-week Europa League victory against German outfit Hoffenheim.

With the medical team working over time, the lack of activity in the current transfer window has been perplexing.

Goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky arrived from Slavia Prague for £12.5 million to cover for first-choice shot stopper Guglielmo Vicario who fractured his right ankle in Spurs’ 4-0 win at Manchester City in November.

But Kinsky is the only January signing so far, despite Postecoglou crying out for more outfield talent, especially in defence.

The most frustrating thing for Tottenham fans is that they have the money to chase new signings.

The Mirror’s Conor Mummery wrote that “Spurs have one of the lowest wages to turnover ratio in the league at 42 per cent. They have the biggest PSR [profit and sustainability rules] headroom in the league.

“And Daniel Levy and Co have sat on their hands all month and watched their club slide down the league table, picking up more injuries along the way with Dominic Solanke, Destiny Udogie and Yves Bissouma joining the likes of Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Guglielmo Vicario on the sidelines.”

    Ange Postecoglou’s fiery fan interaction | 00:20

Those figures are why the fans have turned on Levy, and it appears he believes he would do further damage to his reputation by sacking another manager at this point in time.

Football.London’s Tottenham correspondent Alasdair Gold shed light on how strained the relationship has become between the owner and the fan base.

“It’s embarrassing no doubt for Levy to hear the loudest chants yet in the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – his crowning glory – from thousands of supporters for him to leave his position at the helm of the club. The post-match music was cranked up loudly – Spurs fans have heard that before – but it could not drown out the chants during the match,” Gold wrote.

“It’s embarrassing that the club are currently in danger of repeating those two critical transfer-less windows that sucked the life out of the club and the manager in Mauricio Pochettino’s final full season, seemingly learning not a single lesson from a period that ended their hopes of building on what the Argentine had created and they’ve been flailing since. Recent reports detailing the far lower percentage Spurs spend on salaries compared to revenue in relation to all of their rivals, which will only have dropped further this season, have not exactly screamed ambition from the owners to the fanbase.

“It’s embarrassing for the club to see those couple of banners in the south stand. One read: “24 years, 16 managers, one trophy – time for change”. Another proclaimed: “Our game is about glory, Levy’s game is about greed”. That video footage appeared to show stewards trying to take down the first banner is equally embarrassing.”

In an attempt to ease some of the tension, Tottenham are reportedly showing heavy interest in a highly touted 18-year-old who has burst on the Premier League scene this season, and a 24-year-old Manchester United academy product who has found his way in France.

But neither deal may be done until the summer.

“Southampton winger Tyler Dibling and Lille midfielder Angel Gomes are two players Spurs have held talks over as they attempt to set up deals for the summer window, and they are also trying to secure at least one new outfield signing this month,” Matt Law, football news correspondent for The Telegraph, wrote.

“While Postecoglou has been relatively calm about Tottenham’s lack of business so far, it is understood there is frustration from staff behind the scenes that outfield players have not been brought in earlier to try to alleviate some of the Australian’s problems.

“Tottenham have been desperate to avoid rushing into a decision on Postecoglou’s future and the focus has been trying to support him, but pressure is growing following successive defeats by Everton and Leicester, and with his team stuck in 15th place, eight points above the relegation zone.

“It is understood that Spurs are understanding of the injury crisis Postecoglou has faced and believe that changing the manager again would leave the club in a difficult position as they attempt to build something lasting.

“Furthermore, the prospect of having to finish a third season with Ryan Mason in caretaker charge would be hugely embarrassing and provoke more criticism towards Levy.”

The allure of some much-needed silverware is seemingly also keeping Postecoglou safe in the short-term.

Mid-week fixtures are undeniably hurting Tottenham’s depleted squad’s ability to back up time and time again for league encounters, but they remain alive in the League Cup, FA Cup and Europa League.

In fact, they lead Liverpool 1-0 after the first leg of their League Cup semi-final with the second leg to be played at Anfield next month.

They are sixth on the Europa League with a win at home against Swedish side IF Elsborg on Friday morning Australian time in their final league phase match guaranteeing them automatic passage to the Round of 16.

Meanwhile, an FA Cup fourth round tie away at Aston Villa also awaits next week.

Three opportunities remain for Postecoglou to fulfill his proclamation that he always wins a trophy in his second year in charge of a team.

He did it in the A-League. He did it with the Socceroos. He did it in Japan with Yokohama F. Marinos. He did with Scottish giants Celtic and despite things looking so bleak in North London, he remains optimistic that he can do it again.

Around the world, he has trophies in the bank and is not interested in trying to assure others that he can manage a football team

“It doesn’t really come into my consciousness about trying to convince people. I have been around long enough to know that some will just judge on where we are at at the moment and rightly so in some respects. It’s not good enough,” Postecoglou explained after the loss to Leicester.

“If people want to put context to that, they can. If not, so be it. From my point of view, I’m still very much stuck on the fact that the players are just giving everything they can.

“Even one more player coming in, just in the short term, will give us an opportunity at least to navigate these last 10 days to two weeks of what’s been a really hard slog for this group of players.

“They did on Thursday night (against Hoffenheim), they did today. There are probably at least two who shouldn’t have been out there. They were just desperate to try to turn our fortunes around.

“Hopefully over the next 10 days to two weeks we should get some significant players back which I think will help this group a lot. It will give them the boost they need.

“We have still got some fantastic opportunities this year to make an impact in the second half of this year and I’m sure that will happen.”

Whenever Postecoglou’s time is up at Tottenham, things may look brighter.

The Mirror’s football writers identified Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna, Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola, Brentford’s Thomas Frank and Fulham’s Marco Silva as potential replacements for Postecoglou at Spurs, but they would just be getting themselves onto the same merry-go-round.

Moving on from Spurs has reaped rewards for previous managers with The Guardian’s Jonathan Wilson writing that Postecoglou may have more success elsewhere to look forward to.

“The good news for Ange Postecoglou is that it seems relatively straightforward to recover from being Tottenham manager: his two immediate predecessors, Antonio Conte and Nuno Espírito Santo, are top of Serie A with Napoli and third in the Premier League with Nottingham Forest respectively,” Wilson wrote.

“As the banner unveiled on Sunday by Spurs fans during the defeat by Leicester read: “24 years, 16 managers, one trophy”. Nobody really looks at Tottenham any more and thinks the problem is the manager.

‘Who knows’: Ange admits the end may be near as horror Spurs loss ends with angry fan clash

Postecoglou’s side crashed to a sixth defeat from their last seven Premier League matches to increase the pressure on the under-fire Australian.

Richarlison’s 33rd-minute header gave Tottenham hope of a first top-flight win since December 15.

But Jamie Vardy levelled for Leicester less than 60 seconds after half-time before Bilal El Khannouss fired the winner four minutes later.

Furious Tottenham fans called for chairman Daniel Levy to quit throughout the match, while boos greeted full-time whistle after Postecoglou was jeered for substituting Richarlison.

Tottenham are languishing in 15th place, just eight points above the relegation zone.

Postecoglou claimed his injury-hit squad — deprived of 10 players at present — are still behind him, but the former Celtic boss conceded he could not guarantee he would still be around when the walking wounded eventually return.

“Who knows. I reckon there is probably a fair chunk that will say ‘no’,” he said.

“When you are the manager of a football club, you can be very vulnerable and isolated. I don’t feel that.

“I feel like this group of players, not for me, are giving everything for the club. I have a group of staff that is really committed. I focus on that.”

A 3-2 win at Hoffenheim in the Europa League on Thursday kept Tottenham on track for the last 16, while they hold a 1-0 lead in the League Cup semi-final against Liverpool ahead of the second leg at Anfield in February.

    – ‘Very committed’ –

Postecoglou’s hopes of fulfilling his boast that he always wins a trophy in his second season lie with those competitions and the FA Cup.

But, after a run of one win in 11 league games, climbing away from the relegation zone is essential if Postecoglou is to survive the storm raging around his club.

“I really believe in this group of players. Even today, what I asked of them, some of the performances were outstanding considering what they’ve been through,” he said.

“To me that’s all positive, but ultimately, the fact that we’ve lost another game of football, the focus is on that.

“I have felt all along that the players are still very committed to what we’re doing. That’s important to me because I firmly believe in it.

“This is probably as low as we’ve been so far this year but I still think that in these last three months we can do something really special and I think these players believe that.

“Right now it’s very hard to visualise that when you think of the current circumstances we’re in.”

First-choice defenders Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven returned to training this week, while Tottenham continue to chase additions in the transfer window.

“You just have to look at our absences today and they’ll all be back,” Postecoglou added.

“Even missing Madders (James Maddison) today, he was so good the other night.

“All these little things that are not allowing us to get any momentum, I’m sure will change and when they change, I’m really confident we can make an impact.”

    – Son slams ‘sloppy’ Spurs –

Son Heung-min slammed Tottenham’s lack of focus after Sunday’s “painful” 2-1 defeat against lowly Leicester increased the pressure on under-fire boss Ange Postecoglou.

Whether Postecoglou can survive much longer in a dismal second season in charge remains to be seen, but the Australian’s cause wasn’t helped by a scathing assessment of their performance from South Korea forward Son.

“It is very painful. Especially when you’re winning at half-time and conceding two goals in a short period of time. It let us down and is a very frustrating afternoon,” the Tottenham captain said.

“We can’t just say tiredness because we just came out of the second half. Maybe it was a little bit sloppy.

“It is just a lack of concentration and a bit of sloppiness and in the Premier League table any team can punish us.

“It was not good enough and sometimes we made the wrong decision in the final moment. It is very disappointing to not get three points and to concede goals like this.”

The prospect of Tottenham dropping into the second tier is unthinkable for fans who last saw their club play at that level in 1977-78.

Asked if Tottenham could be dragged into a relegation battle, Son said: “It is definitely not good enough. We’ve had way too many losses, but there are still a lot of games remaining and we’ll have a lot of players back.”

Tottenham are dangerously close to being sucked into the relegation battle and trips to Brentford and Aston Villa in their next two league games — either side of a League Cup semi-final second leg clash with Liverpool — could decide the Australian’s fate.

“It is a disappointing result, but at the same time I can’t ask anymore from this group of players. Some of them aren’t 100 percent but they are trying their hardest,” Postecoglou said.

“Things just aren’t falling for us. It is not an atmosphere where it is easy at the moment. We’ve got to get through this as united as possible.”

Tottenham hold a 1-0 advantage from the first leg against Liverpool and a Wembley appearance could buy Postecoglou time to get his team back on track.

With 14 players absent for Thursday’s Europa League win at Hoffenheim, Tottenham’s injury crisis has led to criticism of Postecoglou’s tactics and the level of intensity in training.

The former Celtic boss accepts the blame for the rash of injuries, but his claims that Tottenham remain on the right path under his leadership look more questionable with each woeful result that edges him closer to the axe.

While Postecoglou fights to save his job, Leicester manager Ruud Van Nistelrooy can breathe a little easier over his own future.

Van Nistelrooy, who replaced Steve Cooper in December, had presided over seven successive league defeats before their much-needed success against Tottenham.

Leicester are now one place and one point above the relegation zone and Van Nistelrooy said: “It’s a massive win. The players are buying into it. I can only be very proud of this team.” On a filthy, rain-lashed afternoon, a protest banner against Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy was unveiled by fans before kick-off with the slogan “24 years, 16 managers, 1 trophy – time for change”.

    – Penalty controversy –

Brentford benefitted from penalty controversy to beat Crystal Palace 2-1 at Selhurst Park.

Thomas Frank’s team earned a 66th minute penalty when Marc Guehi made a hash of clearing and the panicked Maxence Lacroix fouled Nathan Collins.

Bryan Mbeumo’s spot-kick hit the post, but Palace’s reprieve was short-lived as VAR ruled Guehi had encroached before the shot.

The Brentford forward gratefully accepted his second chance by sending Palace keeper Dean Henderson the wrong way for his 14th goal this season.

Kevin Schade netted in the 80th minute for Brentford and Palace winger Romain Esse came off the bench to score with his first touch on his debut five minutes later.

Later on Sunday, troubled Manchester United travel to Fulham, while Aston Villa drew 1-1 at home to West Ham.

Socceroos hopeful Thomas Waddingham produced a Portsmouth debut he’ll never forget after the striker scored for the Championship club.

Waddingham, who only completed his transfer to Portsmouth from the Brisbane Roar last week, came off the bench in the 57th minute and slammed one home from close range in the third minute of added time as Pompey slumped to a 5-1 defeat to West Bromwich Albion.

“I’m really pleased for him,” Portsmouth coach John Mousinho said after the game.

“For him to come on and make an impact so quickly, I think he’ll be absolutely thrilled.

“To get a taste of the level as well is probably a really, really important thing.

“He probably could’ve had a couple and, yeah, he took his goal well.”

The goal continues the 19-year-old’s incredible rise after he found the back of the net 15 times in 40 appearances for the Roar across the A-League and Australia Cup before Portsmouth came calling. Waddingham, a product of the Roar’s NPL program, only made his debut for Brisbane in August of 2023.

While it’s still early days for Waddingham in England, the fact the forward was not only included in a matchday squad so soon after his arrival but also got on the field for just over half an hour, speaks volumes about the regard in which he is held at Fratton Park.

The speed with which the Cairns born product has been thrown into the first team, while still a teenager, is slightly unusual for Australian players making their way to the second-tier Championship.

If he’s able to continue to feature for Portsmouth it could provide a somewhat unlikely answer to one of the most pressing questions facing Socceroos coach Tony Popovic ahead of two crucial World Cup qualifiers in March against Indonesia and China.

Popovic lacks depth in the striking role with Kusini Yengi, who is also on the books of Portsmouth, not expected back from a knee injury until late February, 34-year-old Mitch Duke scoring just three-times in 20-games in green and gold since the start of 2023 and Apostolos Stamatelopoulos continuing to struggle with a calf injury after a rich run of form at Motherwell in Scotland. 31-year-old Adam Taggart is trying to make a late run with three goals in his last six games for Perth Glory.

Even if Yengi is integrated straight back in Portsmouth’s first team following the completion of his rehabilitation, he’ll still be a little short of match fitness ahead of the clash with Patrick Kluivert’s Indonesia in Sydney on March 20. It leaves the door ajar for a new name.

In an expansive interview with reporters last week Popovic laid bare what it would take for players like Waddingham to thrive after making the move to Europe.

“Physically the demands are extremely high and what you do one day in training; that’s expected every single day and if you can do that, well then you can make the jump,” Popovic said.

The Socceroos boss is currently keeping an eye on a talented crop of young strikers, including Archie Goodwin, Jed Drew and Noah Botic, who are turning in impressive performances in the A-League, but Waddingham could pull away from the trio in the pecking order with a big few weeks.

“Now the question is, in three or four years’ time, can we be watching one of them playing in the bigger leagues in Europe? That is the question,” Popovic said when asked about Goodwin, Drew and Botic.

“Can they take their game to another level? The level they are at now is not good enough to play in Europe. That’s just the reality.”

Waddingham has shown his level is good enough to play in Europe and if he can back it up then he would’ve formed a strong case for a call-up to the Socceroos.

Whether they have held too many meetings, or too few, and the length of the meetings. The content of training sessions and how messages are delivered during those sessions … they all form part of the discussions at Football Australia’s new headquarters in Sydney.

Popovic, who took charge of the side for the first time during the October window last year, has six points from four games in charge; which sees the Socceroos sitting in second place in Group C during the third round of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup in North America. Everyone involved knows staying there for four more games will deliver automatic qualification for football’s showpiece event. Yet failure to do so will force the side into the fourth and possibly fifth rounds of qualifying, where the path to the first ever 48-team World Cup gets slimmer and slimmer.

In two months, the wild ride to the biggest-ever edition of the tournament resumes. Indonesia, with newly installed coach Patrick Kluivert (yes, the Dutch legend) at the helm, travel to Sydney; where anything less than three points for the hosts will set alarm bells ringing.

It’s no wonder Popovic is looking into every crevasse to ensure nothing gets missed.

While discussing intricate details this week, Popovic also chose to address something a little larger.

Asked about one-time wonderkid Daniel Arzani and where he was at in his journey, the Socceroos boss lined up the Melbourne Victory winger like he did to opponents during his glittering playing career.

“I know Daniel well and he’s got potential,” Popovic started, while shifting in his seat.

“We talk about him with potential and I think we’ve been talking about that since he was 18.”

Arzani has carried the tag of “the next big thing” in Australian football since bursting onto the scene in 2018 with a flurry of dribbles, assists, goals and awards for Melbourne City in the A-League.

His dazzling feet, smart decision-making and ability to glide past defenders earned him a shock spot in Bert van Marwijk’s Socceroos squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where he came on as a second-half substitute in group stage games against France, Demark and Peru in a side that exited the tournament with two defeats and a draw.

A transfer from Melbourne City to Manchester City followed straight after the tournament and he was loaned to Scottish giants Celtic after barely having time to unpack his bags. After a few false dawns since the era of the golden generation, it appeared Australian football had finally (no, really) found its next big thing; only for an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury on his Celtic debut to send the trajectory of Arzani’s career on another path.

Loan spells in the Netherlands, Denmark and Belgium followed, before he landed back in the A-League with Macarthur after a four-year spell that felt more like a cyclone than sport.

A move to Melbourne Victory a year later, with Popovic then at the helm, saw Arzani rediscover some of his best form.

Now 26, the winger might feel singled out by what his former club boss, now in charge of the national side, shared next; though it’s nothing Popovic hasn’t told Arzani to his face, and really about something bigger than one player.

It is about the clamour for a player with Arzani’s skillset – and there have been several over the years – to be given every opportunity to shine even if they might not be ready. It’s about the desperation from fans to see the national side play a brand of football that you might find on a street in any city in Brazil. Adjacent to that noise is a coach who sees every minute of every game, training session and moment in between, with and without the ball. Instead of flashy social media clips, they form a fuller picture. Perspective is everything.

Daniel Arzani (2nd L) isn’t at the top of Tony Popovic’s selection list currently.Source: Getty Images

Arzani has seven Socceroos appearances to his name. Six of those came prior to his ACL tear in 2018. If not for that misfortune, he’d probably have many more caps on his resume, but good form with Victory saw him picked for the final window of the second round of qualifying in June last year. He’d miss selection for the first window of the third round in September – which turned out to be Graham Arnold’s last in charge before stepping away – but Popovic re-ignited the relationship in October.

What he saw left him underwhelmed and Arzani didn’t get on the field.

“When he doesn’t play everyone questions why he doesn’t play, but he needs to raise his level,” Popovic said bluntly.

“Doing one good dribble or doing one good trick or setting up one goal should not be enough to play for the Socceroos.”

From the outside, and with goals hard to come by during a difficult qualifying campaign, a player like Arzani would appear to be the perfect answer with dribbles, tricks and assists.

But Popovic chose to lay bare the other side of what you could call the ‘next big thing’ conundrum.

“It wasn’t good enough in October,” Popovic said referring to Arzani’s efforts away from the spotlight.

“His level was really poor in training. Now maybe for him it’s OK, but it’s not enough, so every player needs to raise their level.”

A similar weight of expectation fell on the young shoulders of striker Garang Kuol, now struggling to break through at Premier League side Newcastle United after transferring from the Central Coast Mariners, and another winger in Nestory Irankunda.

Popovic on the hunt for Aussie talent | 01:00

Without the monumental injury setback, Irankunda’s footballing story and that of Arzani’s isn’t too different.

A kid who bursts onto the scene with breathtaking skill in the A-League, followed by a call-up to the national team while still a teenager and then a move to a mega-club that seemed before its time.

German giants Bayern Munich came calling for 18-year-old Irankunda. The former Adelaide United star has been on the right and wrong ends of selection calls when it comes to the Socceroos as well, with first Arnold and then Popovic having to defend themselves in the court of public opinion for not picking a player on the books of one of the biggest clubs in the world.

In search of senior minutes, after being part of the youth team set-up at Bayern, Irankunda recently secured a loan move to Swiss Super League club Grasshoppers — but Popovic insists that might not be enough to earn a recall in March.

“Just playing a game because someone has got some minutes at Grasshoppers, for example, that can’t be enough,” Popovic said.

“They need to be at elite level at Grasshoppers, then they are elite for the Socceroos and then they can help us get in the top two.

“In our last two World Cups we went through the play-off system, but we keep expecting to make top two.

“That’s good, but if we expect to come in the top two then we must raise the level, we must raise the bar.

“Your expectation and my expectation should be higher because history shows we don’t do that often. We don’t go automatically to World Cups, but that is something we should aspire to. We shouldn’t shy away from that.”

Nestory Irankunda needs to be playing at a high level with his new loan club, Tony Popovic says.Source: Getty Images

Not picking very good players is an odd way, on the surface, to solve that problem, but Popovic clearly thinks betting the farm on human highlight reels isn’t the answer. The “expectation,” in his words, needs to be higher and only “elite” commitment to everything the coach sees as sacred is likely to be rewarded with regular minutes.

Popovic has spoken multiple times about his admiration for Japanese football, but also his desire for Australia to match and then overtake their regional rivals.

The gap to Japan, who lead Group C, is nine points. The Samurai Blue have won five of their six games in this phase to be on 16 points, which is the joint-highest total across the three groups with Iran. One more win from four remaining fixtures will ensure they seal automatic qualification. That is certainly something to be envious of.

Japan, from Popovic’s perspective, are the current standard bearers and he believes its possible for Australia to “raise the bar.”

In the coach’s eyes, Australian football should hold every player, even the absurdly talented ones, to the highest standard. If Popovic can find a way to marry that talent to his standards, then something special is truly possible.

‘Club of my life’: Teenage wunderkind’s huge reveal… and the $1.6b price tag placed on him

Football’s hottest young talent is going nowhere, with Barcelona wunderkind Lamine Yamal saying he will sign a new contract with the Spanish giants soon.

The 17-year-old has pledged his long-term future to the Catalan club despite massive interest from French titans PSG and Barcelona being embroiled in financial controversy.

Yamal burst onto the scene as a key cog of the Spanish side that won last year’s Euros.

He became the youngest ever player to feature in the tournament at just 16, and the youngest ever goal scorer when he curled an absolute stunner into the top corner in the champion’s 2-1 semi-final win against France.

His left-footed strike from outside the box also won goal of the tournament.

More than a year earlier, he made his first team debut for Barcelona as a 15-year-old after coming up through the club’s academy, and the records have continued to tumble in club football.

In October he became the youngest ever player to score in El Classico history as he found the back of the net in Barca’s 4-0 win against Real Madrid.

He scored again on his return to the side from an ankle injury in their 2-0 Spanish Super Cup semi-final win against Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday to take his season tally to seven goals and 12 assists from 22 games.

So, it’s clear to see why the Parisian club put forward an offer of €250 million for his services.

Barca, of course, rejected it and they have done their best to make it near impossible for any rival to pry away from the Olympic Stadium and then their traditional home of the Nou Camp when renovations are complete in 2026.

That is the year that Yamal’s current deal expires, and it includes a €1 billion release clause.

If that was not enough to alleviate any concerns about him potentially leaving Barcelona, ESPN have reported that there is an agreement lined-up to extend his deal until at least 2030.

“I don’t know when [the contract will be signed], but I believe it will be soon,” Yamal told CNN.

“At the end of the day, Barça is the club of my life. I hope to renew my contract with them and to be with them for as long as possible.

“I want to play in the Spanish league. I want to play for Barça, and yes, I will renew my contract. I will.”

The teenager’s comments are music to the ears of Barcelona officials after Yamal’s teammate Raphinha suggested that a recent fiasco might discourage potential transfer targets from joining the club.

Dani Olmo and Pau Victor were both unregistered on New Year’s Day after Barcelona missed a December 31 deadline to prove they are compliant with La Liga’s financial fair play rules.

Both players travelled with the squad to Saudi Arabia for the Spanish Super Cup semi-final, but neither were eligible to play.

Raphinha experienced similar issues when he joined the club in 2022.

The Brazilian had to wait for Barcelona to sell club assets to register him with the Spanish league.

“I think it could,” Raphinha said on Tuesday when asked if the situation could force players to avoid signing for Barcelona.

“I can’t say otherwise because I would be lying and that’s not me, I don’t like lying or telling stories. The truth is that if I was at another club and seeing the situation Pau and Dani are in, maybe I would think twice if it was best to be here.”

La Liga and the Spanish Football Federation confirmed in a joint statement that Barcelona are compliant with financial fair play regulations at present, but they cannot register Olmo or Victor this season.

Barca are challenging the decision with an appeal to Spain’s highest sports court, and they have requested a temporary allowance for the players to play as a resolution to the issue is not expected soon.

Regardless of what happens, Barcelona will be confident that Yamal’s commitment will outshine any reputational damage inflicted by the registration saga.

Raphinha may be correct that players will think twice before joining the Spanish giants, but the club’s officials will be certain that the opportunity to play with the sport’s most exciting young talent, in an expanded Nou Camp once it’s completed, in the shirt worn by the likes of Lionel Messi, Johan Cruyff and Diego Maradona is too appealing.

‘Absolutely gutted’: Disastrous injury confirmed for Socceroos giant in already-weakened spot

Harry Souttar has been dealt a devastating blow, with the Socceroos’ defender facing up to 12 months on the sidelines after rupturing his Achilles.

Souttar suffered the injury in the final moments of Sheffield United’s 2-0 loss to Burnley in the Championship on Friday morning (AEDT).

The 26-year-old was sent for scans which confirmed the worst.

The incident occurred after Souttar took a heavy touch and lunged to clear the ball. It was immediately clear he was in discomfort and had to be helped off the pitch at Bramall Lane.

“He is absolutely gutted,” Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield after their 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion on Monday morning.

“Devastated for him, he loved it here.

“He has been a great player to work with; great personality, great character.

“Big disappointment to lose the big fella because he has been incredible.”

It is the second serious injury setback for the towering centre back in three years. In November 2021, Souttar ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his knee during a World Cup qualifier against Saudi Arabia in Sydney.

Remarkably, he returned to action with former club Stoke City just before the World Cup in Qatar 12-months later, playing a starring role as the Socceroos stunned the world with a run to the round of sixteen.

“Thanks to everyone at Sheffield United,” Souttar said on his Instagram account.

    “Amazing club with great people.

“Unfortunately, that’s me out for a while but I wish everyone at the club all the best for the rest of the season and beyond.

“Once a blade always a blade.”

This latest injury is a cruel blow. Souttar moved to Sheffield United on loan after struggling for game time at Premier League battlers Leicester City.

Wilder had placed significant trust in the 6-foot-7-inch centre-half, with Souttar starting 21 of Sheffield United’s 23 matches in the second-tier Championship before his injury.

His absence also creates a significant headache for Socceroos coach Tony Popovic.

With four crucial matches remaining in the third round of World Cup qualifying, the Socceroos currently sit second in Group C. Maintaining that position will secure automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup in North America.

The Socceroos face Indonesia in Sydney in March before an away game against China five days later. A clash with current group leaders Japanin Perth and a trip to face regional heavyweights Saudi Arabia awaits in June.

Popovic will now have to fill a Souttar sized hole in the heart of his defence for all those fixtures.

He’s also unable to call on 21-year-old centre back Alessandro Circati, who ruptured his ACL during a training session with Italian Serie A side Parma in late September.

It leaves Cameron Burgess, Kye Rowles and Hayden Matthews as the most likely options moving forward for Popovic.

Burgess is starting regularly for Ipswich Town in the Premier League while Rowles is doing the same with Hearts in the Scottish Premiership.

However, both are left-footers and it remains to be seen how that could impact any potential partnership.

Matthews is right-footed and continues to grow in stature at Sydney FC.

The 20-year-old only signed his first professional contract earlier this year, but Popovic not only handed Matthews his Socceroos debut during the last international window in November but named him in the starting side in their last start 2-2 draw with Bahrain.

Souttar will be desperately hoping the Australians can navigate the next four fixtures and secure their spot at the 2026 World Cup.

Even a 12-month recovery should see him back on the park with six months to go before the tournament gets underway.

The defender has left Sheffield and headed back to Leicester to start rehabilitation.

He is contracted to the Foxes until the end of the 2028 season giving him time to rebuild his career once back to full fitness.

‘League of his own’: Salah breaks PL record but drops latest hint about possible Liverpool exit

Mohamed Salah dropped another hint that his future could lie away from Liverpool as the Egypt star said he would be happy “wherever I am going to end my career” after starring in Sunday’s 6-3 demolition of Tottenham.

Salah scored twice and provided two assists in the goal-spree in north London as Liverpool moved four points clear at the top of the Premier League.

The 32-year-old is the first Premier League player to bag at least 10 goals and 10 assists before Christmas, while his brace also took him into fourth place on Liverpool’s all-time list of scorers with 229 in all competitions.

“He is, quite frankly, a phenomenon,” The UK Telegraph’s chief football correspondent Jason Burt wrote.

“There is time for another statistic. In terms of overall goal contributions, in all competitions, Salah has an astonishing 33 in this campaign already. The next highest? Bukayo Saka with 22. The Egyptian really is in a league of his own.”

Salah’s immense value to Arne Slot’s team is clear, but Liverpool have been unable to persuade the forward to sign a new contract as speculation mounts about his future.

With Salah’s current deal expiring at the end of this season, he will be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club from January.

Salah has been linked with French giants Paris Saint-Germain as well as Saudi Arabian teams, and he has already made several comments earlier this season about this potentially being his last campaign with Liverpool.

Post-match on Sunday, Salah once again made a cryptic reference to his future.

“It’s great to achieve that at such a big club, but the most important thing is that we won the game. Wherever I am going to end my career I am happy about it,” he told Sky Sports.

Salah added that there was “no update” on his contract situation, but Slot will surely be desperate to extend his talisman’s seven-year stay on Merseyside after he took his goal tally to 18 in all competitions this term.

“Salah’s contract situation, with his current deal running out next June, has been well-discussed but the 32-year-old could do well to take a leaf out of Kevin De Bruyne’s playbook when it comes to negotiations,” Burt wrote in the UK Telegraph.

“With his last deal at Manchester City, which also expires at the end of this campaign, De Bruyne brought up the data to reinforce his worth. Salah can simply say to Liverpool: “look at my numbers. Look at the facts”.

With Salah to the fore, Liverpool have won 21 of their 25 games in all competitions since Slot replaced Jurgen Klopp as manager.

“I didn’t think about it before the game but I’m glad I have done it, something that makes me proud, I’ll keep working hard,” Salah said of reaching double figures in goals and assists this season.

Salah was less happy with Liverpool’s defending against Tottenham, adding: “We were quite good in front but I think we need to improve defensively as a team.

“Conceding three goals is quite hard. It’s quite good the result and hopefully we just keep going.”

Salah’s teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold has also been linked with a move away from Anfield, with the right back rumoured to be on Real Madrid’s radar.

Several Liverpool people are becoming more resigned to the losing the star duo, as well as a possible exit for star defender Virgil van Dijk whose contract also expires in June.

Former Reds defender Neil Ruddock believes “you can’t blame them” for looking elsewhere despite sitting top of the Premier League.

“Players come to the end of their contracts but I’m sure they’ve been talking, you don’t leave it until after Christmas, I’m sure there’s a lot going on,” Ruddock told FourFourTwo.

“I’m sure Liverpool are trying their hardest to keep the three of them there, but as a footballer, you can’t blame them if they want to taste playing abroad, playing for Real Madrid – for a young player like Trent, you can’t really blame him.

“For the older lads like Salah, I can also understand. Why would you stay a couple more years if you don’t think you’re going to be the player you were and you lose that hero status?

“There will be a lot of conversations going on between the players, the people who look after them and the club, there’s a lot to weigh up. For all three of them, I hope they stay, but you can also understand it if they go.”

  • Patrick Kisnorbo quits as Melbourne Victory coach to pursue overseas opportunity

Patrick Kisnorbo quits as Melbourne Victory coach to pursue overseas opportunity

Melbourne Victory coach Patrick Kisnorbo has shocked the A-League by quitting the club days out from the local derby with cross-town rivals Melbourne City to pursue an overseas opportunity.

Kisnorbo was only installed as Victory coach in June, replacing Tony Popovic, after being dumped by French club Troyes following an unsuccessful stint with the Ligue 1 club.

He had taken Victory to third on the A-League table after getting them to the final of the Australia Cup.

But in a move that will send shockwaves through the competition and was labelled “disappointing” by club chairman John Dovaston, Kisnorbo has quit with immediate effect, with his new destination unclear.

Kisnorbo will be replaced by senior assistant coach Arthur Diles to bring “stability and continuity” to the shell-shocked playing squad.
“We are disappointed to see Patrick depart the club so early in his expected journey with us; however, Patrick has advised us that this is an opportunity he wanted to take for his own development as a coach,” Dovaston said.

The club’s managing director, Caroline Carnegie, said Diles would be “well equipped” to take over and would be in charge for Saturday’s showdown with fourth-placed City at AAMI Park.

“We thank Patrick for his service and wish him all the best,” she said.

“As our attention turns to the rest of the season, we know Arthur is in an excellent position to further build on the strong foundations established as we ultimately strive for silverware.

“Arthur has a deep understanding of the team’s dynamics and is well equipped to ensure stability, maintain focus and provide leadership as the team moves forward.”

  • Kenya: Ekalale Eager to Make Kenya Proud On Her Second Home in Japan

Kenya: Ekalale Eager to Make Kenya Proud On Her Second Home in Japan

Nairobi — Japan-based Hellen Ekalale says her ultimate dream is to represent Kenya at next year’s World Championships, which will be held in her second home, that is Tokyo.

Ekalale says the prospect of donning the Team Kenya singlet while running in familiar territory is motivating her to work hard towards securing qualification.

“Of course, that is a very huge motivation for me. I have tried very hard in the past to secure qualification to major international competitions but I’ve never been successful. Next year, I am praying to get the ticket to represent our country in Tokyo and will work hard for the same,” the 25-year-old said.

Ekalale is further confident of making the podium in Japan, noting that it would be the stuff of dreams for her to win a medal for Kenya on a soil she has come to call home.

“I think so…that I am based in Japan, I think that’s an advantage that would work for me. It would make me so happy to win a medal for my country, especially considering the competition will be held in Tokyo,” she said.

Should she make the final team to the global championships, Ekalale will be flying the national flag for the second time in her career.

Her debut came at the 2018 World Under 20 Championships in Tampere, Finland, where she clocked 15:45.07 to finish fifth in the women’s 5000m.

One of her teammates on that occasion was Beatrice Chebet who has gone on to a medal-laden career, winning the Olympic 5000m and 10,000m title, World Cross Country Championships, in addition to smashing the world record for the 25-lap race.

Ekalale says she looks up to her agemate’s exploits as the full measure she needs to reach in her own career.

“Indeed, she has gone ahead to succeed in her career and do great things. She is truly an inspiration to many, including I,” she said.

The Toyota Running Company athlete’s success are also not anything to be sniffed at, particularly in Japan where she has been walking the track and field like a colossus.
