‘Worst team in history of Man Utd’: Amorim’s slams Red Devils; City hit battlers for six: PL Wrap

Manchester United slumped to a 3-1 defeat at home to Brighton as Old Trafford remembered the legendary Denis Law on Sunday, while Tottenham’s troubles also persisted as they lost 3-2 at Everton.

Manchester City roared back into form with a 6-0 thrashing of Ipswich, while Nottingham Forest’s unlikely title challenge goes on after a 3-2 victory over Southampton took Nuno Espirito Santo’s men level with second-placed Arsenal.

    – ‘We are worst team in history of Man Utd’: Amorim –

Ruben Amorim made the astonishing admission that his Manchester United flops are the worst team in the club’s history after Sunday’s dismal 3-1 defeat against Brighton.

United crumbled to a sixth loss in 11 Premier League games since Amorim arrived from Sporting Lisbon to replace the sacked Erik ten Hag.

“We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United,” Amorim said after his side’s wretched display at Old Trafford.

“I know you want headlines but I am saying that because we have to acknowledge that and to change that. Here you go: your headlines.”

Man UTD legend passes away aged 84 | 00:39

Amorim’s side are languishing in 13th place and although they are 10 points above the relegation zone, they are far from certain to avoid being dragged into the survival struggle on the evidence of Sunday’s display.

Yankuba Minteh set the tone for United’s moribund performance with an early opener for Brighton.

Bruno Fernandes equalised with a penalty before half-time, but second-half goals from Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Rutter left United in turmoil.

United have suffered six home league defeats this season, their most from their opening 12 matches of a season since 1893-94.

They have also lost 10 of their 22 league games this season, the earliest into a top-flight campaign that they have hit double figures for defeats since 1989-90.

“Imagine what this is for a fan of Manchester United. Imagine what this is for me. We are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. I have full knowledge of that,” Amorim said.

While United have not been dragged completely into the fight for survival just yet, Amorim must find a way to get results to avoid the pressure on him becoming intolerable.

The 39-year-old arrived at United in November, hailed as one of Europe’s brightest young coaches.

But his preferred 3-4-3 formation is not suited to the players in United’s squad.

Yet, while he admitted he is only thinking of avoiding relegation now, the Portuguese coach refuses to change his philosophy.

“I am not going to change, no matter what. I know we can succeed but we need to survive this moment. I am not naive. We need to survive now,” Amorim said.

United’s latest calamity came on the day the club paid a sombre tribute to Denis Law after their legendary striker passed away aged 84 on Friday.

Postecoglou: ‘Spurs need reinforcements’ | 01:11

    – ‘Everybody is underperforming’ –

Law is immortalised in a statue of United’s ‘Holy Trinity’ alongside Bobby Charlton and George Best outside Old Trafford.

Fans laid scarves and flowers at the statue in tribute to the third highest scorer in United’s history and took part in a minute’s applause for Law prior to kick-off.

What transpired after that would have shocked Law to his core as Amorim’s team once again failed to live up to the storied history of the 20-time English champions.

“In nine games in the Premier League, we won two,” Amorim said. “Everybody here is underperforming, no matter what the circumstances.

“We are underperforming and have to accept that. It’s unacceptable to lose so many games, for any Premier League club, imagine Manchester United.

“So it’s a really hard moment but we have to continue, we have to continue, there is no other way.”

United have lost six of their last seven league games against Brighton in an indication of how far they have fallen since last winning the title in 2013.

Amorim’s side host Rangers in their next game on Thursday in the Europa League, with the manager desperate for a positive result to change the mood.

“I knew it was going to be hard to put a completely new idea in the moment, but when you lose games and don’t win three games in a row it becomes really hard,” Amorim said.

“So that’s why I’m telling we are going to suffer because I will continue to do the same.

“I am just here to help my players, but we need to understand we are breaking all the bad records.”

Haaland signs monster deal with City | 01:21

    – Foden stars as Man City hit Ipswich for six –

Phil Foden struck twice as Manchester City climbed to fourth in the Premier League with a 6-0 rout of struggling Ipswich on Sunday.

Foden netted either side of Mateo Kovacic’s eye-catching goal as City blew Ipswich away with three first-half goals at Portman Road.

Jeremy Doku, Erling Haaland and James McAtee netted after the interval as City enjoyed their biggest league win this season.

Pep Guardiola’s side have won three of their last four league games as they begin the long climb back to respectability after a dismal start to the season.

Sterner tests lie in wait for City, including a vital Champions League trip to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday and looming Premier League clashes with Chelsea and Arsenal.

But this was the kind of confident display City used to make look routine during their march to four successive English titles.

Winning is almost certain to prove beyond them as they trail leaders Liverpool by 12 points.

Guardiola will settle for restoring City’s pride this term as he rebuilds a team that suddenly grew old and inconsistent before his eyes.

Haaland, who has scored 112 goals in just 127 appearances for City, this week committed himself to the club until 2034 when he signed a new nine-and-a-half year deal.

But Kyle Walker was again absent from the City side amid reports that AC Milan are ready to bid for the unsettled England right-back.

In City’s first visit to Portman Road for 23 years, the champions emphasised how powerful they can still be at peak form.

    – Ruthless City –

Haaland scored a hat-trick when City beat Ipswich 4-1 in August and he threatened to net in the opening moments in Suffolk.

Kovacic’s pass split the Ipswich defence and sent Haaland clean through on goal, but the Norway striker’s shot was pushed away by Christian Walton.

Kovacic fired wastefully over after a flowing move carved open the Ipswich rearguard again.

Omari Hutchinson almost put Ipswich ahead against the run of play with a stinging strike from just inside the area that hit Haaland and flashed just over.

But City’s pressure was rewarded in the 27th minute when Doku and Kevin De Bruyne combined to set up Foden for a clinical close-range finish.

Foden turned provider as ruthless City doubled their lead three minutes later. Kovacic strode onto Foden’s pass on the edge of the area and smashed a superb low strike past the flat-footed Walton for his first goal since October.

Guardiola’s men were rampant and they struck again three minutes before half-time.

Set free by Doku, De Bruyne raced into the area and cut the ball back for Foden, whose shot from five yards evaded Walton’s weak attempted save.

The England forward’s fifth goal in his last four games maintained his recent improvement.

City have scored 25 first-half goals in 22 games, more than any other team in the Premier League this season.

Ipswich were powerless to stem the tide. Doku danced through their defence to score City’s fourth with a low shot that hit Dara O’Shea on its way past Walton in the 49th minute.

City showed no mercy and Haaland joined the party in the 57th minute. Jack Clarke conceded possession and Doku teed up Haaland to drill past Walton for his 22nd goal in all competitions this season.

McAtee came off the bench to bag City’s sixth in the 69th minute, the 22-year-old looping a header over Walton from Kovacic’s cross.

Forest were equally rampant in the first 45 minutes to cut the gap on leaders Liverpool to six points and consolidate their lead in the race for a place in the Champions League next season.

Elliot Anderson, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Chris Wood netted before the break. Southampton salvaged some pride in the second period through Jan Bednarek and Paul Onuachu but they remain on course for an immediate return to the Championship, 10 points adrift of safety.

City crush Utd in brutal derby beat down; shock surge hits fresh heights: PL Wrap

Manchester City underlined the vast gulf in quality between themselves and Manchester United on Sunday as Liverpool showed their support for absent teammate Luis Diaz, whose parents were kidnapped in Colombia.

Old Trafford paid tribute to late United great Bobby Charlton ahead of kick-off, with supporters unfurling a banner that read: “The finest English footballer the world has ever seen”.

But memories of past glories failed to translate onto the pitch, with the home team thoroughly outplayed by the champions, who did not have to get out of second gear in their 3-0 win.

It was the first spot-kick Manchester City have ever been awarded at Old Trafford in the Premier League in the 27th meeting between the teams.

Erling Haaland stepped up to tuck home from the spot, his 12th goal of the season in all competitions.

City goalkeeper Ederson saved a Scott McTominay pile-driver before Andre Onana produced heroics at the other end when Haaland appeared certain to head home.

But the Norwegian forward made no mistake just after the break, thumping home a header from Bernardo Silva’s cross.

Phil Foden made it 3-0 with 10 minutes remaining after he was set up by Haaland.

“It was a footballing lesson. Manchester United didn’t know what to do,” Micah Richards said on Sky Sports.

“The first half was a contest,” Manchester United legend Gary Neville said. “The second half wasn’t a contest. It became a shambles. United went missing in the second half.”

The result continues to put the pressure on United manager Erik Ten Hag after just five wins and five losses this year.

    – EMOTIONAL LIVERPOOL TRIBUTE –

Earlier, Liverpool swept Nottingham Forest aside by the same scoreline. Goals from Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez before the break and Mohamed Salah’s second-half effort ensured Jurgen Klopp’s side maintain their 100 per cent home record in the Premier League this season.

Jota held aloft Diaz’s number seven shirt after scoring — the Colombian did not feature in Liverpool’s squad following the kidnapping incident in his home country.

Colombia President Gustavo Petro said on Saturday that the winger’s mother had been rescued but the search remained ongoing for his father.

“Luis was with us in the hotel then he went home,” Jota told the BBC. “It’s a very hard situation and I don’t know how anyone would react if it happened to you.

“He was going to play. I played instead of him, and I showed him his shirt to show we’re with him and we hope everything works out.”

Liverpool finished the day fourth in the table, behind leaders Tottenham, Arsenal and City.

VILLA CONTINUE SURGE AS BRIGHTON SLIP UP

High-flying Aston Villa, in fifth spot, won their 12th consecutive home game in the Premier League, beating struggling Luton 3-1.

Unai Emery’s side made light work of their opponents, with goals from John McGinn and Moussa Diaby giving them the upper hand before Luton captain Tom Lockyer put through his own net.

“For me it is still a long process here and I will want to work to improve as always,” Emery told Sky Sports.

“Of course I am happy but still being serious, serious in the way I want to build here and improve more.”

Brighton lost further ground after their sparkling start to the season. The south coast club took a 1-0 lead through Evan Ferguson, but Fulham levelled through midfielder Joao Palhinha.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored the only goal of the game as Everton beat West Ham 1-0 to give themselves breathing space above the relegation zone.

Man Utd ‘erupts’ as PL’s ‘most hated player’ saves the day; huge Arsenal scare: CL wrap

Andre Onana and Harry Maguire were the unlikely heroes as Manchester United kickstarted their Champions League campaign by beating FC Copenhagen 1-0 on the night Bobby Charlton was remembered at Old Trafford.

Much-maligned centre-back Maguire headed in the only goal 18 minutes from time before Onana saved Jordan Larsson’s penalty with the last kick of the game.

The English giants had lost their opening two Champions League group games for the first time in the club’s history, but are back in contention for the last 16 thanks to a much-needed win.

One of United’s greatest ever players, Charlton died on Saturday at the age of 86.

A moving tribute was paid to the 1966 World Cup winner before kick-off as United boss Erik ten Hag laid a wreath in the centre-circle before a minute’s silence was observed.

Ten Hag urged his players to be inspired by Charlton’s legacy after a difficult start to the season.

But the Dutchman would have been disheartened by another insipid first-half performance.

The Danish champions were inches away from going in front after just five minutes.

Maguire was caught in possession by Mohamed Elyounoussi and the former Southampton forward’s cross was turned onto the post by Diogo Goncalves.

The emotional atmosphere around Old Trafford prior to kick-off quickly turned to groans of frustration at the home side laboured to create anything of note before the break.

Ten Hag responded by introducing Danish international Christian Eriksen against his countrymen.

However, it was not until two more big chances for Copenhagen to take a shock lead that United awoke from their slumber.

    – Onana proves his worth –

Onana made high-profile errors in both United’s Champions League defeats to Bayern Munich and Galatasaray.

But the man who helped Inter Milan reach the final of last season’s competition showed why United splashed out £47 million on him in July.

Onana’a first crucial save of the game prevented Lukas Lerager’s shot finding the top corner.

Moments later Elias Achouri blasted a volley over when unmarked at the far post. Rasmus Hojlund is Eriksen’s heir as the great hope of the Danish international side, but he failed to shine against his former club.

Hojlund’s most telling contribution came in teeing up Eriksen for a powerful low drive that former Liverpool goalkeeper Kamil Grabara did brilliantly to turn behind.

Marcus Rashford’s loss of form has contributed hugely to United’s struggles so far this season.

The England international, who scored 30 goals last season, has still netted only once this campaign and wasted a glorious chance to open the scoring with a heavy touch when one-on-one with Grabara.

Substitute Alejandro Garnacho then did exactly the same with just Grabara to beat.

Instead centre-back Maguire bailed out his forwards to at least ensure Charlton’s farewell was marked with a victory.

The England international had fallen way down the pecking order during Ten Hag’s first season in charge, but is making the most of a series of defensive injuries that have brought him back into the fold.

Maguire just stayed onside to meet Eriksen’s cross with a bullet header 18 minutes from time.

United should have added a second as Garnacho and Scott McTominay passed up big chances to double the lead.

And they were nearly made to pay when McTominay was penalised for a high foot on Elyounoussi deep into stoppage time.

Larsson, son of former United striker Henrik Larsson, stepped forward but his powerful effort was turned behind by Onana to spark wild scenes of celebration.

Victory takes United above Copenhagen into third in Group A and within one point of Galatasaray.

Bayern are already closing in on qualification after a 3-1 win over Galatasaray made it three wins from three games for the German giants.

CLASSY JESUS STEERS ARSENAL TO WIN OVER SEVILLA

Gabriel Jesus scored a sublime goal and created another to earn Arsenal an important 2-1 Champions League win over Sevilla on Tuesday, making up for their shock defeat at Lens earlier in October.

The Brazilian striker crafted Gabriel Martinelli’s opener with a masterful turn and pass and then doubled the Gunners’ lead with a lethal finish, as Mikel Arteta’s side moved top of Group B.

Arsenal moved up to six points, one ahead of Lens, with the French side drawing 1-1 at home against PSV Eindhoven, who are level on two points with Sevilla.

Diego Alonso’s team put up a spirited showing in the Uruguayan’s second match in charge, following their impressive and intense performance in a draw against La Liga leaders Real Madrid on Saturday.

However, Arsenal had more cutting edge in attack and Jesus’ quality made the difference in an entertaining clash in Andalusia — he has scored in each of his team’s matches in the competition.

Sevilla boasted before kick-off with banners hailing their record seven Europa League triumphs, but in the heart of their defence they also have a four-time Champions League winner in Sergio Ramos.

The 37-year-old martialled the defence well as the hosts kept Arteta’s side at bay for the majority of the first half, which was bookended by Martinelli chances.

Sevilla goalkeeper Orjan Nyland saved the first, darting off his line quickly to deflect Martinelli’s shot back off the striker and out for a goal kick.

The hosts took control in driving rain at the rowdy Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium, with Lucas Ocampos flicking wide and Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya looking uncertain under pressure, giving the ball away on multiple occasions.

Arteta defended the Spain international after he made two mistakes in Saturday’s Premier League draw at Chelsea, with some fans demanding to see Aaron Ramsdale restored in goal, but the coach stuck with his compatriot.

Sevilla carved out their best chance of the first period moments before Arsenal took the lead, with Youssef En-Nesyri dragging an effort narrowly wide after breaking into the area.

After another Sevilla attack was cut short in stoppage time, Gabriel Jesus turned brilliantly in midfield to confound two Sevilla players and open up the pitch, before springing Martinelli through on goal with a quick pass.

The Brazilian showed composure to round Nyland and slot home on his Champions League debut with Ramos unable to catch him in pursuit.

Carpenter unfazed by online critics | 01:54

    – Jesus decisive –

Arsenal last qualified for the tournament in 2017 and Arteta’s young side’s inexperience told in their defeat by Lens after having taken the lead, however this time they quickly found a second goal.

The otherwise quiet Martin Odegaard lashed over the bar early in the second half before Jesus dribbled into the box from the left flank and brilliantly thrashed a shot into the far top corner across Nyland.

Sevilla pulled one back just before the hour mark when Nemanja Gudelj headed home from Ivan Rakitic’s corner past the motionless Raya.

The Arsenal goalkeeper produced a spectacular save to tip Mariano Diaz’s effort on to the crossbar, although it would have been ruled out for a foul had it found a way in.

Sevilla beat Manchester United and Juventus last season at home in their Europa League run and refused to give in without trying everything, with former Tottenham winger Erik Lamela booked for diving in the area.

They turned the screw in the final stages, but Arsenal clung on for victory.

THREE IN THREE FOR BELLINGHAM AS REAL MADRID WIN IN BRAGA

Jude Bellingham scored his third goal in as many Champions League appearances for Real Madrid as the Spanish side won 2-1 away to Braga in Portugal on Tuesday.

Rodrygo put Real ahead and England star Bellingham made it 2-0 just after the hour mark, with Carlo Ancelotti’s side then holding on after Alvaro Djalo pulled one back for Braga.

The result leaves Madrid in a strong position with the maximum nine points from three games in Group C, three ahead of Napoli who beat Union Berlin 1-0 away in Germany.

After a cagey start, Nacho released Vinicius down the left flank and the Brazilian stood Serdar Saatci up before squaring for a sliding Rodrygo to give Madrid the lead on 16 minutes.

Madrid briefly thought they had doubled their lead 10 minutes before half-time when Rodrygo slotted the ball into an empty net, but Vinicius had strayed offside as Eduardo Camavinga played him in near the halfway line.

Jude Bellingham can’t be stopped for Real Madrid.Source: Getty Images

Bellingham doubled Madrid’s lead on 61 minutes when he stroked the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box after being teed up by Vinicius.

It was his 11th goal in all competitions for Real since joining the record 14-time European champions from Borussia Dortmund ahead of this season.

However, the home side halved the deficit just two minutes later when Djalo powered a near-post drive past Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Braga then introduced the dangerous Bruma, who was only deemed fit enough to start on the bench. The change nearly paid off on 70 minutes when a Ricardo Horta drive was spooned just wide by Arrizabalaga.

Vinicius thought he had added a goal to his two assists on 82 minutes, but the assistant’s flag denied him with Madrid looking to kill off the game.

A VAR check for a penalty in the 89th minute was Braga’s last hope for an equaliser as Madrid ground out a hard-fought victory.

The Spanish side will be looking to book their place in the round of 16 when they host Braga in the return fixture on November 8.

Given the nod to start up front, Brazilian attacker Rodrygo will be hoping his goal will ensure his place in the starting XI for Saturday’s Clasico away to Barcelona.

PL champs’ $192m elephant in the room; Blues star’s ‘symbolic’ resurgence: Talking Pts

Although Manchester City snapped their losing streak, a Belgian star might have given Pep Guardiola a £100m headache that doesn’t look like being solved any time soon.

Elsewhere, a maligned Chelsea recruit’s resurgence has helped the Blues finally kick into gear while a dark horse might not be flying under the radar any more.

BELGIAN RECRUIT LEAVES CITY WITH £100M HEADACHE

Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi put 37-year-old James Milner out of his misery at halftime at the Etihad after being torn apart for 45 minutes by the speed and skill of City’s Jeremy Doku.

The Belgian set up Julian Alvarez’s opening goal in a 2-1 win as the champions recovered from losing back-to-back league games for the first time since 2018.

Doku’s dazzling start to life at City since a £55 million ($AUD105m) move from Rennes in August has left one of the stars of last season’s treble triumph in the shade.

Jack Grealish was again left on the bench by Pep Guardiola and has his work cut out to regain his starting place ahead of Doku on the left of City’s attack.

Grealish, who moved to the Etihad from Aston Villa in 2021 for a staggering £100m ($AUD192m), struggled to live up to the lofty price tag in his first season at the club.

However, the winger kicked into gear in his second season having adapted to Guardiola’s notoriously detailed way of playing as he scored five goals and bagged seven assists in the league.

But now, it seems the fleet-footed 28-year-old is back where he began.

Grealish started in City’s second and third league games before a small hamstring issue sidelined him for two weeks.

He has since failed to start in City’s last four games, coming on in the 87th, 80th and 75th minute against Nottingham Forest, Wolves and Brighton respectively while he remained on the bench for the entire Arsenal game.

Instead, Guardiola has deployed Doku and Phil Foden at left wing in place of Grealish.

It is a long season and the English star will no doubt prove to be a pivotal figure as the campaign wears on, but the early signs are not promising.

ABSURD STATS BEHIND DARK HORSE’S RESURGENCE

Only Manchester City have won more than the 62 Premier League points amassed in 2023 by a transformed Villa under Unai Emery.

Most of that haul has come at home with Villa Park restored to being a fortress.

Victory over West Ham was an 11th consecutive home league win for Emery’s men, who have their sights set on reaching the Champions League for the first time.

Additionally, Emery’s troops have scored 17 goals in their four home league games against Everton, Crystal Palace, Brighton and West Ham.

In fact, they have scored three or more goals in the first four games, a feat they have not achieved in 102 years.

“For me to play at home is always something special,” said Emery.

Aston Villa hammer West Ham | 00:56

“We have to believe and always connect with the fans.”

The form of Douglas Luiz and Ollie Watkins encapsulates Villa’s revival. Luiz became the first Villa to score in six consecutive home league games after netting twice against West Ham.

Only Erling Haaland and Salah have more Premier League goals and assists than Watkins since Emery took charge a year ago.

With the win against West Ham, Villa sit just two points off top spot in the league and have scored the second-most goals in the competition.

It might be time for the football world to truly understand what Emery has cooking at Villa Park.

261-DAY DROUGHT FLIPPED ON ITS HEAD AS BLUES FIND FORM

It took Chelsea’s $167 million man Mykhailo Mudryk 261 days to score his first Chelsea goal.

Now, he has two in three games.

The Ukrainian winger attempted a cross against Arsenal but it looped over David Raya who was caught out of position to give Chelsea a 2-0 lead over the Gunners.

Granted, Mauricio Pochettino’s side blew their two-goal advantage as Arsenal managed to snatch a draw.

But the fact Mudryk got on the scoresheet along with Chelsea getting a result against a title contender in Arsenal having struggled earlier in the season is most certainly cause for optimism.

“The 22-year-old’s personal story seems linked with the new era at Chelsea,” Sky Sports’ Peter Smith wrote.

Mudryk has two goals in three games. (Photo by JUSTIN TALLIS / AFP)Source: AFP

“The hasty, expensive deal to snatch him out of Arsenal’s grasp reflective of the club’s seemingly chaotic transfer policy; the struggles to reproduce the form he’d shown previously and the subsequent drop in confidence … and now the rejuvenation under Mauricio Pochettino.

“It is symbolic his long-awaited first goal for the club came in the win at Fulham which seems to have kickstarted Chelsea’s season.

“Mudryk could be the driving force to Chelsea’s improvement.

“He and the team may have been denied that winning feeling in the end on Saturday but both look set for more positive months ahead.”

Pochettino will have to hope Mudryk continues his form as Chelsea have a daunting run of Premier League fixtures ahead of them.

BASEMENT DWELLERS’ BOLD CALL BLOWS UP IN THEIR FACE

Gary O’Neil savoured revenge on his return to Bournemouth as Wolves came from behind to win 2-1 and extend the Cherries’ wait to taste victory under Andoni Iraola.

O’Neil was surprisingly sacked in June despite comfortably leading Bournemouth to survival last season against the odds.

The club’s owner, American Bill Foley, admitted he didn’t “feel good” about making the decision but that the chance to hire Iraola was too good to turn down.

The Spaniard had earned a reputation as one of the continent’s most promising young coaches for the job he did at Rayo Vallecano despite meagre resources.

By contrast, Bournemouth splashed out over £100 million in the transfer window but are yet to see any return on that investment with just three points and no wins from nine games.

Next weekend’s clash against Burnley could prove Iraola’s last roll of the dice with City and Newcastle to follow before the next international break.

Villa knocking on door of PL’s elite after disposing Hammers in four-goal thrashing

Unai Emery urged Aston Villa to chase their dreams this season after thrashing West Ham 4-1 on Monday (AEDT) to close within two points of the top of the Premier League.

Douglas Luiz scored twice, while Ollie Watkins and Leon Bailey were also on target as Villa recorded an 11th consecutive home Premier League win.

Villa have been transformed in just over a year since Emery took charge, with only Manchester City and Arsenal having won more Premier League points in 2023.

Victory takes Villa up to fifth in the table, but within striking distance of leaders City.

Captain John McGinn has spoken of harbouring ambitions to qualify for the Champions League and Emery is focused on at least securing European football for a second consecutive season.

“One of our dreams is to be with the top seven teams and to do something in Europe,” said Emery, whose side are in the Europa Conference League this season.

“To get European football is very important and that is the work we need to try to do. We need to be consistent in what we are doing.”

Luiz is just one of a number of players that are performing at a different level under the Spaniard and continued his scoring streak at Villa Park.

The Brazilian became the first Villa player to score in six consecutive home Premier League games when his strike from the edge of the box had too much power for Alphonse Areola in the West Ham goal on 30 minutes.

Luiz then took the chance to double his side’s advantage from the penalty spot early in the second period after Edson Alvarez tripped Ezri Konsa.

Jarrod Bowen reduced West Ham’s arrears just five minutes later when his shot spun off Pau Torres into the far corner for his 100th career goal.

However, any hope of a Hammers’ fightback was snuffed out by the in-form Watkins on an afternoon that proved a reality check for David Moyes’ men.

“I see the players every day and know the levels. We need to play really well to keep it up with the top six teams,” said Moyes.

“The players are good players but as you can see, if this is the level we need to reach, then we need to improve greatly.”

Fresh from scoring the winner against Australia for England in a rare run out at international level as Harry Kane’s understudy, Watkins blasted in his eighth goal of the season from a narrow angle.

Bailey then exemplified the impressive attacking arsenal that Villa have amassed in recent transfer windows.

The Jamaican was left on the bench as Nicolo Zaniolo started despite being the subject of an investigation from Italian prosecutors over a betting scandal.

But Bailey made the most of his 15 minutes on the field as he cut inside Nayef Aguerd with a stepover and fired into the top corner.

‘England’s greatest ever’: Tributes flow as legends mourn death of football icon Bobby Charlton

England World Cup winner and Manchester United great Bobby Charlton, described by the club as a “giant of the game”, has died at the age of 86, it was announced on Sunday morning.

Charlton passed away after a battle with dementia just a week after celebrating his birthday.

Charlton was a key member of England’s victorious 1966 World Cup team and also enjoyed great success at club level with United, who became the first English club to win the European Cup in 1968, a decade after members of the team were killed in an air crash in Munich.

England World Cup winner Geoff Hurst and former Manchester United star David Beckham led the tributes after the news broke.

Hurst, who scored a hat-trick in the 1966 final for England against West Germany with Charlton in the team, described him as “a great colleague and friend”.

“Very sad news today, (one) of the true Greats Sir Bobby Charlton has passed away,” Hurst wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

“We will never forget him & nor will all of football.

“A great colleague & friend he will be sorely missed by all of the country beyond sport alone.” Beckham said Charlton had a huge influence on his career — and his Manchester United-loving father had named him after him.

“It all began with Sir Bobby. Sir Bobby was the reason I had the opportunity to play for Manchester United,” Beckham posted on Instagram.

“I will be forever grateful to a man I was named after, someone I looked up to and was a hero to many around the world not just in Manchester and our country where he won the World Cup in 1966.

“A true gentleman, family man and truly a national hero… Today isn’t just a sad day for Manchester United & England it’s a sad day for football and everything that Sir Bobby represented.”

Former England forward Gary Lineker described Charlton as “England’s greatest ever player”.

“Deeply saddened to hear that Sir Bobby Charlton has died,” Lineker said on X. “A truly wonderful footballer and genuinely lovely man. A World Cup winner, (Manchester United) great and, for me, England’s greatest ever player.

“He may no longer be with us but he’ll have footballing immortality. RIP Sir Bobby.” Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville said Charlton was the club’s “greatest ambassador”.

“So sorry to hear the news of Sir Bobby Charlton,” the broadcaster and former England right-back said.

“The Greatest English Football player and Manchester United’s greatest ambassador.

“A champion on and off the pitch and a Busby Babe that paved the way for all to come at United.

“Rest In Peace Sir Bobby.” For former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, Charlton was a “true gentleman” and “Mr Manchester United” — and recalled words he had exchanged with him when United won the European Cup for the third time in 2008.

“Icon, Legend, Great! these words are thrown around by all of us to many who 100% don’t deserve them, especially when you compare them to man of Sir Bobby’s calibre,” Ferdinand said on X.

“What a true gentleman of not many words, but when he spoke you stood still, stopped what you were doing and listened.

“A lot of the history was living and breathing through him and he was a constant at the club while I was there — travelling with us all over the world.

“Win, lose or draw he would be in the changing room wishing us well. “The words he shared with me at the bottom of those stairs in Moscow, before I went up to lift the CL trophy will stay with me forever.

“It was a privilege for me to even get that moment with him at that specific time. Thank you Sir Bobby. Mr Manchester United.” United great Eric Cantona posted on Instagram: “Rest in Peace dear Sir Bobby Charlton. One of the best of all time.” Current Manchester United midfielder Casemiro posted on X: “European Cup winner, World Cup winner, Ballon d’Or winner and one of the greatest Manchester United players of all time.

“Lifting the European Cup of 1968 with Red Devils was an absolute milestone for the legendary history of our club.

“Rest In Peace Sir Bobby Charlton.” British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Charlton “has a place in history as one of the game’s greatest players and was hugely loved. Rest in peace Sir Bobby.”

PL great slams ‘very harsh’ call against Gunners amid four red cards in fiery clashes: Wrap

Arsenal staged a stunning fightback from two goals down as Leandro Trossard’s late equaliser rescued a dramatic 2-2 draw at Chelsea on Sunday (AEDT).

Mikel Arteta’s team were 13 minutes away from their first Premier League defeat this season after Cole Palmer’s early penalty and Mykhailo Mudryk’s second-half goal put Chelsea in control.

But a miscued pass from Chelsea keeper Robert Sanchez allowed Declan Rice to give Arsenal a lifeline and Trossard bundled home the leveller with six minutes left.

Arsenal’s gritty comeback extended their unbeaten start to the league season to nine games, leaving them in second place behind leaders Manchester City on goal difference.

It was another display of the character and spirit pulsing through Arsenal over the last 18 months, qualities that are underpinning their bid to finally win the club’s first title since 2004.

For Chelsea, it was a hammer blow after they were on the brink of delivering the first significant statement victory of Mauricio Pochettino’s maiden season in charge.

The Blues have failed to beat Arsenal on home turf since 2018 and they will never get a better chance to inflict defeat on their London rivals.

Following a minute’s silence to mark the death of former Manchester United and England star Bobby Charlton earlier on Saturday, Chelsea had made a vibrant start in the torrential rain.

The Blues took the lead in the 15th minute after William Saliba’s outstretched arm blocked Mudryk’s header.

Chelsea’s penalty appeal initially looked set to be ignored, but referee Chris Kavanagh eventually awarded it after being advised by VAR to consult the pitchside monitor.

However, English football great John Terry was left baffled as to why the handball was awarded.

“Delighted we got the penalty but I don’t agree with the rules on this, very harsh on defenders,” Terry wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“I would have been fuming if that was given against me back in the day. But happy now.”

Dressing room ultimatum rocks Man Utd as boiling point looms for embattled boss

Palmer calmly drilled the spot-kick past David Raya to claim his second goal since signing from Manchester City earlier this season.

Rice led the Arsenal response as the midfielder fired narrowly wide of the far post from an acute angle.

Palmer was inches away from scoring again with a low drive that fizzed wide from the edge of the area.

Pochettino told Arteta not to go into coaching when the pair played together at Paris Saint-Germain, advice the Arsenal boss will be pleased he ignored.

The pair, who this week described their relationship as “like brothers” shared a warm embrace before kick-off, but there was little love lost between their teams.

Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka was singled out for some crude challenges by Marc Cucurella, while three players were booked in a feisty half.

Raya gifted Chelsea their second goal in the 48th minute when the Arsenal keeper failed to follow the flight of Mudryk’s miscued cross from the left flank as it drifted over his head into the far corner.

Mudryk’s fortuitous strike was also a painful twist for Arsenal after he spurned them to sign for Chelsea last season.

Raya has been preferred to Arsenal’s former first choice keeper Aaron Ramsdale in recent weeks, but has looked far from comfortable at times.

Raya’s confidence was shaken by his latest mistake and he almost handed Chelsea another goal with a wayward pass that Palmer intercepted but was unable to convert from 12 yards.

It was a crucial miss as Sanchez returned the favour in the 77th minute with a woeful pass that was seized on by Rice, who gratefully lofted his shot into the empty net from 25 yards.

Suddenly, Chelsea looked riddled with nerves and Arteta’s side made them pay in the 84th minute.

Saka curled a cross to the far post and Trossard got in front of Malo Gusto to slot home from close range.

Eddie Nketiah should have capped Arsenal’s remarkable late surge, but the striker fired wide from a golden chance to steal all three points.

Manchester City beat Brighton 2-1 on Saturday to return to the Premier League summit and end Liverpool’s brief stay at the top after their victory in the Merseyside derby.

Mohamed Salah scored twice as Jurgen Klopp’s men beat 10-man Everton 2-0 in the early kick-off at Anfield, extending their dominance over their struggling neighbours.

But champions City put their recent wobble behind them as they saw off high-flying Brighton thanks to goals from Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland.

Arsenal can become the fourth team to top the table on Saturday if they beat Chelsea in the early evening kick-off.

Liverpool had fortune on their side at home.

Everton’s Ashley Young was sent off before halftime for two bookable offences, while Ibrahima Konate escaped a second booking in the second half with the game still goalless.

Liverpool struggled to make their man advantage count, but finally achieved the breakthrough 15 minutes from time when Salah smashed home from the penalty spot after Michael Keane handled.

Salah was then teed up by Darwin Nunez to make the points safe deep into stoppage time.

Everton manager Sean Dyche was angry about the decision not to send Konate off. “I have no clue how he didn’t feel it was a bookable offence,” he said.

“I like to think there are a lot of fair-minded people here today who are stunned that wasn’t a second yellow card.”

Even Klopp said he could understand Everton’s frustration at a lack of consistency from referee Craig Pawson.

But the three points mean the Reds have lost just one of their last 29 Merseyside derbies and remain unbeaten at Anfield in front of a crowd against Everton since 1999.

City, who had lost their previous two league games, dominated the first half of their match at the Etihad against Brighton, taking the lead through Alvarez in the seventh minute.

Jeremy Doku was the creator as he reached the byline and pulled back for Alvarez to tuck home his seventh of the season from 12 yards.

Haaland ended his brief goal drought by doubling City’s lead 12 minutes later, driving home a fierce left-footed shot from just outside the area.

But it was a different story after the break and Brighton pulled a goal back in the 73rd minute.

Moments after Alvarez failed with an attempt to catch Jason Steele off his line, the ball was quickly sent upfield and, after Kaoru Mitoma’s attempted pass was blocked, Ansu Fati tucked home.

City defender Manuel Akanji was sent off in the closing minutes but they held on to win despite late pressure.

Newcastle, whose early-season struggles are now a distant memory, romped to a 4-0 win against sorry Crystal Palace, with goals from Jacob Murphy, Anthony Gordon, Sean Longstaff and Callum Wilson.

The win, their fourth in five Premier League matches, lifts Eddie Howe’s men to fifth in the Premier League.

Elsewhere, Brentford beat Burnley 3-0 while Wolves came from behind to beat Bournemouth 2-1 thanks to a late winner from Sasa Kalajdzic.

Luton recovered from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 against Nottingham Forest, while Manchester United overcame Sheffield United 2-1 at Bramall Lane.

FIFA backflips on Sydney stadium statue cover-up amid outrage from legends’ families

FIFA has been forced to backflip after outrage over its move to protect its sponsors from the families of Australian sporting legends, The Daily Telegraph reports.

Football’s governing body ordered the plaques on the statues outside Allianz Stadium in Sydney to be covered up under its “clean stadium policy” to protect the global sponsors.

While there was no issue per se with the plaques themselves, most of the statues have some form of commercial sponsorship or involvement reflected on the plaques.

Some of the statues affected by the cover-up included those of footballing legend Johnny Warren (for whom the award for best men’s domestic player is named) and pioneering sprinter Betty Cuthbert.

Warren’s daughter Shannon said she was “dumbfounded” by the covering up of her father’s statue.

“I just cannot understand the reasoning behind it,” Warren said.

“Why would you try and cover up a sporting great in the country where the Women’s World Cup is being held?

“Frankly, this is beyond stupid but it is not the first thing that FIFA has done that is really dumb.”

Warren holds a special status as a giant of the game and a pioneer of football in Australia, and his nephew Jamie compared him to international greats of the sport.

“It is ridiculous. They are not covering the names of sponsors but of sporting greats,” Warren said.

“By the same token would they cover up the plaques of Pele in Brazil or Bobby Charlton in London?

“It is disrespectful to the host nation and its supporters who are coming to watch the games.”

After the covering was reported on, FIFA officials ordered that they be removed, only for plaques to be seen with glue residue and damage on the plaques.

FIFA Chief Women’s Football Officer Sarai Bareman declined to comment, while a FIFA spokesman said while rebranding of stadiums was part of the “clean site concept”, the plaques should not have been covered.

“FIFA has today reconfirmed with all venues that the names on any statues or plaques at FIFA Women’s World Cup sites should not be covered,” the spokesman said.

Despite this, a Venues NSW spokesman said that FIFA had gone ahead with covering the plaques despite being advised against it.

“The plaques were covered at the direction of FIFA,” the Venues NSW spokesman said.

“FIFA were advised against covering the names and it is pleasing they have changed their position.”
