Twitter reactions: Rohit Sharma’s fighting knock in vain as Bangladesh pip India in last ball thriller to seal series

In another nail-biting thriller at Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka, Bangladesh defeated India by five runs and clinched the ODI series.

This game swung one way and the other, and the result wasn’t decided until the final delivery of India’s chase. Shreyas Iyer (82) and Axar Patel (56) were impressive after India had slipped to four wickets down at 65. The duo put together 107 runs for the fifth wicket before Bangladesh’s bowlers brought their side back in the game with quick dismissals at the key moments

Captain Rohit Sharma, whose injured left thumb forced him not to open, came to bat at number nine to bail the tourists out of trouble, and he almost did by bringing the equation down to 12 needed from 2 deliveries. Rohit hit Mustafizur Rahman for a six on the fifth delivery of the final over but couldn’t connect the last ball over the fence as India lost the thrilling contest by five runs. Rohit cracked an unbeaten 51 off 28 balls.

Earlier, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, the hero of the three-match series opener, once again stood up for Bangladesh, hitting a tremendous century to take the hosts to a competitive 271/7, after they lost six wickets for just 69. Mehidy smashed 100 off 83 balls, including 8 fours and 4 sixes. He was well supported by veteran Mahmudullah, who scored 77 from 96 deliveries.

  • Shikhar Dhawan reveals Team India’s game plan for the must-win second ODI against Bangladesh

Shikhar Dhawan reveals Team India’s game plan for the must-win second ODI against Bangladesh

Team India will be playing a do-or-die contest when they head into Sher-e-Bangla stadium for the second One-Day International (ODI) against Bangladesh on Wednesday, December 07. The Men in Blue faced a defeat in the opening game at the same venue and are 0-1 behind in the three-match leg, thus making the second ODI a crucial contest to stay alive in the series.

Ahead of the must-win contest, veteran India opener Shikhar Dhawan has revealed the team’s game plan for the high-quality spin attack of the Tigers. Notably, Bangladesh spinners did a great job in restricting the tourists to a below-par score of 186 in the first ODI. Former captain Shakib Al Hasan and all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz bowled exceptionally well in puzzling Indian batters. Shakib, in particular, was the chief architect behind India’s batting failure as the senior tweaker picked up a five-wicket haul while conceding only 36 runs in his quota of 10 overs, including a couple of maidens.

Speaking about the same, Dhawan said the batters are working on their sweep shot and reverse hit as part of their preparation, which will also come in handy in the ODI World Cup at home later this year.

“It’s good to practice more. These shots will come in handy in these conditions. You will see our batters playing these shots tomorrow. Even the World Cup is in India next year, where spinners will make an impact, and these shots will be helpful. I always enjoy playing them. It’s good to practice more in these conditions,” Dhawan said in the pre-match presser.

Bangladesh were 136/9 in 39.3 overs in their small chase of 187, but Mehidy and Mustafizur Rahman formed an unbroken 51-run stand for the last wicket to take their side over the finish line. Regarding the result, Dhawan said that these kinds of things are part and parcel of games before lavishing praise on the hosts.

“This is not the first time we have lost the first game in a series. This is quite normal, we know how to bounce back from these situations. We’re very, very confident. It doesn’t happen very often, they played really well. Of course, Bangladesh are playing really good cricket,” added Dhawan.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s heroics in the opening one-day international shocked Rohit Sharma and his team India as they lost the encounter by one wicket margin in a thriller in Dhaka. Mehidy and fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman shared an unbeaten 51-run stand for the tenth wicket to seal a memorable victory with four overs to spare for the Bangla Tigers as they took a 1-0 lead in the series. Mehidy’s match-winning knock of 38* off 39 included four fours and two maximums.

Talking in detail about the opener, star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan proved his worth yet again like he has been doing for years now. The veteran left-arm spinner took five wickets for just 36 runs with two maidens in his ten overs. Shakib’s spell also included two important and crucial scalps of India skipper Rohit and Virat Kohli. KL Rahul, who has been doing well in the middle order in ODIs, was the only shining light for the visitors as he struck 73 to take his side’s total to above 180.

Apart from Mehidy, skipper Litton Das also led from the front as he scored valuable 41 runs at the top of the order. Going into a do-or-die clash, the Men in Blue will look to bounce back to winning ways and keep the series alive by snatching a win in the second game at the same venue. Notably, the Asian giants have now lost three of their last four one-day internationals on these shores. On the other hand, the Bangla Tigers will look to register a back-to-back series victory against India in the format at home, having beaten them 2-0 (3) last time out in 2015.

Meanwhile, here are some of the important stats and numbers ahead of the 2nd ODI between Bangladesh and India:

Head-to-Head: Bangladesh and India have locked horns in 37 One-Day Internationals so far with Bangladesh winning just six times and India 30. One game ended with no result. In Bangladesh, both have met 23 times with the home side sealing victories on five occasions and India on 17.

3 – Rohit Sharma (497) needs three sixes to complete 500 maximums in international cricket.

2 – KL Rahul (98) needs two grabs to reach the landmark of 100 catches across formats.

9 – Shikhar Dhawan (841) requires nine fours to complete 850 fours in ODIs.

21 – Virat Kohli (979) is 21 runs short of reaching 1000 ODI runs in Bangladesh.

4 – Shakib Al Hasan (46) is four sixes away from reaching 50 maximums in One-Day Internationals.

4 – Shreyas Iyer (146) is four fours away from reaching 150 fours in the ODI format.

83 – Shreyas Iyer (2917) needs 83 runs to reach 3000 runs in international matches.

6 – Afif Hossain (44) requires six fours to get to 50 fours in ODIs.

  • Team India penalised with a hefty fine for slow over-rate in the first ODI against Bangladesh

Team India penalised with a hefty fine for slow over-rate in the first ODI against Bangladesh

Team India have been penalised for maintaining a slow over-rate in the recently-concluded first ODI of the three-match series against Bangladesh.

The Rohit Sharma-led side was found guilty of four overs short of their target after reasonable adjustments and time allowances had been taken into consideration by the on-field umpires on-field umpires Michael Gough and Tanvir Ahmed, third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and fourth umpire Gazi Sohel.

The tourists were fined 80 per cent of their match, and captain Rohit pleaded guilty to the offence, with match referee Ranjan Madugalle of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposing the sanction without needing a formal hearing.

“Match referee Ranjan Madugalle imposed the sanction after India were ruled to be four overs short of the target,” said ICC in a media statement.

“In accordance with Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 20 per cent of their match fee for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time,” the statement further read.

Notably, the Men in Blue lost the contest by one wicket after Mehidy Hasan played a match-winning unbeaten 38*, helping Bangladesh register a historic win over India at Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla Stadium. The second ODI will also be played at the same venue on Wednesday.

“It was a very close game. We did very well to come back into the game. We did not bat well. We bowled pretty well and kept them under pressure till the end. They held their nerves in the backend. If you look back at how we bowled, of course the last few overs, we would have liked to get a wicket. We kept taking wickets all through. It wasn’t enough runs. Another 30-40 runs would have made a difference,” Rohit had said after the game.

Team India lost the first of the three-match ODI series to hosts Bangladesh by a narrow margin of a wicket at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium. KL Rahul, who returned to the side following a short break that he took from the recently concluded New Zealand series, shared his stance on the role assigned by his team.

The Men in Blue had an underwhelming outing with the bat against the Bangla Tigers as star wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul scored 73 runs to help the side attain a total of 186 in 41.2 overs. The batter who came out at the no. 5 spot opined that he has been assigned the role by the management after careful assessment and also issued a clarification for Rishabh Pant’s exclusion.

“We have not played many ODIs in the past 6-7 months but if you look from 2020-’21, I have kept wickets and batted at four. I have been assigned this role by the team. I don’t exactly know the reason for (Rishabh) Pant’s release. The medical team will be able to tell why Pant was released,” told KL Rahul after the match.

Bangladesh fought really hard today: KL Rahul

The wicketkeeper-batter spoke about the match and stated that the rival side fought till the very end which is why they obtained the desired result in the narrow win.

“You can expect the unexpected in this game. Such games keep happening, that’s cricket. The game is never won till the last ball. Mehidy’s innings and the way they fought till the end made the difference. One or two dropped chances hurt us too,” he added.

“But yeah, they played well. Bangladesh fought really hard today. We made some mistakes which we need to learn from and come back strongly. He (Mehidy) took risks and found the boundary. Bangladesh are playing at home and they are good here. They pose a tough challenge,” concluded Rahul.

Twitter reactions: Mehidy Hasan’s heroics lead Bangladesh to a nail-biting victory over India

Mehidy Hasan turned out to be the hero of Dhaka as he drove Bangladesh to a thrilling one-wicket win over India in the first ODI at Sher-e-Bangla Stadium. The nail-biting victory helped the hosts take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

With only one wicket in hand, Bangladesh needed 51 runs to win the contest. Mehidy formed a sensational partnership with Mustafizur Rahman and finished with an unbeaten 38 to steer over the line. The last-wicket pair stayed together for 39 deliveries and added vital 51 runs.

Mehidy fancied his chances by regularly attacking the bowlers. He did give a couple of chances, but India crumbled under pressure, with KL Rahul dropping Mehidy once and Washington Sundar not judging the catch. Things went south for the tourists as apart from dropping catches, they bowled no-balls, effected overthrows and misfielded as well.

Earlier, Shakib Al Hasan and Ebadot Hossain ran through the Indian batting unit, eventually packing the visitors for 186 in 41.2 overs. Shakib picked up a five-wicket haul for 36 in his quota of 10 overs, and Hossain bagged four scalps while giving away 47 runs in 8.2 overs. For the Men in Blue, Rahul top scored with 73 off 70 deliveries, with the help of five fours and four sixes.

“I am really happy and excited. I was only thinking about focusing on one area and believing in that strategy, and I knew I only needed to bat about 20 balls to get going. I tried to bowl wicket to wicket with the ball. It is a memorable performance for me,” said Mehidy after the match.

BAN vs IND: Virat Kohli works out intensely ahead of first ODI

After his intense gym session last week, batting megastar Virat Kohli was lately seen sweating it out in the nets just a couple of days before the first international between India and Bangladesh, which is scheduled to be played at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka.

Kohli, who was given a well-deserved break for the just-concluded New Zealand series, seemed rejuvenated during the practice session where he showed a glimpse of his preparations to his fans and well-wishers on social media.

On his latest Instagram post, a still of Kohli can be seen middling the ball well in the nets which hints that he might be in the perfect frame of mind ahead of the upcoming bilateral series.

Meanwhile, the batting icon who roared back to form in T20Is this year would now be hoping to replicate similar performances in the 50-overs format as well. His last ODI century had come way back in August 2019 during an away series against the West Indies and Kohli would be hoping to register his 44th ton in the One Day Internationals.

Meanwhile, the ODIs will be followed by a two-match Test series where the 34-year-old would also be looking to score his 28th Test century. Should Kohli score a century in any of the five matches on this tour, he will go past the legendary Australian skipper Ricky Ponting‘s tally of 71 international tons. Kohli is currently tied at the second spot on this elite list and is only behind Sachin Tendulkar, who has 100 international centuries to his name.

Virat Kohli would be heading into this bilateral series oozing with confidence, having finished as the highest run-getter of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. He finished with 296 runs from six matches including four half-centuries.
