Arsenal set for defensive shake-up vs Forest with decision made over Merino

Mikel Arteta may be in the middle of an attacking injury crisis – but he could be set to name his starting defence for the first time since November.

Arsenal face high-flying Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Wednesday night – live on talkSPORT.

The Gunners are looking for an immediate return to winning ways following their shock 1-0 defeat to West Ham at the Emirates last weekend.

Having failed to cut Liverpool‘s lead down to five points, the north London outfit now trail Arne Slot’s men by 11 points following the Reds’ 2-0 triumph at Manchester City.

Many Gooners now feel as though their title tilt is all-but over – and a defeat to Forest could leave them in a fight for a top four spot.

Just six currently separates Arsenal in second and Forest in third, and with Manchester United and Chelsea on the horizon for Arteta‘s side, they know they can’t afford a second successive loss.

But they know they will be in store for a tough night with the club without their four key forwards in Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Jesus.

Goals from Jesus and Saka at the City Ground last term helped Arsenal claim all three points, while the latter also scored in the 3-0 win over Forest in November.

While the club are undoubtedly light up top, they have been boosted by the return of versatile defender Ben White, who is finally back to full fitness following his knee surgery.

He made his first appearance for the club since the 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge on November 10 in the defeat to the Hammers.

Waxing lyrical over the England international in his pre-match press conference, Arteta said of White: “He’s a player that has given us something very, very special, especially in that right unit.

“We haven’t played with that right unit at all this season with him, Bukayo and Martin as well – a unit that has played so much football together.

“It’s great to have him back, it’s more options and his energy, the way he is around the team and what he generates, he’s certainly been missed.”

White’s return is a boost for Arsenal in more ways than one with the club set to be without left-back Myles Lewis-Skelly due to suspension following his red card.

With a possible defensive shake-up in order, here talkSPORT.com takes a look at how they could start against Forest.

David Raya will continue to deputise between the sticks having established himself as one of the top-flight’s best goalkeepers since joining from Brentford.

White could then return to his right-back role, resulting in Jurrien Timber being shifted off to left-back – ahead of Riccardo Calafiori.

William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes would then once again be paired in the heart of defence as they look to shut out goal machine Chris Wood.

Timber could be moved back to left-back should White return to the line-up

    5

Should White, Saliba, Gabriel and Timber all start, it would be the first time they’d have been in the line-up together since the 1-1 draw at Chelsea.

Timber started off his Arsenal career as a left-back, with seven of his opening nine matches this term coming from the position.

Moving into midfield, and Thomas Partey could once again be deployed in a lone defensive No. 6 role.

This would allow both skipper Martin Odegaard and club-record signing Declan Rice to slot in as No.8s – though the pair know they must start soon chipping with goals with the duo having a combined three strikes in the league so far.

Leandro Trossard will then slot in ahead of Raheem Sterling on the left wing, with Ethan Nwaneri to keep his spot on the right wing after shaking off his cramp issues.

With no fit and available striker, Arteta turned to Mikel Merino against West Ham following his dazzling display off the bench away at Leicester.

Arsenal's lack of goals from midfield has been an issue for Arteta

    5

Arsenal’s lack of goals from midfield has been an issue for Arteta

But he failed to replicate his heroics against West Ham, leading to suggestion Arteta could look to try something else.

However, the Spaniard has hinted he will experiment with Merino up top once more when asked whether he feels his compatriot can play as a false nine.

He remarked: “Yes – in relation to the opposition and the options we have, and then what the team generates as well.

“Attacking players depend a lot on what the team is generating, the chemistry, the fluidity, the areas we are hitting, and how we interact with each other.

“It worked really against Leicester, but the other day there were a lot of things missing.”

England and White told to ‘draw a line’ over feud to get defender back into team

Ben White is too good of a defender to not be playing for England with both parties told to settle their differences.

That is the view of Three Lions icon Sol Campbell, who has declared the Arsenal star is one of the best right-backs in world football.

    3

White hasn’t featured for England since 2022 – ruling himself out of selection ever sinceCredit: Getty

White hasn’t featured for England since leaving the camp during the Qatar World Cup in 2022.

In the last two years, he has made himself unavailable for selection, with interim boss Lee Carsley insisting that remains the case.

As a result, Carsley recently stated White wasn’t in his thinking for the October international break, where England will face Greece and Finland in the Nations League.

But Campbell is desperate to see White gain a recall, though he has stressed it could prove to be problematic having been out of the picture for so long.

Campbell was speaking to talkSPORT correspondent Ben Jacobs at the Thinking Football Summit in Porto, where he sent a plea to White, England and the FA.

He said: “When I look at Ben White – how do you integrate him back into the fold?

“He is one of the best right backs in that position now, young, he’s playing really well, how do you get him back in?

“How do you bridge the gap with the fans? How do you patch that up?

“It’s like, ‘What are you doing?’ He is one of the best guys in that position. Yeah, they may already be winning, but White is playing top football.

“Deep down, he’s a man that wants to play for England, but obviously something happened before.

“But with many things, if you allow things to drag on from the previous management to the new management – then that’s not the best way to do it.

“Draw a line [under it], be a man and move on to the next, because he is a top player and you want the best players to play for England.”

White has established himself as one of the Premier League’s top full-backs since swapping Brighton for Arsenal in 2021.

Gabby Agbonlahor and Alan Brazil warn Ben White he may ‘regret’ England Stance as Lee Carsley is set to leave him out

Having played the 2021/22 season as a centre-back, Mikel Arteta shifted him off to the right-side of defence to accommodate William Saliba’s introduction into the backline.

And it’s a position he has thrived in, making the right-back spot his own, where he has forged a brilliant relationship with winger Bukayo Saka.

White will be in action for Arsenal on Sunday in the north London derby where he will be looking to keep Tottenham skipper Son Heung-min quiet.

White omitted as Lee Carsley hands out four debut call-ups in England squad

Lille star Angel Gomes is one of four new call-ups to Lee Carsley’s first England squad.

The 23-year-old has impressed since leaving Manchester United to embark on a new adventure in France in 2020.

Joining Gomes in being selected for the first time are Noni Madueke, Morgan Gibbs-White and Tino Livramento.

Interim England boss Carsley knows all about the quality of Gomes, Madueke and Gibbs-White, with the trio all featuring in the the Young Lions’ European Under-21 Championship success last year.

Madueke in particular has started the new season in fine form having banged in a hat-trick for Chelsea in their recent 6-2 win away at Wolves.

Levi Colwill and Cole Palmer, who were also part of Carsley‘s squad that beat Spain 1-0 in the Euro U21 final, have also been selected in his Nations League squad.

It will be the first time in eight years that the Three Lions will go into a match without Gareth Southgate in the dugout.

England face Ireland and Finland on September 7 and 10 respectively to kick off their League B campaign.

As talkSPORT told you, Arsenal star Ben White has missed out on selection.

Carsley revealed in his press conference that there has been no change in White’s decision to return to England duty for the first time since 2022.

He said: “As far I’m aware he wasn’t available for selection (before) and nothing has changed in my two weeks here.”

White is one of a number of notable omissions, which includes Marcus Rashford and James Maddison.

Meanwhile Kyle Walker, Luke Shaw, Adam Wharton, Aaron Ramsdale, Lewis Dunk, Ivan Toney and Joe Gomez have all been left out despite being part of England’s Euro 2024 squad.

Kieran Trippier has since retired from international football, with Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham unavailable for selection having picked up a leg injury.

While White and Walker have been overlooked, Carsley has recalled fellow full-back Rico Lewis back into the team.

Gabby Agbonlahor demands at least three English players must be in every Premier League starting XI this season

Lewis’ only international outing came in November 2023 where he featured in a Euro 2024 qualifier against North Macedonia.

But having started in Manchester City‘s opening two Premier League victories, the 19-year-old has earned his England recall, where he will now be hoping to add to his solitary cap next month.

His Citizens teammate Jack Grealish is also back in the squad following his Euro 2024 omission – despite playing just 19 minutes of football this term.

Man United defender Harry Maguire returns too having missed the Euros due to injury.

Carsley suggested the absence of Man City veteran Walker was down to his lack of minutes since a busy summer with England, while he is glad to bring Maguire back into the reckoning.

He said: “The fact Kyle hasn’t played this season would suggest City are phasing him in gently. We have to respect that.

“Harry Maguire missed out on the Euro squad through injury. I see him as a real good leader, especially with the centre-backs we’ve got.”

Carsley is also confident Nottingham Forest’s Gibbs-White and Lille’s Gomes can make the step up to the senior squad’s midfield after impressing him for the Under-21s.

“Morgan is a very attacking player, full of energy, very creative, very exciting,” he added.

“He has been really successful with England and I thought that was important. A lot of the players we’ve called in are used to winning.

“Angel is very technical, he controls the game with his kill and his technique. He is very determined, has a great attitude and loves football. I think he is a player people will be excited to see.”

On taking charge of England’s senior side, he continued: “I think it is a real proud moment obviously for my family and myself.

“It has been a really hectic couple of weeks getting my head around the magnitude of the job, getting around to see as many matches as I can.

“I think it is fair to say the job that Gareth and Steve (Holland) did and the position I am picking the squad up is totally different to when they picked it up.

“I understand I am in a really privileged position and I am excited to meet up with the players.

“I thought it was important we put some fresh faces in and put our mark on the squad.”

The stunning Arsenal XI that Julian Alvarez could offer Arteta in title charge

Arsenal could boast two different yet equally excellent starting XIs next season if they continue their impressive summer business.

The Gunners have already welcomed David Raya on a permanent deal and the new signing of Riccardo Calafiori so far this transfer window.

Ahead of the new season, talkSPORT understands Mikel Arteta’s side are in talks with Real Sociedad for midfielder Mikel Merino.

We also reported earlier on Saturday that Arsenal have expressed an interest in signing Julian Alvarez from their Premier League title rivals Manchester City.

Alvarez, who was part of his nation’s Copa America-winning squad this summer, revealed that he’d be considering his City future, saying: “I haven’t stopped to think about what I’m going to do.

“Last season I was one of the players who played the most minutes in the team.

“But it’s true: in the end, in some important games, it’s not pleasant to be left out. I will have time to consider my decision.

“I haven’t stopped to think things through calmly. Once the Olympic Games are over, I will take the time to reflect on what I want for myself.

“Maybe it’s annoying to be out in big games; players always want to help on the pitch.”

The north London outfit will surely challenge for the crown yet again if they’re able to sign both, and talkSPORT.com has looked at two ways in which they could line-up with the potential new additions.

Raya is set to retain his spot as Arsenal’s first choice goalkeeper after keeping 20 clean sheets in all competitions last season on loan from Brentford.

Coming in as the new left-back could be Calafiori, who has joined in a deal from Bologna that could reach £38million with add-ons.

Although the Italian international is most notably a centre-back, he has previously played as a full-back during his career.

One of the key reasons as to why Arsenal conceded the least goals in the Premier League last season – 29 – was their centre-back pairing of Gabriel and William Saliba.

The Brazilian and French duo have proven incredibly difficult to face on various occasions and are one of the best partnerships in football.

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard admits he’s happy with the current Gunners squad when asked if the club will make any new signings after bringing in Ricardo Calafiori

Ben White will likely become the fourth centre-back to feature in the Arsenal backline having successfully moved into the right-back role under Arteta.

Sitting ahead of the defence to operate as their defensive midfielder will most certainly be Declan Rice.

He featured in all 38 of their league games last season, scoring an impressive seven goals and assisting a further nine.

Arsenal’s could be set to start two players in the no.8 role in front of Rice, with Sociedad star Merino possibly one of those included.

The 28-year-old, who previously played in the Premier League for Newcastle, starred for Spain during their Euro 2024 triumph and has a great eye for a pass in the middle of the park.

Club captain Martin Odegaard will likely play alongside him, with the Norwegian one of the best playmakers in the league.

He scored 11 goals and assisted another 11 in all competitions last season, with his creativity proving influential when the Gunners go forward.

Despite a difficult final few weeks in the previous campaign, Gabriel Martinelli could still be given the nod at left-wing by Arteta.

Here is one way that Arsenal could line-up for next season…

However, should Arsenal complete the signing of two-time Premier League champion Alvarez from City, the boss’ thinking could change.

Although an appearance of the left of the attack with the reigning champions isn’t the go-to, he has played there for Argentina.

Alvarez also boasts a strong right foot, so he would be able cut inside and fire towards goal should the opportunity arise.

The 24-year-old could also find himself starting in a central attacking role in Arsenal’s front three given his success there for City and his country.

This is an alternative way that Arteta could organise his side...

    7

This is an alternative way that Arteta could organise his side…

Kai Havertz would likely be his strongest competition for that spot as he ended the 2023/24 campaign with 14 goals in all competitions despite his slow start.

Completing the line-up is their star man Bukayo Saka, whose 20 goals and 14 assists last season make him worthy of starting for any top club across Europe.

Arsenal start their season with a home clash with Wolves on Saturday, August 17.

Arsenal’s most expensive signings ever including record deal for Declan Rice

Arsenal are continuing to sign Europe’s best talent as they attempt to win the Premier League for the first time since 2004.

The Gunners whipped out the chequebook for Arsene Wenger, Unai Emery and now for Mikel Arteta as the Spaniard continues to spend big.

    11

This summer Riccardo Calafiori has joined the club for an initial £33.6million, with add-ons.

However, despite the Italian centre-back’s brilliant displays in Serie A last season with Bologna and with Italy at Euro 2024 it’s not one of the club’s biggest ever deals.

Only the completion of the add-ons, which would make the deal worth £42m, will he even crack the top 10.

But who are the most expensive signings ever for Arsenal? talkSPORT.com takes a look…

    10. Granit Xhaka – £38.9m

Xhaka signed for Arsenal in 2016, leaving German side Borussia Monchengladbach to make a move to the Premier League.

And his time at the Emirates will be remembered for his remarkable turnaround.

The midfielder was handed the captain’s armband in 2019 but things quickly turned sour as he was booed off the pitch by the Gunners fans.

Xhaka responded to the supporters by cupping his ear and throwing his shirt on the floor as he left the field.

It seemed that incident spelt the end of his time at the club, however, he made an unexpected return and ended up becoming a fan favourite.

He starred for Arsenal under Mikel Arteta last season as he helped lead a title charge before making a return to Germany with Bayer Leverkusen where he claimed the Bundesliga title in his first season.

    9. Mesut Ozil – £40.6m

Signed from Real Madrid, Ozil arrived as a world-class player and he most certainly kept that tag at Arsenal.

The German is one of the best playmakers seen in the Premier League, with his deft touches and incredible skill making his price tag a bargain.

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard admits he’s happy with the current Gunners squad when asked if the club will make any new signings after bringing in Ricardo Calafiori

Before leaving the Gunners in 2021, he played 254 games and boasted a record of 44 goals and 79 assists in all competitions.

His time at the Emirates was marred by a rough ending that saw him phased out of the team and even made absent from the club’s registered squad.

His talents will always be fondly remembered in north London.

Now he is gaining attention for, well, his gains as he hits the gym, making for an impressive body transformation.

    8. Thomas Partey – £43.2m

Partey made the move to England from Atletico Madrid in 2020.

The Ghanaian was considered one of the best defensive midfielders in the world at the time, with the signing key for Arteta’s side.

He has played a big role in Arsenal’s title challenges but on the whole, his career at the Emirates has been damaged by injuries.

Partey has been sidelined for over 330 days during his Gunners career after suffering from constant knocks and that made his fitness very unreliable.

He has made 115 appearances for the Gunners in total but has been linked to an exit in the transfer window.

Partey has become injury-prone at Arsenal

    7. Gabriel Jesus – £45.1m

Ironically, Jesus arrived as a saviour for Arsenal in 2022.

Arteta had just lost strikers Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, meaning he was desperate for a new No.9.

So he returned to his former club to go all out to sign the Brazilian from Manchester City after they had brought in Erling Haaland

Jesus has picked up a couple of injuries at the club so far, which has seen him only make 53 Premier League appearances in total across two season.

And the Gunners are rumoured to be looking for a new striker once again, with their No.9 only scoring four in 24 Premier League appearances last season.

Jesus has been Arsenal's main striker since joining from Man City

    6. Alexandre Lacazette – £45.8m

Lacazette joined Arsenal from Lyon in 2017 and was a key player for the Gunners during his five-year spell at the club.

The Frenchman scored over 10 goals in four of his five seasons in the Premier League, netting a total of 71 times in 206 appearances in all competitions.

He even wore the captain’s armband at times as he led the line, however, he wasn’t able to take Arsenal back to the Champions League

After his contract ran out in 2022, he returned to Lyon on a free transfer.

    5. Ben White – £50.6m

The signing of White was criticised by many due to the huge transfer fee as he joined from Brighton in 2021.

However, the transfer was viewed as a statement of intent from Arsenal by some, as they paid big money for a player with very high potential.

And the price paid seems worth it now as White has played over 100 games for the Gunners, becoming a crucial member of their defence.

He has also gone on to win four caps with England while at the club and he continues to be considered one of the best right-backs in the Premier League.

    4. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – £55.1m

Aubameyang arrived at Arsenal in 2018 as one of the best strikers in Europe after an impressive spell at Borussia Dortmund

He scored 10 goals in 13 games after joining the Gunners midway through the 17/18 season, instantly showing his goalscoring ability.

The following season, he would score 22 goals in the Premier League while also helping the club win the FA Cup

However, things turned for the worse in 2020 when he fell out with Arteta and was exiled from the Arsenal squad, ultimately leading to his exit.

The striker left the club to join Barcelona on a free transfer before also having a short ill-fated stint back in England with Chelsea.

    3. Kai Havertz – £65m

Havertz joined Arsenal from London rivals Chelsea to become Arteta’s record signing for the club at the time.

The German had struggled at the Blues and many questioned the signing, especially when it cost the Gunners £65million to bring him to the Emirates.

He failed to hit the ground running and didn’t score his first goal until September 30 in a 4-0 win over Bournemouth

However, he then hit his straps and Havertz ended last season with 13 Premier League goals in 37 appearances.

Havertz is starting to show glimpses of why he was worth £65m

    2. Nicolas Pepe – £72m

Out of all the players on this list, Pepe ended up having the worst Arsenal career.

The winger signed for the Gunners from Lille in 2019 for a then club-record fee of £72million.

However, he struggled from the off and failed to perform consistently, scoring just 27 goals in 112 games for the club.

Pepe was sent out on loan to Nice in 2022 and after returning to North London, he and the club were seeking an exit.

No clubs were able to make the signing until this summer when his contract was terminated to allow him to join Trabzonspor for free.

    1. Declan Rice – £105m

After a long saga this summer, Rice joined Arsenal from West Ham for a British record fee of £105m.

The Gunners fought off interest from Manchester City to sign the England international in what was a massive coup for the club.

He is now Arsenal’s most expensive-ever signing and already living up to his price tag.

Rice’s performances in midfield for Arteta’s side have made them look even stronger although they just missed out on the title again..

He will now be aiming to put that right this campaign with the Gunners getting in more reinforcements.

Ben White begins pre-season with trademark antics and Arsenal fans love it

Ben White was up to his old tricks as Arsenal got their pre-season tour underway in the USA.

The Gunners were facing Bournemouth at the Dignity Health Sports Park, which is the home of LA Galaxy.

One moment involving White caught fans attention and showed that even in pre-season, players do take it seriously.

The Arsenal defender was lining up for a corner next to the Bournemouth goalkeeper and got into a wrestling match with Milos Kerkez.

The pair were running rings around the goalkeeper as they jostled for position.

White is known for his use of the dark arts at corners and grabbed headlines for unstrapping Guglielmo Vicario’s glove during a match against Tottenham last season.

Arsenal were the Premier League’s most successful team from set-pieces last term and White was seemingly given the role of ‘chief s***house’ to block off opposition goalkeepers.

It has become an inside-joke among Arsenal fans and they loved White’s antics during the pre-season game.

One said: “I absolutely love him, elite baller and athlete man!”

Another added: “Getting ready for the new season I see.”

A third wrote: “ As always.”

The match itself finished 1-1, with Fabio Vieira and Antoine Semenyo scoring, with Arsenal winning the shootout 5-4.

It was a very young team that Mikel Arteta fielded with Ayden Heaven, Ethan Nwaneri, Salah-Eddine Oulad M’Hand and Myles Lewis-Skelly all handed starts in LA.

“I’m really pleased because we had really special circumstances today,” Arteta said after the match.

“We arrived two days ago, we had so many young kids playing with us that had never played before and I think we had a really strong performance against a side that is a bit ahead of us in their schedule.

“They had a full first-team available , so I’m really proud of them, both the young kids and the senior ones, because they have fulfilled their roles in a really impressive way.

“That was a different level today to the game that we played last Saturday, and it was another big step.

“We looked really connected and as a manager, it was just a joy to see the faces of those kids making their debut, participating, and the excitement showed, and as well to see our senior players put themselves in their shoes and give them the support and be the role models that we want.”

Wright-Phillips reminds fans about controversial Varane and White verdict

Shaun Wright-Phillips has dug up a claim he made about Ben White and Raphael Varane that has aged VERY well.

The former Manchester City and Chelsea winger appeared on talkSPORT in 2021 and was discussing two of that summer’s biggest deals.

Arsenal completed a £50million move to sign White from Brighton, while Man United signed Varane from Real Madrid for a reported £41million.

While 23-year-old White moved to north London off the back of fine seasons for Leeds and Brighton, Man United’s move saw them sign a three-time LaLiga champion and a four-time Champions League winner in a deal that was seen as a major coup.

Discussing the deal at the time, Wright-Phillips left fans stunned with his surprise view.

Asked if White will do better than Varane, Wright-Phillips said: “Yes, I personally do.

“I know it’s a big statement but he’s used to the Premier League and he’s used to defending a lot for Brighton, week in, week out.

“Varane has come in to a whole new league and he’s going to be put under immense pressure.

“At this moment, I’d rather sign Ben White.”

In the clip, even Arsenal favourite Jack Wilshere can be seen looking surprised, but time has proven that he was right, with Wright-Phillips resharing the clip with an embarrassed face emoji three years on.

Since joining Arsenal, White has established himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League, playing predominantly now as a right-back.

The 26-year-old has made 134 appearances for Arsenal and established himself as a core player in Mikel Arteta’s title-chasing side.

Raphael Varane sends a farewell message to the Manchester United supporters as he announces he’ll be leaving the club at the end of the season

Varane’s move to Man United, meanwhile, didn’t work out quite as well. He ended up playing 94 times for a side who have finished sixth, third and eighth in the Premier League before leaving the club this summer.

In an emotional video on the club’s website, Varane said: “It’s been an amazing few years to play for this special club and that shirt.

“I fell in love with the club and the fans. You have to play for Man United to understand what that represents.

“Despite the fact we have had a difficult season, I am very positive for the future. The new owners are coming with a clear plan and a great strategy.”

Wright-Phillips might be coy about his surprisingly correct prediction, but he’s likely to have most fans asking for the lottery picks now…

White ‘wonder goal’ leaves Mikel Arteta lost for words and with hands on head

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta couldn’t believe what he saw after Ben White scored a ‘wonder goal’ against Chelsea.

The Gunners defender scored his second and their fifth of the night to leave the Blues in disarray.

With 70 minutes on the clock, Martin Odegaard sent a neatly chipped ball into the box and onto the run of White.

White then volleyed it first time into the top left corner of the goal, with many initially thinking it took a deflection on its way in.

However replays showed that it didn’t, and Arteta was seen with his hands on his head on the touchline in visible awe.

Speaking on commentary for talkSPORT, former Manchester City defender Danny Mills was also impressed with White’s finish.

“If it’s his goal and he’s side footed that into the top corner, it is an outstanding volley,” he said, before adding: “It’s a wonder goal.”

Arsenal were the dominant side from minute one at the Emirates Stadium and scored their opener in the first five minutes.

It was Leandro Trossard who scored their only goal of the first-half, with the second seeing them certainly step up a gear.

White scored within seven minutes of the restart when capitalising on poor defending from Chelsea.

Former Blue Kai Havertz then scored two goals against his old club to inflict further damage on the visitors.

White’s second of the game was arguably the best of the lot and capped off an excellent performance from Arsenal.

It’s a result that sends them back to the top of the Premier League although City have two games in hand on them.

Defeat for Chelsea comes just days after they were knocked out of the FA Cup semi-finals and leaves their hopes of qualifying for Europe in the balance.

Arsenal dominate but no Man City stars – Mark Goldbridge’s Team of the Season

Manchester City currently top the Premier League but none of their stars make it into Mark Goldbridge’s Team of the Season.

With just a month of top-flight action left to play, clubs and players will be giving their final pushes for their respective goals.

A number of stars have consistently been at the top of their game, others also emerging as surprise packages during what has been a thoroughly enjoyable season.

talkSPORT’s Goldbridge has named his Team of the Season and it’s Arsenal who dominate his selections, with no Manchester City players making the cut despite sitting top.

He said: “I want to do this a little bit differently than maybe a combined Premier League title race XI, because I want to give it to players I think have exceeded expectations and been really, really good.”

Starting with his goalkeeper, he said: “I’m tempted to say [Guglielmo] Vicario in goal actually. Alisson is very obvious but he’s had an injury and he is the best goalkeeper in the world, whereas I think Vicario deserves it.

“Yeah he’s been a bit shaky on crosses but Spurs are fifth in the league, probably going to finish fourth, which is amazing. He’s made some big saves and he came in from nowhere, so Vicario for me.”

At full-back, Goldbridge said: “I would put Ben White at right-back. I think Trent’s [Alexander-Arnold] a better right-back but across the whole season, I think he’s gone unnoticed Ben White by a lot of people, he’s been absolutely incredible.

“I think it [left-back] would have to be, for me, [Destiny] Udogie at Spurs. When I saw him against Chelsea and he got the second yellow, I was like, ‘Here we go, Spurs have bought another undisciplined, inconsistent player.’ But actually he’s been really consistent and he’s been a massive part of Spurs’ success this season.”

“I think because it’s a partnership, I wanted a partnership so I’m going to go Gabriel and [William] Saliba,” he said on his centre-back choices.

Gabriel, Saliba and White form part of a rock solid defence

“Saliba obviously gets a lot of plaudits as a fantastic European world-class sort of centre-back, he’s moving in that area.

“Gabriel, I think if you speak to Arsenal fans, they would say in some ways he’s had a better season. He’s a goal threat, he’s getting the most out of his abilities. I think he deserves to play next to Saliba.”

Mark Goldbridge name his title race combined XI with stars from Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool

When selecting his midfield, Goldbridge said: “I’d start off with Declan Rice as the holding midfielder. Even though I think Rodri is better, I think being bought for £100million and how good Arsenal have been, you’ve got to acknowledge that in a team of the season.

“So Declan Rice would be the sort of no.6, no.8 I would use [Alexis] Mac Allister even though I think he’s suitable a little bit deeper, he can play that role. He’s scored some big goals, I think he’s signing of the season.

“And then I probably would drop no.10, it wouldn’t be [Kevin] De Bruyne because he’s been out for a long time, so it would have to be Foden or Cole Palmer for me for that spot.

“I think Palmer from Man City to Chelsea has been brilliant. In a terrible Chelsea team, he has been unbelievable. At such a young age to come down to London from Man City and to deliver the way that he has consistently, the mentality on young shoulders.”

And for his front three, Goldbridge said: “I think [Bukayo] Saka, [Mohamed] Salah and [Erling] Haaland are the best three in the Premier League as a front three, but do they deserve to be in a team of the season?

“I don’t think they do. So I’m going to go Anthony Gordon off the left, I think he’s had an amazing season for Newcastle and really justified that price tag that I thought was over the top. In a poor Newcastle side, I think his numbers have been fantastic.

“I think Ollie Watkins has to be in there, goals and assists all season for Aston Villa and they’re in a race for Champions League football. He can score and also provide, I think he’s only second to Salah in relation to that so I’ve put Watkins there.

Newcastle's Gordon has emerged as one of the best wingers of the campaign

“And then right-wing is probably the hardest one of the lot because you could make a case for Jarrod Bowen. You could certainly make an outside case for someone like [Alejandro] Garnacho but I still think it has to be Saka in that place.

“I’m just going to put Saka there because people still think he’s not had a good season for Arsenal… He’s had a couple of dips but I still think he’s had a very good season for Arsenal.”

Arsenal therefore have five players in the XI and Spurs make up two of the spots, with the others all coming from Liverpool, Chelsea, Newcastle and Aston Villa.

Selections will be subject to wide debate, but there’s no doubt that Goldbridge’s squad is stacked with talent.

Declan Rice hoping to get Arsenal teammate Ben White to make England U-Turn

Declan Rice has revealed he will try to convince Arsenal teammate Ben White to return to the England fold.

England boss Gareth Southgate revealed earlier this month that Arsenal director Edu had contacted him to tell him that White did not want to be considered for international selection.

It follows his decision to leave the Qatar World Cup in the winter of 2022 for ‘personal reasons’, having not played for England since.

The 26-year-old has starred for Arsenal this season where he is a key player for Mikel Arteta, whose side are topping the Premier League table at the moment.

With his England future looking bleak, White’s teammate Rice has admitted he will do what he can to change his mind.

“When I go back and I’ll speak to him and see,” Rice told talkSPORT at a press conference.

“But hopefully he does change his mind on that because having a player like that – in the squad who’s performing well in the Premier League – it’d be a great addition to the (England) squad.”

White recently signed a new contract with Arsenal and has been praised for his versatility, being able to operate across the defensive back line.

Reports emerged that White and England coach Steve Holland clashed at Qatar which led to the defender leaving the camp.

“The only thing I can say is, it’s Ben’s life. It’s Ben’s decision,” added Rice.

“We can’t argue with him with what he wants to do. Of course, there’s always going to be people writing stuff, having their opinions on what they think.

“But at the end of the day, the only thing that matters is what he thinks and at this moment in time, he obviously doesn’t want to play for England.

Furious Harry Redknapp rips into Ben White for turning down England, labels the decision as disgusting and says Gareth Southgate should ‘slam the door in his mush’

“I really hope he does (change his mind), because I see him every day, he is such a good character. For people that don’t know, such a good character, very composed, very level-headed.

“When he’s on a football pitch, he will do anything to win but also I think for England as well, he can play as a centre-back and at right-back, as in inverted full-back. Now he’s a really key tool that we could have.

“So I hope he changes his mind. Obviously, at this moment in time, he doesn’t feel like he wants that. So that I think is his decision.

“I know him and Gareth spoke internally about it. So I don’t know too much of the ins and outs, but I just hope he changes his mind.

“If you know him as a person and as a player like I do, he’s such a good guy. He’s such a good guy and he’s an unbelievable footballer.

“Playing for England is the greatest honour you could ever have. So hopefully, with the quality that he has and the quality he can bring to this side, we can get him back in.”
