The visitors who entered the SCG Test following a defeat in Melbourne were trailing 2-1 in the series.

    Notably, Rohit Sharma dropped himself from the playing XI with Jasprit Bumrah taking up the captaincy duties. Batting first, India struggled early, with KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill falling cheaply. Rishabh Pant walked to the crease after lunch to steady the wobbling ship.

    This is the lowest average for any visiting captain in Australia. If he fails to perform in the upcoming fifth and final Test against Australia scheduled to be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) from January 3, 2025, it could set a new low, even worse than former West Indies captain Courtney Walsh’s average of 7.75.

    Meanwhile, Basit Ali questioned whether India became overconfident after winning the first Test in Perth. The former Pakistani cricketer also slammed Rohit Sharma, saying his decision to open shattered Team India’s confidence in the fourth Test against Australia at the MCG.

    The former Pakistan selector also highlighted how KL Rahul, who had been performing well, was put under the pressure of moving him down the order, leading to his poor scores of 24 and 0 at number three during India’s 184-run defeat in the Boxing Day Test against Australia in Melbourne.

    It’s not so much about Virat Kohli. I want to know what the batting coach of India is doing. We can’t solve the obvious problem of such a fine player. Enough has been said about Virat Kohli; we just have to leave him alone.”

    Even after Mitchell Starc fell, the hosts looked in control with the lead at 261, but the last two batters, Nathan Lyon and Scott Boland, added 55 runs, pushing Australia’s lead to 333. India tried everything to break the partnership but couldn’t get through.

    Bumrah thought he had Lyon caught at slip in the final over of Day 4, but a no-ball spoiled the moment for Team India.
