Perth Scorchers suffer dual blow with Mitchell Marsh and Phil Salt ruled out of BBL|12

Defending champions Perth Scorchers have suffered a major blow ahead of the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) as Australia allrounder Mitchell Marsh, and England batter Phil Salt both have been ruled out of the entire tournament due to their respective injuries.

Marsh will, in fact, miss three months of cricket after undergoing surgery on his troubled left ankle. Notably, the Western Australian has carried the ankle problem for a while now, and he reinjured it during Australia’s ODI series against Zimbabwe in August, which had ruled him out for over a month. Marsh’s decision to go for surgery will give him a chance to be fit for Australia’s next ODI assignment in India in March next year.

Salt, on the other hand, sustained a grade-two ligament injury on his left shoulder during the third and final ODI against Australia last week in Melbourne. The North Wales cricketer sustained the injury while diving to save a boundary during that game. Salt consulted a shoulder specialist who recommended the cricketer to miss both the Abu Dhabi T10 tournament and the BBL.

“Losing Mitch and Phil so close to the start of the season is very disappointing. Mitch is one of the best ball-strikers in global cricket with an incredible MBBL record, and his leadership and presence around the group is enormous,” said Perth Scorchers General Manager Kade Harvey in a statement.

“Phil has proven his class for England and in T20 tournaments around the world, so it’s unfortunate he won’t pull on the orange this summer. We’re under no illusions about how difficult it will be to cover the absence of Mitch and Phil, but we take pride in the depth of our squad and have a lot of players capable of stepping up,” he added.

    Perth Scorchers squad for BBL|12:

Ashton Agar, Cameron Bancroft, Jason Behrendorff, Cooper Connolly, Faf du Plessis (international – South Africa), Cameron Green, Aaron Hardie, Peter Hatzoglou, Nick Hobson, Josh Inglis, Matt Kelly, Tymal Mills (international – England), Lance Morris, Jhye Richardson, Ashton Turner (captain), Andrew Tye, Replacement international – TBC, Replacement local – TBC

WATCH: Pat Cummins cleans up Kraigg Brathwaite with a beauty in Perth Test to complete his 200 wickets

Australian captain Pat Cummins accomplished a special milestone when he got rid of West Indies skipper Kraigg Brathwaite on Day 3 of the ongoing first Test at Optus Stadium in Perth.

Upon dismissing Brathwaite, Cummins claimed the landmark of registering 200 wickets in red-ball cricket. It needed a proper jaffa to end Brathwaite’s fighting knock, and Cummins came up with a sensation.

It all happened during the 55th over of the West Indies innings when the Aussie quick went for a length delivery that angled into the middle and off. The Windies captain looked to defend it and played down the accurate line. But the ball straightened just enough to go past the outside edge and hit the top of the off-stump.

Fastest to 200 Test Wickets for Australia (by matches):

    • 36 – Clarrie Grimmett
    • 38 – Dennis Lillee
    • 41 – Stuart MacGill
    • 42 – Shane Warne
    • 44 – PAT CUMMINS*
    • 45 – Glenn McGrath
    • 46 – Graham McKenzie
    • 49 – Richie Benaud, Merv Hughes, Mitchell Johnson
    • 50 – Craig McDermott, Mitchell Starc

The day began with debutant Tagenarine Chanderpaul registering his maiden half-century in the format before he fell to Josh Hazlewood in the opening over. Cummins and his partner-in-crime Mitchell Starc were the pick of the bowlers, bagging three wickets each.

The hosts did the maximum damage when the second new ball was available. The visitors faced the heat in the final session and lost their last six wickets for 39 runs in 18.2 overs. Apart from the fast-bowling duo, spinner Nathan Lyon also picked up a couple of scalps and went past Dale Steyn‘s tally of 439 Test scalps to become the ninth leading wicket-taker in the history of Test cricket.

The Aussies bundled down the visitors for 283 before posting 29/1 on the board at stumps to take a massive lead of 344 runs with two days left in this contest.

AUS vs WI: Pat Cummins confirms Australia’s playing XI for the Perth Test

Australia captain Pat Cummins has confirmed his team’s playing XI that will take the field in the first Test against the West Indies in Perth on Wednesday, November 30.

Scott Boland, who was the star performer for Australia during the Ashes this year, couldn’t find a place in the starting XI as Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood complete the three-man pace attack.

Among the batters, veteran opener David Warner and Usman Khawaja remain at the top, with left-hander Marcus Harris missing out despite being called up for the two-match series.

In order to make their position strong to reach the 2021-2023 ICC World Test Championship final, Australia have to beat the West Indies.

Australia are currently at the second place in the ICC World Test Championship standings while the West Indies are in the sixth position.

Australia’s playing XI for the Perth Test:

  • Aussie legend Glenn McGrath opens up on Pat Cummins’ decision to skip IPL 2023

Aussie legend Glenn McGrath opens up on Pat Cummins’ decision to skip IPL 2023

Legendary Australian cricketer Glenn McGrath has shared his take over Aussie Test skipper Pat Cummins’ decision to skip the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Ahead of the IPL franchises retention/released players list submission deadline, Cummins, who was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for INR 7.25 crore at the mega-auction in February this year, had announced his decision to opt-out of IPL 2023 citing a hectic international schedule, including Ashes and ODI World Cup.

“I’ve made the difficult decision to miss next years IPL. The international schedule is packed with Tests and ODI’s for the next 12 months, so will take some rest ahead of an Ashes series and World Cup. Thanks so much to @KKRiders for their understanding. Such a terrific team of players and staff, and I hope I can get back there ASAP,” Cummins had tweeted.

Reacting to Cummins’ decision, former Australian fast bowler McGrath has come out to extend his support to the New South Wales cricketer. McGrath felt that fast bowlers should take a rest to balance out things and give preference to representing the national side.

“Cummo has come out and said he’s not going to the next IPL. That’s where you have your offseason, get strong and get through the next season. If you don’t do that, you’re a car that never refuels. Sooner or later, you’re going to run out. Fast bowlers need to have a bit of an offseason because bowling and running depletes your strength,” said McGrath while speaking to AAP.

“You don’t want to devalue the Big Bash, but you have to weigh up what is important. Playing for Australia should still be the be-all and end-all. Test cricket is still the ultimate,” the 52-year-old added.

Cummins has so far played 42 matches in the lucrative league, picking up 45 wickets at an average of 30.16 and an economy of 8.54, with 4/34 being his best performance.

Danushka Gunathilaka granted bail in sexual assault case

Sri Lanka’s Danushka Gunathilaka has received a bit of relief in the ongoing case against him on the charges of sexual assault after he was granted bail by the court. The Sri Lankan cricket association and the government backed the cricketer, offering a sum of $150,000 for his bail.

Danushka Gunathilaka was arrested by the Australian police in the early hours of November 6 from the Hyatt Regency hotel on Sussex Street after a case was filed against him on charges of sexual assault. Gunathilaka, who was left behind by the Sri Lankan team after their T20 World Cup campaign ended following the loss to England, spent 11 nights in custody after he was refused bail on November 7.

But the cricketer was granted bail after his lawyer Murugan Thangaraj, submitted a bail application to the Supreme Court of New South Wales. The earlier bail appeal was refused by the court after the police had argued that the release of the accused cricketer could endanger the safety of the complainant.

However, Thangaraj assured the court that, “Gunathilaka was being supported by a Sri Lankan cricket association and [the] Sri Lankan government and If he breaches his bail, of course his career would be over.”

“We know, on the complainant’s own case, there was consensual oral sex and consensual vaginal intercourse prior to any problem arising on her version. It is not a strong prosecution case. Because they have found the social media of the complainant, why should that be held against him? It’s totally irrelevant in respect of bail.” Thangaraj said.

After listening to the argument of the defendant, Magistrate Janet Wahlquist granted bail on conditions including a $150,000 surety. The accused will have to report to the police daily, maintaining a curfew from 9 pm and 6 am without contacting the complainant. He has been further banned from using platforms like Tinder and other dating applications.

Sri Lanka Cricket suspended the all-rounder from all forms of the game after his misdemeanor came to light. The next hearing on the case has been scheduled for January 12.

  • AUS v ENG: WATCH – Mitchell Starc castles Jason Roy with a ripping inswinger in Adelaide ODI

AUS v ENG: WATCH – Mitchell Starc castles Jason Roy with a ripping inswinger in Adelaide ODI

After their highly-impressive campaign in the T20 World Cup 2022, champions England are being hosted by Australia in the three-match ODI series that started today in Adelaide. Pat Cummins won the toss for the hosts and chose to bowl against the newly-crowned T20 world cup winners.

Australia struck early, with Cummins drawing the first blood after he found the outside edge of Phil Salt (14 off 15). Just two balls later, Mitchell Starc joined the party and got rid of explosive batter Jason Roy with his trademark inswinger

It all happened in the fifth over of England’s innings when Starc bowled on a good length, and Roy wasn’t sure whether to go forward or stay back. The white leather came back in sharply, ripping through and shattering the stumps.

    Here is the video:

After 22 overs, England have managed to post 111/4 on the board. The three lions were in deep trouble at one stage, having lost four wickets for 66, but experienced campaigners Dawid Malan (40*) and Jos Buttler (25*) steadied the ship for England.

Earlier, Australia left out Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Marsh in the playing XI and picked up Ashton Agar along with Cameron Green. The approach of picking spinners somehow shows Australia’s plans for the forthcoming ODI World Cup in India.

“Looks like a really good wicket that will stay the same throughout, so we’ll try and chase something down tonight. We’re really excited. We’ve had a good freshen-up the last week. [Team News] Carey at 5, Stoinis at 6, Green at 7, two spinners, Agar and Zampa, Starc and myself,” Cummins said at the toss.
